1 But, in these days, the disciples, multiplying, there arose a murmuring of the Grecian Jews against the Hebrews, in that, their widows, were being overlooked in the daily ministry.
1 Naqueles dias, como crescesse o número dos discípulos, houve queixas dos gregos contra os hebreus, porque as suas viúvas teriam sido negligenciadas na distribuição diária.
2 And the Twelve, calling near the throng of the disciples, said—It doth not seem, right, that, we, forsaking the word of God, should be ministering unto tables.
2 Por isso, os Doze convocaram uma reunião dos discípulos e disseram: Não é razoável que abandonemos a palavra de Deus, para administrar.
3 But look out for yourselves, brethren, seven men from among you, who can be well-attested, full of Spirit and wisdom,—whom we will appoint over this need;
3 Portanto, irmãos, escolhei dentre vós sete homens de boa reputação, cheios do Espírito Santo e de sabedoria, aos quais encarregaremos este ofício.
4 But, we, unto prayer and unto the ministry of the word, will give constant attention.
4 Nós atenderemos sem cessar à oração e ao ministério da palavra.
5 And the word was pleasing in the sight of all the throng; and they selected Stephen, a man full of faith and Holy Spirit, and Philip and Prochorus and Nicanor and Timon and Parmenas and Nicholaus, a proselyte of Antioch;
5 Este parecer agradou a toda a reunião. Escolheram Estêvão, homem cheio de fé e do Espírito Santo; Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timão, Pármenas e Nicolau, prosélito de Antioquia.
6 Whom they set before the Apostles, and, praying, they laid upon them their hands.
6 Apresentaram-nos aos apóstolos, e estes, orando, impuseram-lhes as mãos.
7 And, the word of God, went on growing, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem continued to multiply exceedingly; a great multitude of the priests also, were becoming obedient unto the faith.
7 Divulgou-se sempre mais a palavra de Deus. Multiplicava-se consideravelmente o número dos discípulos em Jerusalém. Também grande número de sacerdotes aderia à fé.
8 Now, Stephen, full of favour and power, began to do great wonders and signs among the people.
8 Estêvão, cheio de graça e fortaleza, fazia grandes milagres e prodígios entre o povo.
9 But there rose up certain of those out of the synagogue which is called [the synagogue] of them of Libertium and Cyrene and Alexandria, and certain of them from Cilicia and Asia,—disputing with Stephen;
9 Mas alguns da sinagoga, chamada dos Libertos, dos cirenenses, dos alexandrinos e dos que eram da Cilícia e da Ásia, levantaram-se para disputar com ele.
10 And they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking,
10 Não podiam, porém, resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito que o inspirava.
11 Then, they set on men who were saying—We have heard him speaking profane things against Moses and God.
11 Então subornaram alguns indivíduos para que dissessem que o tinham ouvido proferir palavras de blasfêmia contra Moisés e contra Deus.
12 And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes; and, coming upon him, they caught him away, and led him into the high-council.
12 Amotinaram assim o povo, os anciãos e os escribas e, investindo contra ele, agarraram-no e o levaram ao Grande Conselho.
13 And they set up false witnesses, who said—This man, ceaseth not speaking things against this holy place and the law;
13 Apresentaram falsas testemunhas que diziam: Esse homem não cessa de proferir palavras contra o lugar santo e contra a lei.
14 For we have heard him saying—This Jesus the Nazarene, will overthrow this place, and will change the customs which, Moses, delivered unto us.
14 Nós o ouvimos dizer que Jesus de Nazaré há de destruir este lugar e há de mudar as tradições que Moisés nos legou.
15 And, looking steadfastly at him, all they who were sitting in the high-council, saw his face, as if the face of a messenger;
15 Fixando nele os olhos, todos os membros do Grande Conselho viram o seu rosto semelhante ao de um anjo.
