1 And Sarai, Abram's wife, did not bear to him; and to her belonged a female slave, an Egyptian, and her name was Hagar.
1 Sarai, mulher de Abrão, não havia conseguido lhe dar filhos. Tinha, porém, uma serva egípcia chamada Hagar.
2 And Sarai said to Abram, See, now, Jehovah has kept me from bearing; go in now to my slave-girl; perhaps I may be built up from her. And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
2 Sarai disse a Abrão: “O S enhor me impediu de ter filhos. Vá e deite-se com minha serva. Talvez, por meio dela, eu consiga ter uma família”. Abrão aceitou a proposta de Sarai.
3 And Sarai, Abram's wife, took her slave-girl, Hagar, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan.
3 Então Sarai, mulher de Abrão, tomou Hagar, a serva egípcia, e a entregou a Abrão como mulher. (Isso aconteceu dez anos depois que Abrão havia se estabelecido na terra de Canaã.)
4 And he went in to Hagar and she conceived; and she saw that she had conceived, and her mistress was despised in her eyes.
4 Abrão teve relações com Hagar, e ela engravidou. Quando Hagar soube que estava grávida, começou a tratar Sarai, sua senhora, com desprezo.
5 And Sarai said to Abram, My injury be upon you; I gave my slave-girl into your bosom, and she saw that she had conceived, and I was despised in her eyes. Let Jehovah judge between me and you.
5 Então Sarai disse a Abrão: “Você é o culpado da vergonha que estou passando! Entreguei minha serva a você, mas, agora que engravidou, ela me trata com desprezo. O S enhor mostrará quem está errado: você ou eu!”.
6 But Abram said to Sarai, See, your slave girl is in your hand. Do to her what is good in your eyes. And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from before her.
6 Abrão respondeu: “Hagar é sua serva. Faça com ela o que lhe parecer melhor”. Então Sarai a tratou tão mal que, por fim, Hagar fugiu.
7 And the Angel of Jehovah found her by a well of water in the wilderness; by the well in the way of Shur.
7 O anjo do S enhor encontrou Hagar no deserto, perto de uma fonte de água junto à estrada para Sur,
8 And He said, Hagar, Sarai's slave-girl, where did you come from? And where do you go? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress, Sarai.
8 e perguntou: “Hagar, serva de Sarai, de onde você vem e para onde vai?”. “Estou fugindo de minha senhora, Sarai”, respondeu ela.
9 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Return to your mistress and submit yourself under her hand.
9 Então o anjo do S enhor disse: “Volte para sua senhora e sujeite-se à autoridade dela”.
10 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, I will exceedingly multiply your seed, so that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
10 E acrescentou: “Eu lhe darei tantos descendentes que será impossível contá-los”.
11 And the Angel of Jehovah said to her, Behold! You are with child and shall bear a son; and you shall call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah has attended to your affliction.
11 O anjo do S enhor também disse: “Você está grávida e dará à luz um filho. Dê a ele o nome de Ismael, pois o S enhor ouviu seu clamor angustiado.
12 And he shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against all, and the hand of everyone against him; and he shall live before all his brothers.
12 Seu filho será um homem solitário e indomável, como um jumento selvagem. Levantará o punho contra todos, e todos serão contra ele. Sim, ele viverá em franca oposição a todos os seus parentes”.
13 And she called the name of Jehovah, the One speaking to her, You, a God of vision! For she said, Even here I have looked after the One seeing me?
13 Então Hagar passou a usar outro nome para se referir ao S enhor , que havia falado com ela. Chamou-o de “Tu és o Deus que me vê”, pois tinha dito: “Aqui eu vi aquele que me vê!”.
14 On account of this, the well was called, The Well of the Living One Seeing Me. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
14 Por isso, aquela fonte que fica entre Cades e Berede recebeu o nome de Beer-Laai-Roi.
15 And Hagar bore a son to Abram, and Abram called the name of his son whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
15 Assim, Hagar deu um filho a Abrão, e Abrão o chamou de Ismael.
16 And Abram was eighty six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
16 Quando Ismael nasceu, Abrão tinha 86 anos.
