1 Do not be eager, my brethren, for many among you to become teachers; for you know that we teachers shall undergo severer judgement.
1 Meus irmãos, somente poucos de vocês deveriam se tornar mestres na Igreja, pois vocês sabem que nós, os que ensinamos, seremos julgados com mais rigor do que os outros.
2 For we often stumble and fall, all of us. If there is any one who never stumbles in speech, that man has reached maturity of character and is able to curb his whole nature.
2 Todos nós sempre cometemos erros. Quem não comete nenhum erro no que diz é uma pessoa madura, capaz de controlar todo o seu corpo.
3 Remember that we put the horses' bit into their mouths to make them obey us, and so we turn their whole bodies round.
3 Até na boca dos cavalos colocamos um freio para que nos obedeçam e assim fazemos com que vão aonde queremos.
4 So too with ships, great as they are, and often driven along by strong gales, yet they can be steered with a very small rudder in whichever direction the caprice of the man at the helm chooses.
4 Pensem no navio: grande como é, empurrado por ventos fortes, ele é guiado por um pequeno leme e vai aonde o piloto quer.
5 In the same way the tongue is an insignificant part of the body, but it is immensely boastful. Remember how a mere spark may set a vast forest in flames.
5 É isto o que acontece com a língua: mesmo pequena, ela se gaba de grandes coisas. Vejam como uma grande floresta pode ser incendiada por uma pequena chama!
6 And the tongue is a fire. That world of iniquity, the tongue, is placed within us spotting and soiling our whole nature, and setting the whole round of our lives on fire, being itself set on fire by Gehenna.
6 A língua é um fogo. Ela é um mundo de maldade, ocupa o seu lugar no nosso corpo e espalha o mal em todo o nosso ser. Com o fogo que vem do próprio inferno, ela põe toda a nossa vida em chamas.
7 For brute nature under all its forms –beasts and birds, reptiles and fishes– can be subjected and kept in subjection by human nature.
7 O ser humano é capaz de dominar todas as criaturas e tem dominado os animais selvagens, os pássaros, os animais que se arrastam pelo chão e os peixes.
8 But the tongue no man or woman is able to tame. It is an ever-busy mischief, and is full of deadly poison.
8 Mas ninguém ainda foi capaz de dominar a língua. Ela é má, cheia de veneno mortal, e ninguém a pode controlar.
9 With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in God's likeness.
9 Usamos a língua tanto para agradecer ao Senhor e Pai como para amaldiçoar as pessoas, que foram criadas parecidas com Deus.
10 Out of the same mouth there proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be.
10 Da mesma boca saem palavras tanto de agradecimento como de maldição. Meus irmãos, isso não deve ser assim.
11 In a fountain, are fresh water and bitter sent forth from the same opening?
11 Por acaso pode a mesma fonte jorrar água doce e água amarga?
12 Can a fig-tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine yield figs? No; and neither can salt water yield sweet.
12 Meus irmãos, por acaso pode uma figueira dar azeitonas ou um pé de uva dar figos? Assim, também, uma fonte de água salgada não pode dar água doce.
13 Which of you is a wise and well-instructed man? Let him prove it by a right life with conduct guided by a wisely teachable spirit.
13 Existe entre vocês alguém que seja sábio e inteligente? Pois então que prove isso pelo seu bom comportamento e pelas suas ações, praticadas com humildade e sabedoria.
14 But if in your hearts you have bitter feelings of envy and rivalry, do not speak boastfully and falsely, in defiance of the truth.
14 Mas, se no coração de vocês existe inveja, amargura e egoísmo, então não mintam contra a verdade, gabando-se de serem sábios.
15 That is not the wisdom which comes down from above: it belongs to earth, to the unspiritual nature, and to evil spirits.
15 Essa espécie de sabedoria não vem do céu; ela é deste mundo, é da nossa natureza humana e é diabólica.
16 For where envy and rivalry are, there also are unrest and every vile deed.
16 Pois, onde há inveja e egoísmo, há também confusão e todo tipo de coisas más.
17 The wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceful, courteous, not self-willed, full of compassion and kind actions, free from favouritism and from all insincerity.
17 A sabedoria que vem do céu é antes de tudo pura; e é também pacífica, bondosa e amigável. Ela é cheia de misericórdia, produz uma colheita de boas ações, não trata os outros pela sua aparência e é livre de fingimento.
18 And peace, for those who strive for peace, is the seed of which the harvest is righteousness.
18 Pois a bondade é a colheita produzida pelas sementes que foram plantadas pelos que trabalham em favor da paz.
