1 About this time, when the number of the disciples was constantly increasing, complaints were made by the Greek speaking Jews against the Aramaic speaking Jews, that their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution.
1 Naqueles dias, crescendo o número de discípulos, os judeus de fala grega entre eles queixaram-se dos judeus de fala hebraica, porque suas viúvas estavam sendo esquecidas na distribuição diária de alimento.
2 The Twelve, therefore, called together the general body of the disciples and said to them: “It is not well for us to see to the distribution at the tables and neglect God’s message.
2 Por isso os Doze reuniram todos os discípulos e disseram: "Não é certo negligenciarmos o ministério da palavra de Deus, a fim de servir às mesas.
3 Therefore, friends, look for seven men of reputation among yourselves, wise and spiritually-minded men, and we will appoint them to attend to this matter;
3 Irmãos, escolham entre vocês sete homens de bom testemunho, cheios do Espírito e de sabedoria. Passaremos a eles essa tarefa
4 while we, for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer, and to the delivery of the message.”
4 e nos dedicaremos à oração e ao ministério da palavra".
5 This proposal was unanimously agreed to; and the disciples chose Stephen — a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit — and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a former convert to Judaism;
5 Tal proposta agradou a todos. Então escolheram Estêvão, homem cheio de fé e do Espírito Santo, além de Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timom, Pármenas e Nicolau, um convertido ao judaísmo, proveniente de Antioquia.
6 and they brought these men to the apostles, who, after praying, placed their hands on them.
6 Apresentaram esses homens aos apóstolos, os quais oraram e lhes impuseram as mãos.
7 So God’s message spread, and the number of the disciples continued to increase rapidly in Jerusalem, and a large body of the priests accepted the faith.
7 Assim, a palavra de Deus se espalhava. Crescia rapidamente o número de discípulos em Jerusalém; também um grande número de sacerdotes obedecia à fé.
8 Meanwhile Stephen, divinely helped and strengthened, was showing great wonders and signs among the people.
8 Estêvão, homem cheio da graça e do poder de Deus, realizava grandes maravilhas e sinais entre o povo.
9 But some members of the Synagogue of the Freed Slaves (as it was called), Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and Visitors from Cilicia and Roman Asia, were roused to action and began disputing with Stephen;
9 Contudo, levantou-se oposição dos membros da chamada Sinagoga dos Libertos, dos judeus de Cirene e de Alexandria, bem como das províncias da Cilícia e da Ásia. Esses homens começaram a discutir com Estêvão,
10 yet they were quite unable to withstand the wisdom and the inspiration with which he spoke.
10 mas não podiam resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito com que ele falava.
11 Then they induced some men to assert that they had heard Stephen saying blasphemous things against Moses, and against God;
11 Então subornaram alguns homens para dizerem: "Ouvimos Estêvão falar palavras blasfemas contra Moisés e contra Deus".
12 and they stirred up the people, as well as the councillors and the teachers of the law, and set on Stephen, and arrested him, and brought him before the High Council.
12 Com isso agitaram o povo, os líderes religiosos e os mestres da lei. E, prendendo Estêvão, levaram-no ao Sinédrio.
13 There they produced witnesses who gave false evidence. “This man,” they said, “is incessantly saying things against this Holy place and the law;
13 Ali apresentaram falsas testemunhas que diziam: "Este homem não pára de falar contra este lugar santo e contra a lei.
14 indeed, we have heard him declare that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and change the customs handed down to us by Moses.”
14 Pois o ouvimos dizer que esse Jesus, o Nazareno, destruirá este lugar e mudará os costumes que Moisés nos legou".
15 The eyes of all the members of the Council were riveted on Stephen, and they saw his face looking like the face of an angel.
15 Olhando para ele, todos os que estavam sentados no Sinédrio viram que o seu rosto parecia o rosto de um anjo.
