1 Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God our Saviour and Christ Jesus our hope:
1 Eu, Paulo, apóstolo de Cristo Jesus, por ordem de Deus, nosso Salvador, e de Cristo Jesus, nossa esperança,
2 To Timothy, my own true son in the faith. May grace, mercy and peace be granted to you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
2 escrevo esta carta a Timóteo, meu verdadeiro filho na fé. Que Deus, o Pai, e Cristo Jesus, nosso Senhor, lhe deem graça, misericórdia e paz.
3 When I was on my journey to Macedonia I begged you to remain on in Ephesus that you might remonstrate with certain persons because of their erroneous teaching
3 Quando parti para a Macedônia, pedi a você que ficasse em Éfeso e advertisse certas pessoas de que não ensinassem coisas contrárias à verdade,
4 and the attention they bestow on mere fables and endless pedigrees, such as lead to controversy rather than to a true stewardship for God, which only exists where there is faith. And I make the same request now.
4 nem desperdiçassem tempo com discussões intermináveis sobre mitos e genealogias, que só levam a especulações sem sentido em vez de promover o propósito de Deus, que é realizado pela fé.
5 But the end sought to be secured by exhortation is the love which springs from a pure heart, a clear conscience and a sincere faith.
5 O alvo de minha instrução é o amor que vem de um coração puro, de uma consciência limpa e de uma fé sincera.
6 From these some have drifted away, and have wandered into empty words.
6 Alguns, porém, se desviaram dessas coisas e passam o tempo em discussões inúteis.
7 They are ambitious to be teachers of the Law, although they do not understand either their own words or what the things are about which they make such confident assertions.
7 Querem ser conhecidos como mestres da lei, mas não sabem do que estão falando, embora o façam com tanta confiança.
8 Now we know that the Law is good, if a man uses it in the way it should be used,
8 Sabemos que a lei é boa quando usada corretamente.
9 and remembers that a law is not enacted to control a righteous man, but for the lawless and rebellious, the irreligious and sinful, the godless and profane–for those who strike their fathers or their mothers, for murderers,
9 Pois a lei não foi criada para os que fazem o que é certo, mas para os transgressores e rebeldes, para os irreverentes e pecadores, para os ímpios e profanos. Ela é para os que matam pai ou mãe ou cometem outros homicídios,
10 fornicators, sodomites, slave-dealers, liars and false witnesses; and for whatever else is opposed to wholesome teaching
10 para os que vivem na imoralidade sexual, para os que praticam a homossexualidade, e também para os sequestradores, os mentirosos, os que juram falsamente ou que fazem qualquer outra coisa que contradiga o ensino verdadeiro,
11 and is not in accordance with the Good News of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
11 que vem das boas-novas gloriosas confiadas a mim por nosso Deus bendito.
12 I am thankful to Him who made me strong –even Christ Jesus our Lord– because He has judged me to be faithful and has put me into His service,
12 Agradeço àquele que me deu forças, Cristo Jesus, nosso Senhor, que me considerou digno de confiança e me designou para servi-lo,
13 though I was previously a blasphemer and a persecutor and had been insolent in outrage. Yet mercy was shown me, because I had acted ignorantly, not having as yet believed;
13 embora eu fosse blasfemo, perseguidor e violento. Contudo, recebi misericórdia, porque agia por ignorância e incredulidade.
14 and the grace of our Lord came to me in overflowing fulness, conferring faith on me and the love which is in Christ Jesus.
14 O Senhor fez sua graça transbordar e me encheu da fé e do amor que vêm de Cristo Jesus.
15 Faithful is the saying, and deserving of universal acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; among whom I stand foremost.
15 Esta é uma afirmação digna de confiança, e todos devem aceitá-la: “Cristo Jesus veio ao mundo para salvar os pecadores”, e eu sou o pior de todos.
16 But mercy was shown me in order that in me as the foremost of sinners Christ Jesus might display the fulness of His long-suffering patience as an example to encourage those who would afterwards be resting their faith on Him with a view to the Life of the Ages.
16 Mas foi por isso que eu, o pior dos pecadores, recebi misericórdia, para que assim Cristo Jesus mostrasse quanto é paciente. Desse modo, sirvo de exemplo a todos que vierem a crer nele para a vida eterna.
17 Now to the immortal and invisible King of the Ages, who alone is God, be honour and glory to the Ages of the Ages! Amen.
17 Honra e glória a Deus para todo o sempre! Ele é o Rei eterno, invisível e imortal; ele é o único Deus. Amém.
18 This is the charge which I entrust to you, my son Timothy, in accordance with the inspired instructions concerning you which were given me long ago, that being equipped with them as your armour you may be continually fighting the good fight,
18 Timóteo, meu filho, estas são minhas instruções para você, com base nas palavras proféticas ditas tempos atrás a seu respeito. Que elas o ajudem a lutar o bom combate.
19 holding fast to faith and a clear conscience, which some have cast aside and have made shipwreck of their faith.
19 Apegue-se à fé e mantenha a consciência limpa, pois alguns rejeitaram deliberadamente a consciência e, como resultado, a fé que tinham naufragou.
20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered to Satan so that they may be taught not to blaspheme.
20 Himeneu e Alexandre são dois exemplos. Eu os entreguei a Satanás, para que aprendam a não blasfemar.
