1 AND it came to pass, when Jesus had finished his injunctions to his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and preach in their cities.
1 Quando acabou de dar essas ordens aos seus doze discípulos, Jesus saiu daquele lugar e foi ensinar e anunciar a sua mensagem nas cidades que ficavam perto dali.
2 Then John, having heard in prison the works of Christ, sent two of his disciples,
2 João Batista estava na cadeia e, quando ouviu falar do que Cristo fazia, mandou que alguns dos seus discípulos
3 and said unto him, Art thou he that cometh, or should we expect another?
3 fossem perguntar a ele: — O senhor é aquele que ia chegar ou devemos esperar outro?
4 And Jesus answering said unto them, Go, and tell John what things ye hear and see.
4 Jesus respondeu:
5 The blind receive sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
5 Digam a ele que os cegos veem, os coxos andam, os leprosos são curados, os surdos ouvem, os mortos são ressuscitados, e os pobres recebem o
6 And blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended at me.
6 E felizes são aqueles que não abandonam a sua fé em mim!
7 And when they were gone, Jesus began to speak to the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
7 Quando os discípulos de João foram embora, Jesus começou a dizer ao povo o seguinte a respeito de João:
8 But what went ye out to see? A man clothed in delicate garments? Lo! they who wear delicate garments are in the houses of kings.
8 O que foram ver? Um homem bem-vestido? Ora, os que se vestem bem moram nos palácios!
9 Yet what went ye out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and abundantly more than a prophet.
9 Então me digam: o que esperavam ver? Um
10 For this is he of whom it is written, “Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.”
10 Porque João é aquele a respeito de quem as
11 Verily I say unto you, There hath not arisen, from those born of women, a greater than John the Baptist: yet he that is the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
11 Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: de todos os homens que já nasceram, João Batista é o maior. Porém quem é menor no
12 But from the days of John the Baptist unto the present, the kingdom of heaven is assaulted by violence, and the invaders forcibly seize upon it.
12 Desde os dias em que João anunciava a sua mensagem, até hoje, o Reino do Céu tem sido atacado com violência, e as pessoas violentas tentam conquistá-lo.
13 For all the prophets and the law until John, foretold this.
13 Até o tempo de João, todos os
14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias who was to come.
14 E, se vocês querem crer na mensagem deles, João é Elias, que estava para vir.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
15 Se vocês têm ouvidos para ouvir, então ouçam.
16 But to whom shall I resemble this generation? it is like little boys sitting in the places of concourse, and calling to their companions,
16 — Mas com quem posso comparar as pessoas de hoje? São como crianças sentadas na praça. Um grupo grita para o outro:
17 and saying, We have piped to you, and ye have not danced; we have sung mournful ditties to you, and ye have not beat your breasts.
17 “Nós tocamos músicas de casamento,
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil:
18 João Batista jejua e não bebe vinho, e todos dizem: “Ele está dominado por um demônio.”
19 the Son of man is come eating and drinking, and they say, Behold, what a man! a glutton and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners: though wisdom hath been justified by her children.
19 O
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities in which the chief of his miracles had been wrought, because they repented not:
20 Então Jesus começou a acusar as cidades onde tinha feito muitos milagres. Ele fez isso porque os seus moradores não haviam se arrependido dos seus pecados. Jesus disse:
21 Wo unto thee, Chorazin! wo unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the miracles which had been wrought in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, long since would they have repented in sack-cloth and ashes.
21 — Ai de você, cidade de Corazim! Ai de você, cidade de Betsaida! Porque, se os milagres que foram feitos em vocês tivessem sido feitos nas cidades de Tiro e de Sidom, os seus moradores já teriam abandonado os seus pecados há muito tempo. E, para mostrarem que estavam arrependidos, teriam vestido roupa feita de pano grosseiro e teriam jogado cinzas na cabeça!
22 Wherefore I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.
22 Pois eu afirmo a vocês que, no Dia do Juízo, Deus terá mais pena de Tiro e de Sidom do que de vocês, Corazim e Betsaida.
23 And thou, Capernaum, who hast been exalted unto heaven, shalt be cast down to hell: for if the miracles which have been wrought in thee had been done in Sodom, it had remained unto this day.
23 E você, cidade de Cafarnaum, acha que vai subir até o céu? Pois será jogada no
24 Wherefore I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for thee.
24 Pois eu afirmo a vocês que, no Dia do Juízo, Deus terá mais pena de Sodoma do que de você, Cafarnaum.
25 At that time Jesus spake and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and the intelligent, and hast revealed them to babes:
25 Naquela ocasião Jesus disse:
26 yes, Father! since such is thy good pleasure.
26 Sim, ó Pai, tu tiveste prazer em fazer isso.
27 All things are delivered up to me by my Father: and no person knoweth the Son but the Father; neither knoweth any person the Father but the Son, and he to whom the Son is pleased to reveal him.
27 — O meu Pai me deu todas as coisas. Ninguém sabe quem é o Filho, a não ser o Pai; e ninguém sabe quem é o Pai, a não ser o Filho e também aqueles a quem o Filho quiser mostrar quem o Pai é.
28 Come to me, all who labour hard, and sustain heavy burdens, and I will give you relief.
28 — Venham a mim, todos vocês que estão cansados de carregar as suas pesadas cargas, e eu lhes darei descanso.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest to your souls.
29 Sejam meus seguidores e aprendam comigo porque sou bondoso e tenho um coração humilde; e vocês encontrarão descanso.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
30 Os deveres que eu exijo de vocês são fáceis, e a carga que eu ponho sobre vocês é leve.
