1 Festus, therefore, having come into the province, after three days went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea,
1 Três dias depois de chegar àquela província , Festo saiu da cidade de Cesareia e foi até Jerusalém.
2 and the chief priest and the principal men of the Jews made manifest to him the things against Paul, and were calling on him,
2 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e os líderes judeus apresentaram lá as suas acusações contra Paulo e pediram a Festo
3 asking favour against him, that he may send for him to Jerusalem, making an ambush to put him to death in the way.
3 o favor de mandar trazer Paulo para Jerusalém. É que eles tinham combinado matar Paulo no caminho.
4 Then, indeed, Festus answered that Paul is kept in Caesarea, and himself is about speedily to go on thither,
4 Mas Festo respondeu: — Paulo está preso em Cesareia, e eu logo voltarei para lá.
5 'Therefore those able among you -- said he -- having come down together, if there be anything in this man -- let them accuse him;'
5 Que os líderes de vocês me acompanhem até lá e o acusem, se é que ele fez algum mal.
6 and having tarried among them more than ten days, having gone down to Caesarea, on the morrow having sat upon the tribunal, he commanded Paul to be brought;
6 Festo passou oito ou dez dias entre eles e depois voltou para Cesareia. No dia seguinte sentou-se no tribunal e mandou que trouxessem Paulo.
7 and he having come, there stood round about the Jews who have come down from Jerusalem -- many and weighty charges they are bringing against Paul, which they were not able to prove,
7 Quando Paulo chegou, os judeus que tinham vindo de Jerusalém ficaram em volta dele e começaram a fazer muitas acusações graves, mas não conseguiram provar nada.
8 he making defence -- 'Neither in regard to the law of the Jews, nor in regard to the temple, nor in regard to Caesar -- did I commit any sin.'
8 Então Paulo se defendeu, dizendo: — Eu não fiz nada contra a
9 And Festus willing to lay on the Jews a favour, answering Paul, said, 'Art you willing, to Jerusalem having gone up, there concerning these things to be judged before me?'
9 Festo, querendo agradar os judeus, perguntou a Paulo: — Você não quer ir a Jerusalém e ser julgado lá por mim a respeito destas coisas?
10 and Paul said, 'At the tribunal of Caesar I am standing, where it behooves me to be judged; to Jews I did no unrighteousness, as you do also very well know;
10 Paulo respondeu: — Estou diante do tribunal do Imperador romano, e é aqui que devo ser julgado. Não fiz mal nenhum aos judeus, como o senhor sabe muito bem.
11 for if indeed I am unrighteous, and anything worthy of death have done, I deprecate not to die; and if there is none of the things of which these accuse me, no one is able to make a favour of me to them; to Caesar I appeal!'
11 Se não respeitei a lei ou se fiz alguma coisa que mereça a pena de morte, estou pronto para morrer. Mas, se o que dizem contra mim não é verdade, ninguém pode me entregar a eles. Portanto, apelo para o Imperador.
12 then Festus, having communed with the council, answered, 'To Caesar you hast appealed; to Caesar you shall go.'
12 Então Festo, depois de conversar com os seus conselheiros, disse: — Já que você apelou para o Imperador, então irá para o Imperador.
13 And certain days having passed, Agrippa the king, and Bernice, came down to Caesarea saluting Festus,
13 Alguns dias depois o rei Agripa e Berenice, sua irmã, chegaram a Cesareia para cumprimentar Festo.
14 and as they were continuing there more days, Festus submitted to the king the things concerning Paul, saying, 'There is a certain man, left by Felix, a prisoner,
14 Quando já fazia alguns dias que eles estavam lá, Festo contou ao rei o caso de Paulo. Ele disse: — Está aqui um homem que Félix deixou como prisioneiro.
15 about whom, in my being at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews laid information, asking a decision against him,
15 Quando fui a Jerusalém, os chefes dos sacerdotes e os líderes dos judeus fizeram acusações contra ele e me pediram que o condenasse.
16 unto whom I answered, that it is not a custom of Romans to make a favour of any man to die, before that he who is accused may have the accusers face to face, and may receive place of defence in regard to the charge laid against him.
16 Mas eu lhes disse que os romanos não costumam condenar ninguém sem primeiro colocar os acusadores diante do acusado, dando a este a oportunidade de se defender.
17 'They, therefore, having come together -- I, making no delay, on the succeeding day having sat upon the tribunal, did command the man to be brought,
17 Por isso, quando eles vieram até aqui, não perdi tempo, e, logo no dia seguinte, sentei no tribunal, e mandei que trouxessem o homem.
18 concerning whom the accusers, having stood up, were bringing against him no accusation of the things I was thinking of,
18 Os seus inimigos chegaram, mas não o acusaram de nenhum crime grave como pensei que iam fazer.
19 but certain questions concerning their own religion they had against him, and concerning a certain Jesus who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive;
19 A única acusação que tinham contra ele era a respeito da própria religião deles e também sobre um homem que já morreu, chamado Jesus. Paulo afirma que esse homem está vivo.
20 and I, doubting in regard to the question concerning this, said, If he would wish to go on to Jerusalem, and there to be judged concerning these things --
20 Eu não sabia como conseguir informações sobre esse assunto. Por isso perguntei a Paulo se queria ir a Jerusalém para ser julgado lá a respeito dessas acusações.
21 but Paul having appealed to be kept to the hearing of Sebastus, I did command him to be kept till I might send him unto Caesar.'
21 Mas Paulo apelou para o Imperador e pediu para ficar preso até que o Imperador resolvesse o seu caso. Então mandei os guardas tomarem conta dele até que eu pudesse mandá-lo para o Imperador.
22 And Agrippa said unto Festus, 'I was wishing also myself to hear the man;' and he said, 'To-morrow you shall hear him;'
22 Aí Agripa disse a Festo: — Eu gostaria de ouvir esse homem. — Amanhã o senhor vai ouvi-lo! — respondeu Festo.
23 on the morrow, therefore -- on the coming of Agrippa and Bernice with much display, and they having entered into the audience chamber, with the chief captains also, and the principal men of the city, and Festus having ordered -- Paul was brought forth.
23 No dia seguinte Agripa e Berenice chegaram com grande cerimônia e pompa. Entraram na sala de audiências com os chefes militares e os homens mais importantes da cidade. Festo mandou que trouxessem Paulo
24 And Festus said, 'King Agrippa, and all men who are present with us, you see this one, about whom all the multitude of the Jews did deal with me, both in Jerusalem and here, crying out, He ought not to live any longer;
24 e disse: — Rei Agripa e todos os que estão aqui, vejam este homem! É contra ele que todos os judeus, tanto daqui como de Jerusalém, estão fazendo acusações diante de mim. Eles insistem em dizer que este homem deve morrer,
25 and I, having found him to have done nothing worthy of death, and he also himself having appealed to Sebastus, I decided to send him,
25 mas eu acho que ele não fez nada para ser condenado à morte. Como ele mesmo pediu para ser julgado pelo Imperador, resolvi atendê-lo.
26 concerning whom I have no certain thing to write to my lord, therefore I brought him forth before you, and specially before you, king Agrippa, that the examination having been made, I may have something to write;
26 Porém até agora não sei bem o que escrever a respeito dele ao Imperador. Então eu o trouxe aqui, diante dos senhores — e especialmente do senhor, rei Agripa — a fim de lhe fazer perguntas. Assim terei alguma coisa para escrever.
27 for it does seem to me irrational, sending a prisoner, not also to signify the charges against him.'
27 Pois acho absurdo mandar um prisioneiro sem explicar claramente as acusações que existem contra ele.
