1 Britheren and fadris, here ye what resoun Y yelde now to you.
1 — Meus senhores, irmãos e pais, escutem o que eu vou dizer a vocês em minha defesa!
2 And whanne sum herden that in Ebrew tunge he spak to hem, thei yauen the more silence.
2 Quando o ouviram falar em hebraico , eles ficaram mais quietos ainda. Então Paulo disse:
3 And he seide, Y am a man a Jew, borun at Tharse of Cilicie, nurischid and in this citee bisidis the feet of Gamaliel, tauyt bi the treuthe of fadris lawe, a louyere of the lawe, as also ye alle ben to dai.
3 — Eu sou judeu, nascido em Tarso, na região da Cilícia, mas fui criado aqui em Jerusalém como aluno de Gamaliel. Fui educado muito rigorosamente dentro da lei dos nossos antepassados. Eu era muito dedicado a Deus, como todos vocês aqui também são.
4 And Y pursuede this weie til to the deth, byndynge and bitakinge `in to holdis men and wymmen,
4 Persegui os que seguiam este Caminho e fiz com que alguns fossem condenados à morte. Prendi homens e mulheres e os joguei na cadeia.
5 as the prince of prestis yeldith witnessyng to me, and alle the grettest in birth. Of whom also Y took pistlis to britheren, and wente to Damask, to bring fro thennys men boundun in to Jerusalem, that thei schulden be peyned.
5 O Grande Sacerdote e todo o Conselho Superior podem provar que estou dizendo a verdade, pois eu recebi cartas deles, escritas para os irmãos judeus que moram em Damasco. E fui até lá para prender os seguidores deste Caminho e trazê-los presos com correntes a Jerusalém, a fim de serem castigados.
6 And it was don, while Y yede, and neiyede to Damask, at myddai sudeynli fro heuene a greet plente of liyt schoon aboute me.
6 E Paulo continuou: — Eu estava viajando, já perto de Damasco, e era mais ou menos meio-dia. De repente, uma forte luz que vinha do céu brilhou em volta de mim.
7 And Y felde doun to the erthe, and herde a voice fro heuene, seiynge to me, Saul, Saul, what pursuest thou me? It is hard to thee to kike ayens the pricke.
7 Eu caí no chão e ouvi uma voz que me dizia: “Saulo, Saulo, por que você me persegue?”
8 And Y answeride, Who art thou, Lord? And he seide to me, Y am Jhesu of Nazareth, whom thou pursuest.
8 — Então eu perguntei: “Quem é o senhor?”
9 And thei that weren with me sien but the liyt, but thei herden not the vois of hym, that spak with me.
9 — Os homens que viajavam comigo viram a luz, porém não ouviram a voz de quem falava comigo.
10 And Y seide, Lord, what schal Y do? And the Lord seide to me, Rise thou, and go to Damask; and there it schal be seid to thee, of alle thingis which it bihoueth thee to do.
10 Eu perguntei: “Senhor, o que devo fazer?” — E o Senhor respondeu:
11 And whanne Y saye not, for the clerete of that liyt, Y was led bi the hond of felowis, and Y cam to Damask.
11 — Aquela luz brilhante tinha me deixado cego. Por isso os meus companheiros me pegaram pela mão e me levaram até Damasco.
12 And a man, Ananye, that bi the lawe hadde wytnessyng of alle Jewis dwellinge in Damask,
12 Havia ali um homem chamado Ananias. Ele era religioso, obedecia à nossa Lei , e todos os judeus que moravam em Damasco o respeitavam.
13 cam to me, and stood niy, and seide to me, Saul, brother, biholde. And Y in the same our biheelde in to hym.
13 Esse homem veio me procurar, chegou perto de mim e disse: “Irmão Saulo, veja de novo!” — No mesmo instante comecei a ver de novo e olhei para ele.
14 And he seide, God of oure fadris hath bifor ordeyned thee, that thou schuldist knowe the wille of him, and schuldist se the riytful man, and here the vois of his mouth.
14 Então ele disse: “Saulo, o Deus dos nossos antepassados escolheu você para conhecer a vontade dele, para ver o seu Bom Servo e para ouvir o Servo falar com você pessoalmente.
15 For thou schalt be his witnesse to alle men, of tho thingis that thou hast seyn and herd.
15 Pois você será testemunha dele para dizer a todos aquilo que você tem visto e ouvido.
16 And now, what dwellist thou? Rise vp, and be baptisid, and waische awei thi synnes, bi the name of hym clepid to help.
