1 So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
1 Vi ainda todas as opressões praticadas debaixo do sol: vi as lágrimas dos que foram oprimidos, sem que ninguém os consolasse; vi a violência na mão dos opressores, sem que ninguém consolasse os oprimidos.
2 Wherefore I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive.
2 Por isso considero mais felizes os que já morreram, mais do que os que ainda vivem.
3 Yes, better is he than both they, who hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
3 Porém mais feliz do que uns e outros é aquele que ainda não nasceu e não viu as más obras que se fazem debaixo do sol.
4 Again, I considered all labor, and every right work, that for this a man is envied by his neighbor. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
4 Então vi que toda fadiga e toda habilidade no trabalho provêm da inveja do ser humano contra o seu próximo. Também isto é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
5 O tolo cruza os braços e destrói a si mesmo.
6 Better is a handful with quietness, than both the hands full with toil and vexation of spirit.
6 Melhor é um punhado de descanso do que ambas as mãos cheias de trabalho e correr atrás do vento.
7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
7 Então considerei outra vaidade debaixo do sol:
8 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yes, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labor; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labor, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yes, it is a grievous labor.
8 um homem sem ninguém, que não tem filhos nem irmãos, mas que não cessa de trabalhar e cujos olhos não se fartam de riquezas. E ele não pergunta: “Para quem estou trabalhando, se não aproveito as coisas boas da vida?” Também isto é vaidade e enfadonho trabalho.
9 Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labor.
9 Melhor é serem dois do que um, porque maior é o pagamento pelo seu trabalho.
10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him to rise.
10 Porque se caírem, um levanta o companheiro. Mas ai do que estiver só, pois, caindo, não haverá quem o levante.
11 Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
11 Também, se dois dormirem juntos, eles se aquecerão; mas, se for um sozinho, como se aquecerá?
12 And if one prevaileth against him, two shall withstand him; and a three-fold cord is not quickly broken.
12 Se alguém quiser dominar um deles, os dois poderão resistir; o cordão de três dobras não se rompe com facilidade.
13 Better is a poor and a wise child, than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
13 Melhor é o jovem pobre e sábio do que o rei velho e tolo, que já não se deixa admoestar.
14 For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
14 Porque ele saiu da prisão para reinar, embora tenha nascido pobre em seu reino.
15 I considered all the living who walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
15 Vi todos os viventes que andam debaixo do sol com o jovem sucessor, que ficará em lugar do rei.
16 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
16 Era sem conta todo o povo que ele dominava, mas os que virão depois não estarão contentes com ele. Na verdade, também isto é vaidade e correr atrás do vento.
17 \5:1\Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
