1 Paul fixed his eyes on the Council, and began: “Brothers, for my part, I have always ordered my life before God, with a clear conscience, up to this very day.”
1 Paulo, fixando os olhos no Sinédrio, disse: — Meus irmãos, tenho vivido até o dia de hoje com a consciência limpa diante de Deus.
2 At this, the high priest Ananias ordered the men standing near to strike him on the mouth;
2 Mas Ananias, o sumo sacerdote, mandou aos que estavam perto de Paulo que lhe batessem na boca.
3 Paul turned to him and said: “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Are you sitting there to try me in accordance with law, and yet, in defiance of law, order me to be struck?”
3 Então Paulo lhe disse: — Deus há de ferir você, parede branqueada! Você está aí sentado para me julgar de acordo com a Lei e, contra a Lei, ordena que eu seja agredido?
4 The people standing near said to Paul: “Do you know that you are insulting God’s high priest?”
4 Os que estavam ali perguntaram a Paulo: — Você está insultando o sumo sacerdote de Deus?
5 “I did not know, brothers, that it was the high priest,” said Paul, “for scripture says — ‘Of the Ruler of your people you should speak no ill’.”
5 Paulo respondeu: — Eu não sabia, irmãos, que ele é sumo sacerdote. Porque está escrito: “Não fale mal de uma autoridade do seu povo.”
6 Noticing that some of those present were Sadducees and others Pharisees, Paul called out in the Council: “Brothers, I am a Pharisee and a son of Pharisees. It is on the question of hope for the dead and of their resurrection that I am on my trial.”
6 Como Paulo sabia que uma parte do Sinédrio se compunha de saduceus e outra, de fariseus, exclamou: — Irmãos, eu sou fariseu, filho de fariseus. Estou sendo julgado por causa da esperança e da ressurreição dos mortos!
7 As soon as he said this, a dispute arose between the Pharisees and the Sadducees; and there was a sharp division of opinion among those present.
7 Ditas estas palavras, começou uma grande discussão entre fariseus e saduceus, e o Sinédrio se dividiu.
8 (For Sadducees say there is no such thing as a resurrection, and that there is neither angel nor spirit, while Pharisees believe in both.)
8 Pois os saduceus dizem que não há ressurreição, nem anjo, nem espírito, ao passo que os fariseus admitem todas essas coisas.
9 So a great uproar ensued, and some of the Teaches of the law belonging to the Pharisees’ party stood up and hotly protested: “We find nothing whatever wrong in this man. Suppose a spirit did speak to him, or an angel...”
9 Houve, pois, muita gritaria no Sinédrio. E, levantando-se alguns escribas que eram do partido dos fariseus, discutiam, dizendo: — Não achamos neste homem mal algum. E se, de fato, algum espírito ou anjo falou com ele?
10 The dispute was becoming so violent, that the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces between them, ordered the Guard to go down and rescue him from them, and take him into the Fort.
10 Como a discussão ficava cada vez mais intensa, o comandante, temendo que Paulo fosse despedaçado por eles, mandou descer a guarda para que o retirassem dali e o levassem para a fortaleza.
11 That night the Lord came and stood by Paul, and said: “Courage! You have borne witness for me in Jerusalem and you must bear witness in Rome also.”
11 Na noite seguinte, o Senhor, pondo-se ao lado de Paulo, disse:
12 In the morning some Jewish men combined together, and took an oath that they would not eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
12 Quando amanheceu, os judeus se reuniram e juraram que não haviam de comer, nem beber, enquanto não matassem Paulo.
13 There were more than forty in the plot;
13 Eram mais de quarenta os que se envolveram nessa conspiração.
14 and they went to the chief priests and the councillors, and said: “We have taken a solemn oath not to touch food until we have killed Paul.
14 Estes foram falar com os principais sacerdotes e os anciãos e disseram: — Juramos, sob pena de maldição, não comer coisa alguma, enquanto não matarmos Paulo.
15 So we want you now, with the consent of the Council, to suggest to the commanding officer that he should bring Paul down before you, as though you intended to go more fully into his case; but, before he comes here, we will be ready to make away with him.”
15 Por isso, agora, juntamente com o Sinédrio, mandem um recado ao comandante para que ele o apresente a vocês, sob o pretexto de que desejam investigar mais acuradamente o caso dele; e nós, antes que ele chegue, estaremos prontos para matá-lo.
16 However, the son of Paul’s sister, hearing of the plot, went to the Fort, and on being admitted, told Paul about it.
16 Mas o filho da irmã de Paulo, tendo ouvido a respeito da trama, foi, entrou na fortaleza e contou tudo a Paulo.
17 Paul called one of the Captains of the garrison and asked him to take the lad to the commanding officer, as he had something to tell him.