16 E agora não espere mais. Levante-se, peça a ajuda do Senhor e seja batizado, e os seus pecados serão perdoados.”
17 And it was don to me, as Y turnede ayen in to Jerusalem, and preyede in the temple, that Y was maad in rauysching of soule,
17 E Paulo terminou, dizendo: — Então eu voltei para Jerusalém. Quando estava orando no Templo, tive uma visão.
18 and Y siy him seiynge to me, Hiye thou, and go out faste of Jerusalem, for thei schulen not resseyue thi witnessing of me.
18 Vi o Senhor, e ele me disse: “Saia depressa de Jerusalém porque as pessoas daqui não aceitarão o que você vai dizer a meu respeito.”
19 And Y seide, Lord, thei witen, that Y was closing togidir `in to prisoun, and betinge bi synagogis hem that bileueden `in to thee.
19 — Eu respondi: “Senhor, eles sabem muito bem que eu ia às sinagogas , e prendia os que criam em ti, e batia neles.
20 And whanne the blood of Steuene, thi witnesse, was sched out, Y stood niy, and consentide, and kept the clothis of men that slowen hym.
20 Quando estavam matando Estêvão, que falava a respeito de ti, ó Senhor, eu estava ali, concordando com aquele crime. E até tomei conta das capas dos assassinos dele.”
21 And he seide to me, Go thou, for Y schal sende thee fer to naciouns.
21 — Aí o Senhor disse: “Vá, pois eu vou enviá-lo para bem longe; vou enviá-lo aos não judeus.”
22 And thei herden him til this word; and thei reiseden her vois, and seiden, Take awei fro the erthe siche a maner man; for it is not leueful, that he lyue.
22 A multidão ficou ouvindo Paulo até que ele disse isso, mas aí eles começaram a gritar com toda a força: — Matem esse homem! — Ele não merece viver!
23 And whanne thei crieden, and kesten awei her clothis, and threwen dust in to the eir,
23 Eles gritavam, sacudiam as capas no ar e jogavam poeira para cima.
24 the tribune comaundide hym to be led in to castels, and to be betun with scourgis, and to be turmentid, that he wiste, for what cause thei crieden so to him.
24 Então o comandante mandou que os seus soldados levassem Paulo para dentro da fortaleza. Mandou também que o chicoteassem para que ele contasse por que a multidão estava gritando contra ele.
25 And whanne thei hadden boundun hym with cordis, Poul seide to a centurien stondinge niy to hym, Whether it is leueful to you, to scourge a Romayn, and vndampned?
25 Porém, quando o estavam amarrando para chicoteá-lo, Paulo perguntou ao oficial romano que estava perto dele: — Será que vocês têm o direito de chicotear um cidadão romano, especialmente um que não foi condenado por nenhum crime?
26 And whanne this thing was herd, the centurien wente to the tribune, and telde to hym, and seide, What art thou to doynge? for this man is a citeseyn of Rome.
26 Quando o oficial ouviu isso, foi falar com o comandante e disse: — O que é que o senhor vai fazer? Aquele homem é cidadão romano!
27 And the tribune cam niy, and seide to hym, Seie thou to me, whether thou art a Romayn?
27 Então o comandante foi falar com Paulo e perguntou: — Me diga uma coisa: você é mesmo cidadão romano? — Sou! — respondeu Paulo.
28 And he seide, Yhe. And the tribune answeride, Y with myche summe gat this fredom. And Poul seide, And Y was borun a citeseyn of Rome.
28 Aí o comandante disse: — Eu também sou, e isso me custou muito dinheiro. Paulo respondeu: — Pois eu sou cidadão romano de nascimento.
29 Therfor anoon thei that schulden haue turmentid hym, departiden awei fro hym. And the tribune dredde, aftir that he wiste, that he was a citeseyn of Rome, and for he hadde boundun hym.
29 Imediatamente os homens que iam chicoteá-lo recuaram. E o próprio comandante ficou com medo ao saber que Paulo era cidadão romano e ele tinha mandado amarrá-lo.
30 But in the dai suynge he wolde wite more diligentli, for what cause he were accusid of the Jewis, and vnbounde hym, and comaundide prestis and al the counsel to come togidir. And he brouyte forth Poul, and sette hym among hem.
30 O comandante queria saber com certeza por que os judeus estavam acusando Paulo. Então, no dia seguinte, mandou que tirassem as correntes que o prendiam e ordenou que os chefes dos sacerdotes e todo o Conselho Superior se reunissem. Depois mandou que trouxessem Paulo e o colocassem em frente deles.
