1 Three days after Festus had arrived in his province, he left Caesarea and went up to Jerusalem.
1 Três dias depois de chegar à província, Festo subiu de Cesaréia para Jerusalém,
2 There the chief priests and the leading men among the Jews laid an information before him against Paul,
2 onde os chefes dos sacerdotes e os judeus mais importantes compareceram diante dele, apresentando as acusações contra Paulo.
3 and asked a favor of him, to Paul’s injury — to have Paul brought to Jerusalem. All the while they were plotting to make away with him on the road.
3 Pediram a Festo o favor de transferir Paulo para Jerusalém, contra os interesses do próprio Paulo, pois estavam preparando uma emboscada para matá-lo no caminho.
4 But Festus answered that Paul was in prison at Caesarea, and that he himself would be leaving for that place shortly.
4 Festo respondeu: "Paulo está preso em Cesaréia, e eu mesmo vou para lá em breve.
5 “So let the influential men among you,” he said, “go down with me, and if there is anything amiss in the man, charge him formally with it.”
5 Desçam comigo alguns dos seus líderes e apresentem ali as acusações que têm contra esse homem, se realmente ele fez algo de errado".
6 After staying among them some eight or ten days, Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he took his seat on the Bench, and ordered Paul to be brought before him.
6 Tendo passado com eles oito a dez dias, desceu para Cesaréia e, no dia seguinte, convocou o tribunal e ordenou que Paulo fosse trazido perante ele.
7 On Paul’s appearance, the Jewish leaders who had come down from Jerusalem surrounded him, and made many serious charges, which they failed to establish.
7 Quando Paulo apareceu, os judeus que tinham chegado de Jerusalém se aglomeraram ao seu redor, fazendo contra ele muitas e graves acusações que não podiam provar.
8 Paul’s answer to the charge was — ‘I have not committed any offense against the Jewish law, or the Temple, or the Emperor.’
8 Então Paulo fez sua defesa: "Nada fiz de errado contra a lei dos judeus, contra o templo ou contra César".
9 But, as Festus wished to gain popularity with the Jews, he interrupted Paul with the question: “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and be tried on these charges before me there?”
9 Festo, querendo prestar um favor aos judeus, perguntou a Paulo: "Você está disposto a ir a Jerusalém e ali ser julgado diante de mim, acerca destas acusações? "
10 “No,” replied Paul, “I am standing at the Emperor’s court, where I ought to be tried. I have not wronged the Jews, as you yourself are well aware.
10 Paulo respondeu: "Estou agora diante do tribunal de César, onde devo ser julgado. Não fiz nenhum mal aos judeus, como bem sabes.
11 If, however, I am breaking the law and have committed any offense deserving death, I do not ask to escape the penalty; but, if there is nothing in the accusations of these people, no one has the power to give me up to them. I appeal to the Emperor.”
11 Se, de fato, sou culpado de ter feito algo que mereça pena de morte, não me recuso a morrer. Mas se as acusações feitas contra mim por estes judeus não são verdadeiras, ninguém tem o direito de me entregar a eles. Apelo para César! "
12 Festus, after conferring with his Council, answered: “You have appealed to the Emperor; to the Emperor you will go.”
12 Depois de ter consultado seus conselheiros, Festo declarou: "Você apelou para César, para César irá! "
13 Some days later King Agrippa and Bernice came down to Caesarea, and paid a visit of congratulation to Festus;
13 Alguns dias depois, o rei Agripa e Berenice chegaram a Cesaréia para saudar Festo.
14 and, as they were staying there for several days, Festus laid Paul’s case before the king. “There is a man here,” he said, “left a prisoner by Felix,
14 Visto que estavam passando muitos dias ali, Festo explicou o caso de Paulo ao rei: "Há aqui um homem que Félix deixou preso.
15 about whom, when I came to Jerusalem, the Jewish chief priest and the councillors laid an information, demanding judgment against him.
15 Quando fui a Jerusalém, os chefes dos sacerdotes e os líderes dos judeus fizeram acusações contra ele, pedindo que fosse condenado.
16 My answer to them was, that it was not the practice of Romans to give up anyone to their accusers until the accused had met them face to face, and had also had an opportunity of answering the charges brought against them.
16 "Eu lhes disse que não é costume romano condenar ninguém antes que ele se defronte pessoalmente com seus acusadores e tenha a oportunidade de se defender das acusações que lhe fazem.
17 So they met here, and without loss of time I took my seat on the Bench the very next day, and ordered the man to be brought before me.
17 Vindo eles comigo para cá, não retardei o caso; convoquei o tribunal no dia seguinte e ordenei que o homem fosse apresentado.
18 But, when his accusers came forward, they brought no charge of wrong-doing such as I had expected;
18 Quando os seus acusadores se levantaram para falar, não o acusaram de nenhum dos crimes que eu esperava.
19 but I found that there were certain questions in dispute between them about their own religion, and about some dead man called Jesus, whom Paul declared to be alive.
19 Pelo contrário, tinham alguns pontos de divergência com ele acerca de sua própria religião e de um certo Jesus, já morto, o qual Paulo insiste que está vivo.
20 And, as I was at a loss how to enquire into questions of this kind, I asked Paul if he were willing to go up to Jerusalem, and be put on trial there.
20 Fiquei sem saber como investigar tais assuntos; por isso perguntei-lhe se ele estaria disposto a ir a Jerusalém e ser julgado ali acerca destas acusações.
21 Paul, however, appealed to have his case reserved for the consideration of his August Majesty, so I ordered him to be detained in custody, until I could send him to the Emperor.”
21 Apelando Paulo para que fosse guardado até a decisão do Imperador, ordenei que ficasse sob custódia até que eu pudesse enviá-lo a César".
22 “I should like to hear this man myself,” Agrippa said to Festus. “You will hear him tomorrow,” Festus answered.
22 Então Agripa disse a Festo: "Eu também gostaria de ouvir esse homem". Ele respondeu: "Amanhã o ouvirás".
23 So the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had come in full state and had entered the Audience Chamber, with the superior officers and the principal people of the city, by the order of Festus Paul was brought before them.
23 No dia seguinte, Agripa e Berenice vieram com grande pompa e entraram na sala de audiências com os altos oficiais e os homens importantes da cidade. Por ordem de Festo, Paulo foi trazido.
24 Then Festus said: “King Agrippa, and all here present, you see before you the man about whom the whole Jewish people have applied to me, both at Jerusalem and here, loudly asserting that he ought not to be allowed to live.
24 Então Festo disse: "Ó rei Agripa e todos os senhores aqui presentes conosco, vejam este homem! Toda a comunidade judaica me fez petições a respeito dele em Jerusalém e aqui em Cesaréia, gritando que ele não deveria mais viver.
25 I found, however, that he had not done anything deserving death; so, as he had himself appealed to his August Majesty, I decided to send him.
25 Mas verifiquei que ele nada fez que mereça pena de morte; todavia, porque apelou para o Imperador, decidi enviá-lo a Roma.
26 But I have nothing definite to write about him to my Imperial Master; and for that reason I have brought him before you all, and especially before you, King Agrippa, that, after examining him, I may have something to write.
26 No entanto, não tenho nada definido a respeito dele para escrever a Sua Majestade. Por isso, eu o trouxe diante dos senhores, e especialmente diante de ti, rei Agripa, de forma que, feita esta investigação, eu tenha algo para escrever.
27 For it seems to me absurd to send a prisoner, without at the same time stating the charges made against him.”
27 Pois não me parece razoável enviar um preso sem especificar as acusações contra ele".
