1 And the word of Yahweh came to Jonah a second time, saying,
1 Pela segunda vez, o Senhor Deus disse a Jonas:
2 “Get up! Go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim to it the message that I am telling you.”
2 — Apronte-se, vá à grande cidade de Nínive e anuncie ao povo de lá a mensagem que eu vou dar a você.
3 So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh according to the word of Yahweh. Now Nineveh was ⌞an extraordinarily great city⌟—a journey of three days across.
3 Jonas se aprontou e foi a Nínive, como o Senhor Deus havia ordenado. Nínive era tão grande, que uma pessoa levava três dias para atravessá-la a pé.
4 And Jonah began to go into the city a journey of one day, and he cried out and said, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be demolished!”
4 Jonas entrou na cidade, andou um dia inteiro e então começou a anunciar: — Dentro de quarenta dias, Nínive será destruída!
5 And the people of Nineveh believed in God, and they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth—from the greatest of them ⌞to the least important⌟.
5 Então os moradores de Nínive creram em Deus e resolveram que cada um devia jejuar. E todos, desde os mais importantes até os mais humildes, vestiram roupa feita de pano grosseiro a fim de mostrar que estavam arrependidos.
6 And the news reached the king of Nineveh, and he rose from his throne and removed his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
6 Quando o rei de Nínive soube disso, levantou-se do trono, tirou o manto , vestiu uma roupa feita de pano grosseiro e sentou-se sobre cinzas.
7 And he had a proclamation made, and said, “In Nineveh, by a decree of the king and his nobles: “No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything! They must not eat, and they must not drink water!
7 Mandou também anunciar ao povo da cidade o seguinte: “Esta é uma ordem do rei e dos seus ministros. Ninguém pode comer nada. Todas as pessoas e também os animais, o gado e as ovelhas estão proibidos de comer e beber.
8 And the human beings and the animals must be covered with sackcloth! And they must call forcefully to God, and each must turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.
8 Que todas as pessoas e animais vistam roupas feitas de pano grosseiro! Que cada pessoa ore a Deus com fervor e abandone os seus maus caminhos e as suas maldades!
9 Who knows? God may relent and change his mind and turn ⌞from his blazing anger⌟ ⌞so that⌟ we will not perish.”
9 Talvez assim Deus mude de ideia. Talvez o seu furor passe, e assim não morreremos!”
10 And God saw their deeds—that they turned from their evil ways—and God changed his mind about the evil that he had said he would bring upon them, and he did not do it.
10 Deus viu o que eles fizeram e como abandonaram os seus maus caminhos. Então mudou de ideia e não castigou a cidade como tinha dito que faria.
