1 Let all who are under the yoke of slavery hold their own masters to be deserving of honour, so that the name of God and the Christian teaching may not be spoken against.
1 Aqueles que são escravos devem tratar o seu dono com todo o respeito, para que ninguém fale mal do nome de Deus e dos nossos ensinamentos.
2 And those who have believing masters should not be wanting in respect towards them because they are their brethren, but should serve them all the more willingly because those who profit by the faithful service rendered are believers and are friends.
2 E os escravos que têm dono cristão não devem perder o respeito por ele por ser seu irmão na fé. Pelo contrário, devem trabalhar para ele melhor ainda, pois o dono, que recebe os seus serviços, é cristão e irmão amado. Ensine e recomende estas coisas:
3 So teach and exhort. If any one is a teacher of any other kind of doctrine, and refuses assent to wholesome instructions –those of our Lord Jesus Christ– and the teaching that harmonizes with true godliness,
3 Se alguém ensina alguma doutrina diferente e não concorda com as verdadeiras palavras do nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo e com os ensinamentos da nossa religião,
4 he is puffed up with pride and has no true knowledge, but is crazy over discussions and controversies about words which give rise to envy, quarrelling, revilings, ill-natured suspicions,
4 essa pessoa está cheia de orgulho e não sabe nada. Discutir e brigar a respeito de palavras é como uma doença nessas pessoas. E daí vêm invejas, brigas, insultos, desconfianças maldosas
5 and persistent wranglings on the part of people whose intellects are disordered and they themselves blinded to all knowledge of the truth; who imagine that godliness means gain.
5 e discussões sem fim, como costumam fazer as pessoas que perderam o juízo e não têm mais a verdade. Essa gente pensa que a religião é um meio de enriquecer.
6 And godliness is gain, when associated with contentment;
6 É claro que a religião é uma fonte de muita riqueza, mas só para a pessoa que se contenta com o que tem.
7 for we brought nothing into the world, nor can we carry anything out of it;
7 O que foi que trouxemos para o mundo? Nada! E o que é que vamos levar do mundo? Nada!
8 and if we have food and clothing, with these we will be satisfied.
8 Portanto, se temos comida e roupas, fiquemos contentes com isso.
9 But people who are determined to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many unwise and pernicious ways which sink mankind in destruction and ruin.
9 Porém os que querem ficar ricos caem em pecado, ao serem tentados, e ficam presos na armadilha de muitos desejos tolos, que fazem mal e levam as pessoas a se afundarem na desgraça e na destruição.
10 For from love of money all sorts of evils arise; and some have so hankered after money as to be led astray from the faith and be pierced through with countless sorrows.
10 Pois o amor ao dinheiro é uma fonte de todos os tipos de males. E algumas pessoas, por quererem tanto ter dinheiro, se desviaram da fé e encheram a sua vida de sofrimentos.
11 But you, O man of God, must flee from these things; and strive for uprightness, godliness, good faith, love, fortitude, and a forgiving temper.
11 Mas você, homem de Deus, fuja de tudo isso. Viva uma vida correta, de dedicação a Deus, de fé, de amor, de perseverança e de respeito pelos outros.
12 Exert all your strength in the honourable struggle for the faith; lay hold of the Life of the Ages, to which you were called, when you made your noble profession of faith before many witnesses.
12 Corra a boa corrida da fé e ganhe a vida eterna. Pois foi para essa vida que Deus o chamou quando você deu o seu belo testemunho de fé na presença de muitas testemunhas .
13 I charge you –as in the presence of God who gives life to all creatures, and of Christ Jesus who at the bar of Pontius Pilate made a noble profession of faith–
13 Agora, diante de Deus, que dá vida a todas as criaturas, e diante de Cristo Jesus, que deu o seu belo testemunho de fé em frente de Pôncio Pilatos, eu ordeno a você o seguinte:
14 that you keep God's commandments stainlessly and without reproach till the Appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.
14 Cumpra a sua missão com fidelidade, para que ninguém possa culpá-lo de nada, e continue assim até o dia em que o nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo aparecer.
15 For, as its appointed time, this will be brought about by the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
15 Quando chegar o tempo certo, Deus fará com que isso aconteça, o mesmo Deus que é o bendito e único Rei, o Rei dos reis e o Senhor dos senhores,
16 who alone possesses immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, and whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be eternal honour and power! Amen.
16 o único que é imortal . Ele vive na luz, e ninguém pode chegar perto dela. Ninguém nunca o viu, nem poderá ver. A ele pertencem a honra e o poder eterno! Amém !
17 Impress on those who are rich in the present age that they must not be haughty nor set their hopes on riches –that unstable foundation– but on God who provides us richly with all things for our enjoyment.
17 Aos que têm riquezas neste mundo ordene que não sejam orgulhosos e que não ponham a sua esperança nessas riquezas, pois elas não dão segurança nenhuma. Que eles ponham a sua esperança em Deus, que nos dá todas as coisas em grande quantidade, para o nosso prazer!
18 They must be beneficent, rich in noble deeds, open-handed and liberal;
18 Mande que façam o bem, que sejam ricos em boas ações, que sejam generosos e estejam prontos para repartir com os outros aquilo que eles têm.
19 storing up for themselves that which shall be a solid foundation for the future, that they may lay hold of the Life which is life indeed.
19 Desse modo eles juntarão para si mesmos um tesouro que será uma base firme para o futuro. E assim conseguirão receber a vida, a verdadeira vida.
20 O Timothy, guard the truths entrusted to you, shunning irreligious and frivolous talk, and controversy with what is falsely called `knowledge';
20 Timóteo, guarde bem aquilo que foi entregue aos seus cuidados. Evite os falatórios que ofendem a Deus e as discussões tolas a respeito daquilo que alguns, de modo errado, chamam de “conhecimento”.
21 of which some have spoken boastfully in connexion with the true faith, and have erred. Grace be with you all.
