1 Se ye what maner charite the fadir yaf to vs, that we be named the sones of God, and ben hise sones. For this thing the world knewe not vs, for it knew not hym.
1 Contemple, que tipo de amor o Pai nos outorgou, que fôssemos chamados filhos de Deus. Portanto, o mundo não nos conhece, porque não o conheceu.
2 Moost dere britheren, now we ben the sones of God, and yit it apperide not, what we schulen be. We witen, that whanne he schal appere, we schulen be lijk hym, for we schulen se hym as he is.
2 Amados, agora somos filhos de Deus, e ainda não se manifestou o que haveremos de ser. Mas sabemos que, quando ele aparecer, haveremos de ser semelhantes a ele; porque haveremos de vê-lo assim como ele é.
3 And ech man that hath this hope in hym, makith hym silf hooli, as he is hooli.
3 E qualquer homem que tem nele esta esperança purifica-se a si mesmo, assim como ele é puro.
4 Ech man that doith synne, doith also wickidnesse, and synne is wickidnesse.
4 Qualquer que comete pecado, também transgride a lei, porque o pecado é a transgressão da lei.
5 And ye witen, that he apperide to do awei synnes, and synne is not in hym.
5 E vós sabeis que ele foi manifestado para carregar os nossos pecados; e nele não há pecado.
6 Ech man that dwellith in hym, synneth not; and ech that synneth, seeth not hym, nether knew hym.
6 Qualquer que permanece nele não peca; qualquer que peca não o viu e nem o conheceu.
7 Litle sones, no man disseyue you; he that doith riytwysnesse, is iust, as also he is iust.
7 Filhinhos, não deixeis homem algum vos enganar. Aquele que pratica a justiça é justo, assim como ele é justo.
8 He that doith synne, is of the deuel; for the deuel synneth fro the bigynnyng. In this thing the sone of God apperide, that he vndo the werkis of the deuel.
8 Aquele que comete pecado é do diabo; porque o diabo peca desde o princípio. Para este propósito o Filho de Deus foi manifestado: para que ele pudesse destruir as obras do diabo.
9 Ech man that is borun of God, doith not synne; for the seed of God dwellith in hym, and he may not do synne, for he is borun of God.
9 Aquele que é nascido de Deus não comete pecado; porque a sua semente permanece nele; e não pode pecar, porque é nascido de Deus.
10 In this thing the sones of God ben knowun, and the sones of the feend. Ech man that is not iust, is not of God, and he that loueth not his brothir.
10 Nisto os filhos de Deus são manifestos, e os filhos do diabo. Aquele que não pratica a justiça, não é de Deus; e nem aquele que não ama o seu irmão.
11 For this is the tellyng, that ye herden at the bigynnyng, that ye loue ech othere;
11 Porque esta é a mensagem que ouvistes desde o princípio: que devemos amar uns aos outros.
12 not as Caym, that was of the yuele, and slouy his brother. And for what thing slouy he him? for hise werkis weren yuele, and hise brotheris iust.
12 Não como Caim, que era daquele perverso, e assassinou o seu irmão. E por que o assassinou? Porque as suas próprias obras eram más, e as de seu irmão justas.
13 Britheren, nyle ye wondre, if the world hatith you.
13 Não vos maravilheis, meus irmãos, se o mundo vos odeia.
14 We witen, that we ben translatid fro deeth to lijf, for we louen britheren. He that loueth not, dwellith in deth.
14 Nós sabemos que passamos da morte para a vida, porque amamos os irmãos. Aquele que não ama o seu irmão permanece na morte.
15 Ech man that hatith his brother, is a man sleere; and ye witen, that ech mansleere hath not euerlastinge lijf dwellinge in hym.
15 Qualquer que odeia o seu irmão é homicida. E vós sabeis que a vida eterna não permanece em nenhum homicida.
16 In this thing we han knowe the charite of God, for he puttide his lijf for vs, and we owen to putte oure lyues for oure britheren.
16 Nisto percebemos o amor de Deus: porque ele deu a sua vida por nós, e nós devemos dar as nossas vidas pelos irmãos.
17 He that hath the catel of this world, and seeth that his brothir hath nede, and closith his entrailis fro hym, hou dwellith the charite of God in hym?
17 Porém, quem tem os bens deste mundo, e vê que seu irmão possui necessidade, e fecha-lhe suas entranhas da compaixão, como habita nele o amor de Deus?
18 Mi litle sones, loue we not in word, nethir in tunge, but in werk and treuthe.
18 Meus filhinhos, não amemos de palavra, nem de língua, mas por obra e em verdade.
19 In this thing we knowen, that we ben of treuthe, and in his siyt we monesten oure hertis.
19 E nisto sabemos que somos da verdade, e asseguraremos os nossos corações diante dele.
20 For if oure herte repreueth vs, God is more than oure hert, and knowith alle thingis.
20 Porque se o nosso coração nos condena, Deus é maior do que o nosso coração, e conhece todas as coisas.
21 Moost dere britheren, if oure herte repreueth not vs, we han trust to God;
21 Amados, se o nosso coração não nos condena, então temos nós confiança para com Deus.
22 and what euer we schulen axe, we schulen resseyue of hym, for we kepen hise comaundementis, and we don tho thingis that ben plesaunt bifor hym.
22 E qualquer coisa que lhe pedirmos, dele a receberemos, porque guardamos os seus mandamentos, e fazemos as coisas que são agradáveis à sua vista.
23 And this is the comaundement of God, that we bileue in the name of his sone Jhesu Crist, and that we loue ech othere, as he yaf heeste to vs.
23 E este é o seu mandamento: Que creiamos no nome de seu Filho Jesus Cristo, e nos amemos uns aos outros, segundo o mandamento que ele nos deu.
24 And he that kepith hise comaundementis, dwellith in hym, and he in hym. And in this thing we witen, that he dwellith in vs, bi the spirit, whom he yaf to vs.
24 E aquele que guarda os seus mandamentos habita nele, e ele nele. E nisto sabemos que ele está em nós, pelo Espírito que ele nos deu.
