1 But as for me Paul, I entreat you by the gentleness and self-forgetfulness of Christ–I who when among you have not an imposing personal presence, but when absent am fearlessly outspoken in dealing with you.
1 Eu, Paulo, vos exorto pela mansidão e bondade de Cristo, eu que me mostro humilde quando estou entre vós, mas, quando longe, sou ousado convosco.
2 I beseech you not to compel me when present to make a bold display of the confidence with which I reckon I shall show my `courage' against some who reckon that we are guided by worldly principles.
2 Peço-vos que, quando eu estiver presente, não me veja obrigado a usar de minha autoridade de que pretendo realmente usar com certas pessoas que imaginam que nós procedemos com intenções humanas.
3 For, though we are still living in the world, it is no worldly warfare that we are waging.
3 Porque, ainda que vivamos na carne, não militamos segundo a carne.
4 The weapons with which we fight are not human weapons, but are mighty for God in overthrowing strong fortresses.
4 Não são carnais as armas com que lutamos. São poderosas, em Deus, capazes de arrasar fortificações.
5 For we overthrow arrogant `reckonings,' and every stronghold that towers high in defiance of the knowledge of God, and we carry off every thought as if into slavery–into subjection to Christ;
5 Nós aniquilamos todo raciocínio e todo orgulho que se levanta contra o conhecimento de Deus, e cativamos todo pensamento e o reduzimos à obediência a Cristo.
6 while we hold ourselves in readiness to punish every act of disobedience, as soon as ever you as a Church have fully shown your obedience.
6 Estamos prontos também para castigar todos os desobedientes, assim que for perfeita a vossa obediência.
7 Is it outward appearances you look to? If any man is confident as regards himself that he specially belongs to Christ, let him consider again and reflect that just as he belongs to Christ, so also do we.
7 Julgais as coisas pela aparência!... Quem se gloria de pertencer a Cristo considere que, como ele é de Cristo, assim também nós o somos.
8 If, however, I were to boast more loudly of our Apostolic authority, which the Lord has given us that we may build you up, not pull you down, I should have no reason to feel ashamed.
8 Ainda que eu me orgulhasse um pouco em demasia da autoridade que o Senhor nos deu, para vossa edificação e não para vossa ruína, não teria de que envergonhar-me.
9 Let it not seem as if I wanted to frighten you by my letters.
9 Não quero, porém, dar a impressão de querer aterrar-vos com minhas cartas.
10 For they say »His letters are authoritative and forcible, but his personal presence is unimpressive, and as for eloquence, he has none.«
10 Suas cartas, dizem, são imperativas e fortes, mas, quando está presente, a sua pessoa é fraca e a palavra desprezível.
11 Let such people take this into their reckoning, that whatever we are in word by our letters when absent, the same are we also in act when present.
11 Quem assim pensa, fique sabendo que quais somos por escrito nas cartas, quando estamos ausentes, tais seremos também de fato, quando estivermos presentes.
12 For we have not the `courage' to rank ourselves among, or compare ourselves with, certain persons distinguished by their self-commendation. Yet they are not wise, measuring themselves, as they do, by one another and comparing themselves with one another.
12 Em verdade, não ousamos equiparar-nos nem comparar-nos com alguns que se preconizam a si próprios. Medindo-se eles conforme a sua própria medida e comparando-se consigo mesmos, dão provas de pouco bom senso.
13 We, however, will not exceed due limits in our boasting, but will keep within the limits of the sphere which God has assigned to us as a limit, which reaches even to you.
13 Nós outros não nos gloriaremos além da medida, mas permaneceremos dentro do campo de ação que Deus nos determinou, levando-nos até vós.
14 For there is no undue stretch of authority on our part, as though it did not extend to you. We pressed on even to Corinth, and were the first to proclaim to you the Good News of the Christ.
14 Não passamos além dos limites. Estaríamos passando, caso não houvéssemos chegado até vós. Ora, realmente temos chegado até vós, pregando o Evangelho de Cristo.
15 We do not exceed our due limits, and take credit for other men's labours; but we entertain the hope that, as your faith grows, we shall gain promotion among you –still keeping within our own sphere– promotion to a larger field of labour,
15 Não nos ufanamos além da medida, cobrindo-nos de trabalhos alheios. Esperamos que, com o progresso de vossa fé, nossa obra cresça entre vós dentro do quadro de ação que nos foi determinado.
16 and shall tell the Good News in the districts beyond you, not boasting in another man's sphere about work already done by him.
16 Assim esperamos levar o Evangelho aos países que ficam além de vós, sem nos gloriarmos das obras realizadas por outros dentro do domínio reservado a eles.
17 But »whoever boasts, let his boast be in the Lord.«
17 Ora, quem se gloria, glorie-se no Senhor.
18 For it is not the man that commends himself who is really approved, but he whom the Lord commends.
18 Pois merece a aprovação não aquele que se recomenda a si mesmo, mas aquele que o Senhor recomenda.
