1 Then, after these things were completed, the leaders came to me, saying: “The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, have not been separated from the peoples of the lands and from their abominations, especially those of the Canaanites, and Hittites, and Perizzites, and Jebusites, and Ammonites, and Moabites, and Egyptians, and Amorites.
1 Depois que foram feitas essas coisas, os líderes vieram dizer-me: "O povo de Israel, inclusive os sacerdotes e os levitas, não se mantiveram separados dos povos vizinhos e suas práticas repugnantes, como as dos cananeus, dos hititas, dos ferezeus, dos jebuseus, dos amonitas, dos moabitas, dos egípcios e dos amorreus.
2 For they have taken from their daughters for themselves and for their sons, and they have mixed a holy lineage with the peoples of the lands. And even the hand of the leaders and the magistrates has been first in this transgression.”
2 Eles e seus filhos se casaram com mulheres daqueles povos e com eles misturaram a descendência santa. E os líderes e os oficiais estão à frente nessa atitude infiel! "
3 And when I had heard this word, I tore my cloak and my tunic, and I pulled out the hairs of my head and beard, and I sat in mourning.
3 Quando ouvi isso, rasguei a minha túnica e o meu manto, arranquei os cabelos da cabeça e da barba e me sentei estarrecido!
4 Then all those who feared the word of the God of Israel gathered to me, because of the transgression of those who had arrived from the captivity. And I sat in sorrow, until the evening sacrifice.
4 Então todos os que tremiam diante das palavras do Deus de Israel reuniram-se ao meu redor por causa da infidelidade dos exilados. E eu fiquei sentado ali, estarrecido, até o sacrifício da tarde.
5 And at the evening sacrifice, I rose up from my affliction, and, having torn my cloak and my tunic, I fell to my knees, and I reached out my hands to the Lord, my God.
5 Então, na hora do sacrifício da tarde, eu saí do meu abatimento, com a túnica e o manto rasgados, e caí de joelhos com as mãos estendidas para o Senhor, para o meu Deus,
6 And I said: “My God, I am confounded and ashamed to lift up my face to you. For our iniquities have been multiplied over our heads, and our offenses have increased, even up to heaven,
6 e orei: Meu Deus, estou por demais envergonhado e humilhado para levantar o rosto diante de ti, meu Deus, porque os nossos pecados cobrem as nossas cabeças e a nossa culpa sobe até aos céus.
7 from the days of our fathers. But also, we ourselves have sinned gravely, even to this day. And for our iniquities, we ourselves, and our kings and our priests, have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the lands, and to the sword, and to captivity, and to plunder, and to confusion of face, just as it is also in this day.
7 Desde os dias dos nossos antepassados até agora, a nossa culpa tem sido grande. Por causa dos nossos pecados, nós, os nossos reis e os nossos sacerdotes temos sido entregues à espada e ao cativeiro, ao despojo e à humilhação nas mãos de reis estrangeiros, como acontece hoje.
8 And now, to a small extent and for a moment, our petition has been made with the Lord our God, so that they may leave us a remnant, and so that a secure place in his holy land may be given to us, and so that our God may illuminate our eyes, and may give us a little life in our servitude.
8 Mas agora, por um breve momento, o Senhor nosso Deus foi misericordioso, deixando-nos um remanescente e dando-nos um lugar seguro em seu santuário, e dessa maneira o nosso Deus ilumina os nossos olhos e nos dá um pequeno alívio em nossa escravidão.
9 For we are servants, yet in our servitude our God has not forsaken us, but he has inclined mercy upon us in the sight of the king of the Persians, so that he may give us life, and may raise up the house of our God, and repair its desolations, and give us a hedge in Judah and Jerusalem.
9 Somos escravos, mas o nosso Deus não nos abandonou na escravidão. Ele tem sido bondoso para conosco diante dos reis da Pérsia: Ele nos deu vida nova para reconstruir o templo do nosso Deus e levantar suas ruínas, e nos deu um muro de proteção em Judá e em Jerusalém.
10 And now, our God, what should we say after these things? For we abandoned your commandments,
10 Mas agora, ó nosso Deus, o que podemos dizer depois disto? Pois nós abandonamos os mandamentos que
11 which you instructed by the hand of your servants, the prophets, saying: ‘The land, which you shall enter so that you may possess it, is an unclean land, due to the uncleanness of the peoples and of the other lands, the abominations of those who have filled it, from mouth to mouth, with their filth.’
11 nos deste por meio dos teus servos, os profetas, quando disseste: "A terra que vocês estão conquistando está contaminada pelas práticas repugnantes de seus povos. Com essas práticas eles encheram de impureza toda essa terra.
12 Now therefore, you should not give your daughters to their sons, nor should you receive their daughters for your sons. And you should not seek their peace, nor their prosperity, even forever. So shall you be strengthened, and so shall you eat the good things of the land, and have your sons as your heirs, even for all time.
12 Por isso, não dêem as suas filhas em casamento aos filhos deles, nem aceitem as filhas deles para os filhos de vocês. Nunca procurem o bem-estar e a prosperidade desses povos, para que vocês sejam fortes e desfrutem os bons produtos da terra e a deixem para os seus filhos como herança eterna".
13 And after all that has happened to us because of our very wicked works and our great offense, you, our God, have freed us from our iniquity, and you have given us salvation, just as it is this day,
13 Depois de tudo o que nos aconteceu por causa de nossas más obras e por causa de nossa grande culpa, apesar de que, ó Deus, tu nos puniste menos do que os nossos pecados mereciam e ainda nos deste um remanescente como este,
14 so that we would not turn away and make your commandments void, and so that we would not unite in marriage with the peoples of these abominations. Could you be angry with us even to the very end, so that you would not leave us a remnant to be saved?
14 como podemos voltar a quebrar os teus mandamentos e a realizar casamentos mistos com esses povos de práticas repugnantes? Como não ficarias irado conosco, não nos destruirias, e não nos deixarias sem remanescente ou sobrevivente algum?
15 O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just. For we have been left behind to be saved, just as it is this day. Behold, we are before your sight in our offense. And it is not possible to withstand you in this matter.”
15 Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, tu és justo! E até hoje nos deixaste sobreviver como um remanescente. Aqui estamos diante de ti com a nossa culpa, embora saibamos que por causa dela nenhum de nós pode permanecer na tua presença.
