1 A feithful word. If ony man desirith a bishopriche, he desirith a good werk.
1 Fiel é a palavra: se alguém deseja o episcopado, excelente obra almeja.
2 Therfor it bihoueth a byschop to be with out repreef, the hosebonde of o wijf, sobre, prudent, chast, vertewous, holdinge hospitalite, a techere;
2 É necessário, pois, que o bispo seja irrepreensível, esposo de uma só mulher, moderado, sensato, modesto, hospitaleiro, apto para ensinar;
3 not youun myche to wyn, not a smytere, but temperat, not ful of chiding, not coueitouse, wel reulinge his hous,
3 não dado ao vinho, nem violento, porém cordial, inimigo de conflitos, não avarento;
4 and haue sones suget with al chastite;
4 e que governe bem a própria casa, criando os filhos sob disciplina, com todo o respeito.
5 for if ony man kan not gouerne his house, hou schal he haue diligence of the chirche of God? not new conuertid to the feith,
5 Pois, se alguém não sabe governar a própria casa, como cuidará da igreja de Deus?
6 lest he be borun vp in to pride, and falle in to doom of the deuel.
6 Que o bispo não seja recém-convertido, para não acontecer que fique cheio de orgulho e incorra na condenação do diabo.
7 For it bihoueth hym to haue also good witnessing of hem that ben with outforth, that he falle not in to repreef, and in to the snare of the deuel.
7 É necessário, também, que ele tenha bom testemunho dos de fora, a fim de não cair na desonra e no laço do diabo.
8 Also it bihoueth dekenes to be chast, not double tungid, not youun myche to wyn, not suynge foul wynnyng;
8 Do mesmo modo, quanto a diáconos, é necessário que sejam respeitáveis, de uma só palavra, não inclinados a muito vinho, não gananciosos,
9 that han the mysterie of feith in clene conscience.
9 conservando o mistério da fé com a consciência limpa.
10 But be thei preued first, and mynystre so, hauynge no cryme.
10 Também estes devem ser primeiramente experimentados; e, caso se mostrem irrepreensíveis, que exerçam o diaconato.
11 Also it bihoueth wymmen to be chast, not bacbitinge, sobre, feithful in alle thingis.
11 Do mesmo modo, quanto a mulheres, é necessário que elas sejam respeitáveis, não maldizentes, moderadas e fiéis em tudo.
12 Dekenes be hosebondis of o wijf; whiche gouerne wel her sones and her housis.
12 O diácono seja marido de uma só mulher e governe bem os seus filhos e a própria casa.
13 For thei that mynystren wel, schulen gete a good degre to hem silf, and myche triste in the feith, that is in Crist Jhesu.
13 Pois os que desempenharem bem o diaconato alcançarão para si mesmos uma posição de honra e muita ousadia na fé em Cristo Jesus.
14 Sone Timothe, Y write to thee these thingis, hopinge that Y schal come soon to thee;
14 Escrevo estas coisas a você, esperando ir vê-lo em breve.
15 but if Y tarie, that thou wite, hou it bihoueth thee to lyue in the hous of God, that is the chirche of lyuynge God, a pilere and sadnesse of treuthe.
15 Mas, se eu demorar, você saberá como se deve proceder na casa de Deus, que é a igreja do Deus vivo, coluna e fundamento da verdade.
16 And opynli it is a greet sacrament of pitee, that thing that was schewid in fleisch, it is iustified in spirit, it apperid to aungels, it is prechid to hethene men, it is bileuyd in the world, it is takun vp in glorie.
16 Sem dúvida, grande é o mistério da piedade: “Aquele que foi manifestado na carne foi justificado em espírito, visto pelos anjos, pregado entre os gentios, crido no mundo, recebido na glória.”
