1 And having passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was the synagogue of the Jews,
1 Tendo passado por Anfípolis e Apolônia, Paulo e Silas chegaram a Tessalônica, onde havia uma sinagoga dos judeus.
2 and according to the custom of Paul, he went in unto them, and for three sabbaths he was reasoning with them from the Writings,
2 Paulo, segundo o seu costume, foi procurá-los e, por três sábados, discutiu com eles a respeito das Escrituras,
3 opening and alleging, 'That the Christ it behoved to suffer, and to rise again out of the dead, and that this is the Christ -- Jesus whom I proclaim to you.'
3 expondo e demonstrando ter sido necessário que o Cristo padecesse e ressuscitasse dos mortos. Paulo dizia: — Este Jesus, que eu anuncio a vocês, é o Cristo.
4 And certain of them did believe, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also of the worshipping Greeks a great multitude, of the principal women also not a few.
4 Alguns deles foram persuadidos e se juntaram a Paulo e Silas. O mesmo aconteceu com numerosa multidão de gregos piedosos e muitas mulheres importantes.
5 And the unbelieving Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to them of the loungers certain evil men, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having assailed also the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring them to the populace,
5 Os judeus, porém, movidos de inveja, trazendo consigo alguns homens maus dentre a malandragem, reuniram uma multidão e provocaram um tumulto na cidade. E, atacando de surpresa a casa de Jasom, procuravam trazer Paulo e Silas para o meio do povo.
6 and not having found them, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the city rulers, calling aloud -- 'These, having put the world in commotion, are also here present,
6 Porém, não os encontrando, arrastaram Jasom e alguns irmãos diante das autoridades, gritando: — Estes que promovem tumulto em todo o mundo chegaram também aqui,
7 whom Jason has received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king -- Jesus.'
7 e Jasom os hospedou na casa dele. Todos estes agem contra os decretos de César, dizendo que existe outro rei, chamado Jesus.
8 And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things,
8 Tanto a multidão como as autoridades ficaram agitadas ao ouvir estas palavras.
9 and having taking security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
9 Porém, depois de terem recebido deles a fiança estipulada, as autoridades soltaram Jasom e os outros.
10 And the brethren immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went to the synagogue of the Jews;
10 E logo, durante a noite, os irmãos enviaram Paulo e Silas para Bereia. Ali chegados, dirigiram-se à sinagoga dos judeus.
11 and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, they received the word with all readiness of mind, every day examining the Writings whether those things were so;
11 Ora, estes de Bereia eram mais nobres do que os de Tessalônica, pois receberam a palavra com toda a avidez, examinando as Escrituras todos os dias para ver se as coisas eram, de fato, assim.
12 many, indeed, therefore, of them did believe, and of the honourable Greek women and men not a few.
12 Com isso, muitos deles creram, mulheres gregas de alta posição social e muitos homens.
13 And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came thither also, agitating the multitudes;
13 Mas, logo que os judeus de Tessalônica souberam que a palavra de Deus era anunciada por Paulo também em Bereia, foram lá agitar e perturbar o povo.
14 and then immediately the brethren sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timothy were remaining there.
14 Então os irmãos fizeram com que Paulo fosse imediatamente para os lados do mar. Porém Silas e Timóteo continuaram em Bereia.
15 And those conducting Paul, brought him unto Athens, and having received a command unto Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come unto him, they departed;
15 Os responsáveis por Paulo levaram-no até Atenas e regressaram trazendo ordem a Silas e Timóteo para que fossem encontrá-lo o mais depressa possível.
16 and Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, beholding the city wholly given to idolatry,
16 Enquanto Paulo os esperava em Atenas, o seu espírito se revoltava em face da idolatria dominante na cidade.
17 therefore, indeed, he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the worshipping persons, and in the market-place every day with those who met with him.
17 Por isso, falava na sinagoga com os judeus e os gentios piedosos; também na praça, todos os dias, com os que se encontravam ali.
18 And certain of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers, were meeting together to see him, and some were saying, 'What would this seed picker wish to say?' and others, 'Of strange demons he does seem to be an announcer;' because Jesus and the rising again he did proclaim to them as good news,
18 E alguns dos filósofos epicureus e estoicos discutiam com ele, havendo quem perguntasse: — Que quer dizer esse tagarela? Outros diziam: — Parece pregador de deuses estranhos. Diziam isso porque Paulo pregava Jesus e a ressurreição.
