1 Now it happened when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he became angry and greatly provoked, and he mocked the Jews.
1 Quando Sambalate ouviu que nós estávamos reconstruindo a muralha, ficou irado e indignado, e começou a zombar dos judeus.
2 Then he said before his brothers and the army of Samaria, “What are the feeble Jews doing? Will they restore these things for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the piles of rubble—even those burned up?”
2 Na presença de seus irmãos e do exército de Samaria ele disse: — O que é que esses judeus fracos estão fazendo? Vocês vão permitir que eles continuem? Será que vão oferecer sacrifícios? Pensam que podem acabar a obra num só dia? Será que as pedras que foram queimadas poderão renascer daqueles montões de pó?
3 Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him and said, “Their wall of stone that they are building would break down if a fox went on it!”
3 Tobias, o amonita, estava com Sambalate e disse: — Mesmo que reconstruam, se vier uma raposa, derrubará aquela muralha de pedras!
4 Hear, our God, for we are despised. Turn their scorn on their head and give them over to plunder in the land of captivity.
4 “Ouve, ó nosso Deus, pois estamos sendo desprezados. Faze com que o seu desprezo recaia sobre a cabeça deles, e faze com que sejam despojo numa terra de cativeiro.
5 Do not cover their guilt, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before you. They have ⌞provoked the builders to anger⌟.
5 Não encubras a sua iniquidade, e que o pecado deles não seja apagado diante de ti, pois te provocaram à ira na presença dos construtores.”
6 So we rebuilt the wall, and all of the wall was joined up to half its height. For the people had a heart to do it.
6 Assim, reconstruímos a muralha. E toda a muralha foi acabada até a metade da sua altura, porque o povo tinha ânimo para trabalhar.
7 Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem were going forward and the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.
7 Mas, quando Sambalate, Tobias, os árabes, os amonitas e os asdoditas ouviram que a reparação das muralhas de Jerusalém ia adiante e que já se começavam a fechar-lhe as brechas, ficaram muito irados.
8 So all of them plotted together to come fight against Jerusalem and to make trouble for it.
8 Todos se ajuntaram de comum acordo para virem atacar Jerusalém e criar confusão ali.
9 So we prayed to our God and set up a guard against them day and night.
9 Porém nós oramos ao nosso Deus e, como proteção, pusemos guarda contra eles, de dia e de noite.
10 But Judah said, “The strength of the carriers is failing, and there is too much dirt, and we are not able to build at the wall.”
10 Então os que estavam em Judá disseram: — Os carregadores já não têm mais forças, e os escombros são muitos. Nós mesmos não seremos capazes de reconstruir a muralha.
11 Then our enemies said, “They will not know nor see until we come upon them and will kill them and stop the work.”
11 Os nossos inimigos diziam entre si: “Eles não ficarão sabendo nem verão nada, até que entremos no meio deles e os matemos. E assim vamos fazer com que a obra pare.”
12 When the Jews who lived beside them came, they said to us ten times, “From all of the places where they live, they will come up against us.”
12 Os judeus que habitavam na vizinhança deles nos disseram dez vezes: “De todos os lugares onde moram, eles nos atacarão.”
13 I stationed the people behind the deepest part of the wall in the open places according to their families, with their swords, spears, and bows.
13 Então pus o povo, por famílias, nos lugares baixos e abertos, por detrás da muralha, com as suas espadas, as suas lanças e os seus arcos.
14 And I looked, got up, and said to the nobles, prefects, and the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”
14 Depois de fazer uma inspeção, levantei-me e disse aos nobres, aos magistrados e ao resto do povo: — Não tenham medo deles. Lembrem-se do Senhor, grande e temível, e lutem pelos seus irmãos, seus filhos, suas filhas, pelas mulheres e pela casa de vocês.
15 It happened when our enemies heard that their plan was known to us, that God had frustrated it, and we all returned to the wall—each to his work.
15 Quando os nossos inimigos ouviram que nós já sabíamos disso e que Deus tinha frustrado o plano deles, voltamos todos nós para a muralha, cada um à sua obra.
16 From that day, half of my servants were working on craftsmanship, half were holding spears, small shields, bows, and breastplates. The commanders were behind the whole house of Judah.
16 Daquele dia em diante, metade dos meus homens trabalhava na obra, e a outra metade empunhava lanças, escudos, arcos e couraças; e os chefes estavam por trás de toda a casa de Judá
17 The ones who were building the wall and the ones ⌞who carried the materials⌟ were carrying in one hand while doing the task, and with the other hand were grasping a weapon.
17 que reconstruía a muralha. Os carregadores, que por si mesmos tomavam as cargas, cada um com uma das mãos fazia a obra e com a outra segurava a arma.
18 Each of the builders had his sword tied to his side while building. And the man who sounded the trumpet was beside me.
18 Os construtores, cada um trazia a sua espada na cintura, enquanto construíam. O que tocava a trombeta estava ao meu lado.
19 I said to the nobles, to the prefects, and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and widespread, and we are spread out over the wall far from each other.
19 Eu disse aos nobres, aos magistrados e ao resto do povo: — Grande e extensa é a obra, e nós estamos espalhados na muralha, longe uns dos outros.
20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, come together to us there. Our God will fight for us.”
20 No lugar em que ouvirem o som da trombeta, ali reúnam-se em volta de nós. O nosso Deus lutará por nós.
21 So we labored at the work, and half of them were holding the spears from dawn until the stars came out.
21 Assim trabalhávamos na obra; e metade empunhava as lanças desde o raiar do dia até o anoitecer.
22 At the time I also said to the people, “Let each man and his servant spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that they will be a guard for us in the night and work in the day.”
22 Também nesse mesmo tempo eu disse ao povo: — Cada um de vocês fique em Jerusalém com o seu servo, para que de noite nos sirvam de guarda e de dia trabalhem.
23 So neither I nor my brothers nor my young men nor the men of the guard who were behind me took off our clothes. Each one kept his weapon even in the water.
23 Nem eu, nem os meus irmãos, nem os meus servos, nem os homens da guarda que me seguiam tirávamos as nossas roupas, nem mesmo para dormir; cada um se deitava com as armas à sua direita.
