1 Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
1 Jacó estava continuando a sua viagem quando alguns anjos de Deus foram encontrar-se com ele.
2 When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim.
2 Quando Jacó os viu, disse: — Este é o acampamento de Deus. Por isso pôs naquele lugar o nome de Maanaim .
3 Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.
3 Jacó mandou mensageiros para a região de Seir, também chamada de Edom, a fim de se encontrarem com Esaú
4 He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
4 e lhe darem esta mensagem: “Eu, Jacó, estou às suas ordens para servi-lo. Durante todo esse tempo morei com Labão.
5 I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
5 Tenho gado, jumentos, ovelhas, cabras, escravos e escravas. Estou mandando este recado ao senhor, esperando ser bem-recebido.”
6 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
6 Os mensageiros voltaram e disseram: — Estivemos com Esaú, o seu irmão. Ele já vem vindo para se encontrar com o senhor. E vem com quatrocentos homens.
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies.
7 Quando Jacó ouviu isso, teve muito medo e ficou preocupado. Então dividiu em dois grupos a gente que estava com ele e também as ovelhas, as cabras, o gado e os camelos.
8 He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
8 Ele pensou que, se Esaú viesse e atacasse um grupo, o outro poderia escapar.
9 Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’
9 Depois Jacó fez esta oração: — Ouve-me, ó
10 I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.
10 Eu, teu servo , não mereço toda a bondade e fidelidade com que me tens tratado. Quando atravessei o rio Jordão, eu tinha apenas um bastão e agora estou voltando com estes dois grupos de pessoas e animais.
11 Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.
11 Ó Senhor , eu te peço que me salves do meu irmão Esaú. Tenho medo de que ele venha e me mate e também as mulheres e as crianças.
12 You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
12 Lembra que prometeste que tudo me correria bem e que os meus descendentes seriam como a areia da praia, tantos que ninguém poderia contar.
13 He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:
13 Naquela noite Jacó dormiu ali. Depois ele escolheu alguns dos seus animais para dar de presente a Esaú.
14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
14 Escolheu duzentas cabras e vinte bodes, duzentas ovelhas e vinte carneiros,
15 thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.
15 trinta camelas com as suas crias, que ainda mamavam, quarenta vacas e dez touros, e vinte jumentas e dez jumentos.
16 He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.”
16 Jacó dividiu esses animais em grupos e pôs um empregado para tomar conta de cada grupo. E deu esta ordem: — Vocês vão na frente, deixando um espaço entre os grupos.
17 He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
17 Jacó disse ao primeiro empregado: — Quando o meu irmão Esaú se encontrar com você, ele vai perguntar: “Quem é o seu patrão? Aonde você vai? E de quem são esses animais que você vai levando?”
18 Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
18 Então responda assim: “Estes animais são do seu criado Jacó. São um presente que ele está enviando ao seu patrão Esaú. E ele também vem vindo aí atrás.”
19 He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.
19 Também ao segundo, e ao terceiro, e a todos os outros que tomavam conta dos grupos, Jacó disse: — Quando vocês se encontrarem com Esaú, digam a mesma coisa.
20 You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
20 E não esqueçam de dizer isto: “O seu criado Jacó vem vindo aí atrás.” É que Jacó estava pensando assim: “Vou acalmar Esaú com os presentes que irão na minha frente. E, quando nos encontrarmos, talvez ele me perdoe.”
21 So the present passed over before him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.
21 Desse modo Jacó mandou os presentes na frente e passou aquela noite no acampamento.
22 He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.
22 Naquela mesma noite Jacó se levantou e atravessou o rio Jaboque, levando consigo as suas duas mulheres, as suas duas concubinas e os seus onze filhos.
23 He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.
23 Depois que as pessoas passaram, Jacó fez com que também passasse tudo o que era seu;
24 Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.
24 mas ele ficou para trás, sozinho. Aí veio um homem que lutou com ele até o dia amanhecer.
25 When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
25 Quando o homem viu que não podia vencer, deu um golpe na junta da coxa de Jacó, de modo que ela ficou fora do lugar.
26 The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
26 Então o homem disse: — Solte-me, pois já está amanhecendo. — Não solto enquanto o senhor não me abençoar — respondeu Jacó.
27 He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
27 Aí o homem perguntou: — Como você se chama? — Jacó — respondeu ele.
28 He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
28 Então o homem disse: — O seu nome não será mais Jacó. Você lutou com Deus e com os homens e venceu; por isso o seu nome será Israel .
29 Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
29 — Agora diga-me o seu nome — pediu Jacó. O homem respondeu: — Por que você quer saber o meu nome? E ali ele abençoou Jacó.
30 Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
30 Então Jacó disse: — Eu vi Deus face a face, mas ainda estou vivo. Por isso ele pôs naquele lugar o nome de Peniel .
31 The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
31 O sol nasceu quando Jacó estava saindo de Peniel, e ele ia mancando por causa do golpe que havia levado na coxa.
32 Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
32 Até hoje os descendentes de Israel não comem o músculo que fica na junta da coxa, pois foi nessa parte do corpo que ele recebeu o golpe.