19 having also taken him, unto the Areopagus they brought him, saying, 'Are we able to know what is this new teaching that is spoken by you,
19 Então, tomando-o consigo, levaram-no ao Areópago, dizendo: — Podemos saber que nova doutrina é essa que você ensina?
20 for certain strange things you do bring to our ears? we wish, then, to know what these things would wish to be;'
20 Pois você nos traz aos ouvidos coisas estranhas e queremos saber o que vem a ser isso.
21 and all Athenians, and the strangers sojourning, for nothing else were at leisure but to say something, and to hear some newer thing.
21 Acontece que todos os de Atenas e os estrangeiros residentes não se ocupavam com outra coisa senão dizer ou ouvir as últimas novidades.
22 And Paul, having stood in the midst of the Areopagus, said, 'Men, Athenians, in all things I perceive you as over-religious;
22 Então Paulo, levantando-se no meio do Areópago, disse: — Senhores atenienses! Percebo que em tudo vocês são bastante religiosos,
23 for passing through and contemplating your objects of worship, I found also an erection on which had been inscribed: To God -- unknown; whom, therefore -- not knowing -- you do worship, this One I announce to you.
23 porque, andando pela cidade e observando os objetos de culto que vocês têm, encontrei também um altar no qual aparece a seguinte inscrição: “ Ao Deus Desconhecido ”. Pois esse que vocês adoram sem conhecer é precisamente aquele que eu lhes anuncio.
24 'God, who did make the world, and all things in it, this One, of heaven and of earth being Lord, in temples made with hands does not dwell,
24 — O Deus que fez o mundo e tudo o que nele existe, sendo ele Senhor do céu e da terra, não habita em santuários feitos por mãos humanas;
25 neither by the hands of men is He served -- needing anything, He giving to all life, and breath, and all things;
25 nem é servido por mãos humanas, como se precisasse de alguma coisa, pois ele mesmo é quem a todos dá vida, respiração e tudo mais.
26 He made also of one blood every nation of men, to dwell upon all the face of the earth -- having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellings --
26 De um só homem fez todas as nações para habitarem sobre a face da terra, havendo fixado os tempos previamente estabelecidos e os limites da sua habitação;
27 to seek the Lord, if perhaps they did feel after Him and find, -- though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us,
27 para buscarem Deus se, porventura, tateando, o possam achar, ainda que não esteja longe de cada um de nós;
28 for in Him we live, and move, and are; as also certain of your poets have said: For of Him also we are offspring.
28 pois nele vivemos, nos movemos e existimos, como alguns dos poetas de vocês disseram: “Porque dele também somos geração.”
29 'Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, graving of art and device of man;
29 Portanto, visto que somos geração de Deus, não devemos pensar que a divindade é semelhante ao ouro, à prata ou à pedra, trabalhados pela arte e imaginação do homem.
30 the times, indeed, therefore, of the ignorance God having overlooked, does now command all men everywhere to reform,
30 Deus não levou em conta os tempos da ignorância, mas agora ele ordena a todas as pessoas, em todos os lugares, que se arrependam.
31 because He did set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He did ordain, having given assurance to all, having raised him out of the dead.'
31 Porque Deus estabeleceu um dia em que julgará o mundo com justiça, por meio de um homem que escolheu. E deu certeza disso a todos, ressuscitando-o dentre os mortos.
32 And having heard of a rising again of the dead, some, indeed, were mocking, but others said, 'We will hear you again concerning this;'
32 Quando ouviram falar de ressurreição de mortos, uns zombaram, e outros disseram: — A respeito disso ouviremos você em outra ocasião.
33 and so Paul went forth from the midst of them,
33 A essa altura, Paulo se retirou do meio deles.
34 and certain men having cleaved to him, did believe, among whom is also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them.
34 Houve, porém, alguns homens que se juntaram a ele e creram; entre eles estava Dionísio, o areopagita, uma mulher chamada Dâmaris e, com eles, mais algumas pessoas.