17 Então este, chamando um dos centuriões, disse: — Leve este rapaz ao comandante, porque tem algo a dizer.
18 The captain went with the lad to the commanding officer, and said: “The prisoner Paul called me and asked me to bring this lad to you, as he has something to tell you.”
18 O centurião levou o rapaz ao comandante e disse: — O prisioneiro Paulo me chamou e pediu que eu trouxesse à sua presença este rapaz, pois tem algo a dizer ao senhor.
19 The commanding officer took the lad by the hand, and, stepping aside, asked what it was he had to tell him.
19 O comandante pegou o rapaz pela mão e, levando-o para um lado, perguntou-lhe: — O que você tem para me dizer?
20 “Some men have agreed,” answered the lad, “to ask you to bring Paul down before the Council tomorrow, on the plea of your making further inquiry into his case.
20 Ele respondeu: — Os judeus decidiram pedir ao senhor que, amanhã, apresente Paulo ao Sinédrio, sob o pretexto de que desejam fazer uma investigação mais acurada a respeito dele.
21 But do not let them persuade you, for more than forty of them are lying in wait for him, who have taken an oath that they will not eat or drink, until they have made away with him; and they are at this very moment in readiness, counting on your promise.”
21 Não se deixe persuadir, porque mais de quarenta deles armaram uma emboscada. Fizeram um pacto de, sob pena de maldição, não comer, nem beber, enquanto não matarem Paulo; e agora estão prontos, esperando que o senhor prometa atender o pedido deles.
22 The commanding officer then dismissed the lad, cautioning him not to mention to anybody that he had given him that information.
22 Então o comandante despediu o rapaz, recomendando-lhe que não dissesse a ninguém ter lhe trazido estas informações.
23 Then he called two Captains, and ordered them to have two hundred soldiers ready to go to Caesarea, as well as seventy troopers and two hundred lancers, by nine o’clock that night,
23 Chamando dois centuriões, ordenou: — Tenham de prontidão duzentos soldados, setenta cavaleiros e duzentos lanceiros para irem até Cesareia a partir das nove horas da noite.
24 and to have horses ready for Paul to ride, so that they might take him safely to Felix, the Governor.
24 Preparem também animais para fazer Paulo montar e levem-no com segurança ao governador Félix.
25 He also wrote a letter along these lines:
25 O comandante escreveu uma carta nestes termos:
26 ‘Claudius Lysias sends his compliments to His Excellency Felix the Governor.
26 “Cláudio Lísias ao excelentíssimo governador Félix. Saudações.
27 The man whom I send with this had been seized by some Jews, and was on the point of being killed by them, when I came upon them with the force under my command, and rescued him, as I learned that he was a Roman citizen.
27 Este homem foi preso pelos judeus e estava prestes a ser morto por eles, quando eu, sobrevindo com a guarda, o livrei, por saber que ele era romano.
28 Wanting to know exactly the ground of the charges they made against him, I brought him before their Council,
28 Querendo certificar-me do motivo por que o acusavam, levei-o ao Sinédrio deles.
29 when I found that their charges were connected with questions of their own law, and that there was nothing alleged involving either death or imprisonment.
29 Descobri que ele era acusado de coisas referentes à lei que os rege, mas nada que justificasse morte ou mesmo prisão.
30 Having, however, information of a plot against the man, which was about to be put into execution, I am sending him to you at once, and I have also directed his accusers to prosecute him before you.’
30 Sendo eu informado de que ia haver uma emboscada contra o homem, tratei de enviá-lo imediatamente ao senhor, intimando também os acusadores a irem dizer, na sua presença, o que eles têm contra ele. Passe bem.”
31 The soldiers, in accordance with their orders, took charge of Paul and conducted him by night to Antipatris;
31 Então os soldados, conforme lhes foi ordenado, pegaram Paulo e, durante a noite, o conduziram até Antipátride.
32 and on the next day, leaving the troopers to go on with him, they returned to the Fort.
32 No dia seguinte, voltaram para a fortaleza, tendo deixado os cavaleiros encarregados de seguir viagem com ele.
33 On arriving at Caesarea, the troopers delivered the letter to the Governor, and brought Paul before him.
33 Quando estes chegaram a Cesareia, entregaram a carta ao governador e também lhe apresentaram Paulo.
34 As soon as Felix had read the letter, he enquired to what province Paul belonged, and, learning that he came from Cilicia, he said:
34 Lida a carta, o governador perguntou de que província Paulo era. E, quando soube que era da Cilícia,
35 “I will hear all you have to say as soon as your accusers have arrived.” And he ordered Paul to be kept under guard in Herod’s Government house.
35 disse: — Ouvirei você quando chegarem os seus acusadores. E mandou que ele ficasse preso no Pretório de Herodes.
