¹ E, no ano quinze do império de Tibério César, sendo Pôncio Pilatos governador da Judeia, e Herodes, tetrarca da Galileia, e seu irmão Filipe, tetrarca da Itureia e da província de Traconites, e Lisânias, tetrarca de Abilene,

² when Anna and Cayphas were the hye prestes: the worde of God came vnto Iohn ye sonne of zacharias in the wildernes.

² sendo Anás e Caifás sumos sacerdotes, veio no deserto a palavra de Deus a João, filho de Zacarias.

³ And he came in to all the coostes aboute Iordan preachynge the baptyme of repentaunce for the remission of synnes

³ E percorreu toda a terra ao redor do Jordão, pregando o batismo de arrependimento, para o perdão dos pecados,

⁴ at it is written in the boke of the sayinges of Esaias ye Prophet which sayeth: The voyce of a cryar in wyldernes prepare the waye of the Lorde make hys pathes strayght.

⁴ segundo o que está escrito no livro das palavras do profeta Isaías, que diz: Voz do que clama no deserto: Preparai o caminho do Senhor; endireitai as suas veredas.

⁵ Every valley shalbe fylled and every moutayne and hyll shalbe brought lowe. And crocked thinges shalbe made streight: and the rough wayes shalbe made smoth:

⁵ Todo vale se encherá, e se abaixará todo monte e outeiro; e o que é tortuoso se endireitará, e os caminhos escabrosos se aplanarão;

⁶ and all flesshe shall se the saveour sent of God.

⁶ e toda carne verá a salvação de Deus.

⁷ Then sayde he to the people that were come to be baptysed of him: O generacion of vipers who hath taught you to flye from the wrath to come?

⁷ Dizia, pois, João à multidão que saía para ser batizada por ele: Raça de víboras, quem vos ensinou a fugir da ira que está para vir?

⁸ Bringe forth due frutes of repentaunce and begynne not to saye in youre selves we have Abraham to oure father. For I saye vnto you: God is able of these stones to reyse vp chyldren vnto Abraham.

⁸ Produzi, pois, frutos dignos de arrependimento e não comeceis a dizer em vós mesmos: Temos Abraão por pai, porque eu vos digo que até destas pedras pode Deus suscitar filhos a Abraão.

⁹ Now also ys the axe leyd vnto the rote of the trees: so yt every tree which bringeth not forth good frute shalbe hewe doune and caste in to ye fyre.

⁹ E também já está posto o machado à raiz das árvores; toda árvore, pois, que não dá bom fruto é cortada e lançada no fogo.

¹⁰ And the people axed him sayinge: What shall we do then?

¹⁰ E a multidão o interrogava, dizendo: Que faremos, pois?

¹¹ He answered and sayde vnto them: He that hath two coottes let him parte with him that hath none: and he that hath meate let him do lyke wyse.

¹¹ E, respondendo ele, disse-lhes: Quem tiver duas túnicas, que reparta com o que não tem, e quem tiver alimentos, que faça da mesma maneira.

¹² Then came ther Publicans to be baptised and sayde vnto him: Master what shall we do?

¹² E chegaram também uns publicanos, para serem batizados, e disseram-lhe: Mestre, que devemos fazer?

¹³ And he sayde vnto the: requyre no more then that which ys appoynted vnto you.

¹³ E ele lhes disse: Não peçais mais do que aquilo que vos está ordenado.

¹⁴ The soudyoures lyke wyse demaunded of hym sayinge: and what shall we do? And he sayde to them: Do violence to noo ma: nether trouble eny man wrongfully: but be content with youre wages.

¹⁴ E uns soldados o interrogaram também, dizendo: E nós, que faremos? E ele lhes disse: A ninguém trateis mal, nem defraudeis e contentai-vos com o vosso soldo.

¹⁵ As the people were in a doute and all men disputed in their hertes of Iohn whether he were very Christ:

¹⁵ E, estando o povo em expectação e pensando todos de João, em seu coração, se, porventura, seria o Cristo,

¹⁶ Ihon answered and sayde to them all: I baptyse you wt water but a stronger then I cometh after me whose shue latchet I am not worthy to vnlouse: he will baptise you with the holy goost and with fyre:

¹⁶ respondeu João a todos, dizendo: Eu, na verdade, batizo-vos com água, mas eis que vem aquele que é mais poderoso do que eu, a quem eu não sou digno de desatar a correia das sandálias; este vos batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo.

¹⁷ which hath his fanne in his hond and will pourge his floore and will gader the corne into his barne: but the chaffe wyll he bourne with fyre that never shalbe quenched.

¹⁷ Ele tem a pá na sua mão, e limpará a sua eira, e ajuntará o trigo no seu celeiro, mas queimará a palha com fogo que nunca se apaga.

¹⁸ And many other thinges in his exhortacion preached he vnto the people.

¹⁸ E assim admoestando-os, muitas outras coisas também anunciava ao povo.

¹⁹ Then Herode the Tetrach (when he was rebuked of him for Herodias his brother Philippes wyfe and for all the evyls which Herod had done)

¹⁹ Sendo, porém, o tetrarca Herodes repreendido por ele por causa de Herodias, mulher de seu irmão Filipe, e por todas as maldades que Herodes tinha feito,

²⁰ added this above all and leyd Iohn in preson.

²⁰ acrescentou a todas as outras ainda esta, a de encerrar João num cárcere.

²¹ And yt fortuned as all the people receaved baptyme (and when Iesus was baptised and dyd praye) that heave was opened

²¹ E aconteceu que, como todo o povo se batizava, sendo batizado também Jesus, orando ele, o céu se abriu,

²² and the holy goost came doune in a bodely shape lyke a dove vpo him and a voyce came fro heve sayinge: Thou arte my dere sonne in the do I delyte.

²² e o Espírito Santo desceu sobre ele em forma corpórea, como uma pomba; e ouviu-se uma voz do céu, que dizia: Tu és meu Filho amado; em ti me tenho comprazido.

²³ And Iesus him silfe was about thirty yere of age when he begane beinge as men supposed the sonne of Ioseph. which Ioseph was the sonne of Heli

²³ E o mesmo Jesus começava a ser de quase trinta anos, sendo (como se cuidava) filho de José, e José, de Eli,

²⁴ which was the sonne of Mathat which was the sonne of Levi: which was the sonne of Melchi: which was the sonne of Ianna: which was the sonne of Ioseph:
