Neemias 6

1 Now when it was reported to Sanbal'lat and Tobi'ah and to Geshem the Arab and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),
1 Sanabalat, Tobias, Gossem o árabe, e outros inimigos nossos, souberam que eu havia reconstruído a muralha e que não havia mais brechas; entretanto, até aquele momento eu não havia ainda colocado os batentes nas portas.
2 Sanbal'lat and Geshem sent to me, saying, "Come and let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono." But they intended to do me harm.
2 Mandaram solicitar-me uma entrevista com eles numa das aldeias do vale de Ono. Projetavam fazer-me mal.
3 And I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?"
3 Enviei-lhes mensageiros para dizer-lhes: Estou em vias de executar um trabalho importante; não posso descer. Não tenho desculpa para interromper meu trabalho e não posso deixar a obra para descer a vós.
4 And they sent to me four times in this way and I answered them in the same manner.
4 Quatro vezes eles me endereçaram a mesma mensagem, e eu cada vez enviava-lhes a mesma resposta.
5 In the same way Sanbal'lat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand.
5 Pela quinta vez Sanabalat fez-me a mesma proposta por um seu servo, o qual, desta vez, trazia na mão uma carta aberta
6 In it was written, "It is reported among the nations, and Geshem also says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall; and you wish to become their king, according to this report.
6 que continha o seguinte: Foi divulgado entre as gentes, e Gossem afirma que, se tu reconstróis a muralha, é porque tu e os judeus estais projetando uma revolta. E, pelo que se diz, desejas tornar-te o rei deles,
7 And you have also set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, `There is a king in Judah.' And now it will be reported to the king according to these words. So now come, and let us take counsel together."
7 e terias mesmo enviado profetas para proclamar-te rei de Judá em Jerusalém. Todos esses boatos chegarão aos ouvidos do rei. Vem, pois, e entendamo-nos.
8 Then I sent to him, saying, "No such things as you say have been done, for you are inventing them out of your own mind."
8 Eu lhes respondi: Nada existe de verdadeiro no que dizes: foste tu que inventaste tudo isso.
9 For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done." But now, O God, strengthen thou my hands.
9 Todos procuravam intimidar-nos. Diziam entre si: Fatigar-se-ão de tal modo que abandonarão o trabalho; este jamais será terminado. Agora, pois, ó meu Deus, sustentai os meus braços!
10 Now when I went into the house of Shemai'ah the son of Delai'ah, son of Mehet'abel, who was shut up, he said, "Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple; for they are coming to kill you, at night they are coming to kill you."
10 Fui depois à casa de Semaías, filho de Dalaías, filho de Metabeel, que se tinha fechado em sua residência. Vamos juntos, disse-me ele, à casa de Deus, ao interior do templo, e fechemos as portas do santuário, porque procuram matar-te; nesta mesma noite virão liquidar-te.
11 But I said, "Should such a man as I flee? And what man such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in."
11 Respondi-lhe: Como! Então um homem como eu há de fugir? Por outra parte, como pode um homem como eu entrar no templo sem perder a vida? Ali não entrarei.
12 And I understood, and saw that God had not sent him, but he had pronounced the prophecy against me because Tobi'ah and Sanbal'lat had hired him.
12 Eu compreendera, com efeito, que não fora Deus quem o enviara; se ele tinha pronunciado sobre mim tal predição, era porque Tobias e Sanabalat o haviam subornado.
13 For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so they could give me an evil name, in order to taunt me.
13 Eles o faziam para intimidar-me e fazer-me pecar segundo o seu desejo; isto lhes permitiria cobrir-me de opróbrios e lançar-me em má reputação.
14 Remember Tobi'ah and Sanbal'lat, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also the prophetess No-adi'ah and the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid.
14 Lembrai-vos, ó meu Deus, das maldades de Tobias e de Sanabalat; e também do profeta Noadias, bem como dos outros profetas que procuravam atemorizar-me.
15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.
15 Terminou-se a muralha no vigésimo quinto dia do mês de Elul, em cinqüenta e dois dias.
16 And when all our enemies heard of it, all the nations round about us were afraid and fell greatly in their own esteem; for they perceived that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God.
16 Quando nossos inimigos souberam disso, encheram-se de temor todas as nações vizinhas: pois seu ânimo arrefeceu e reconheceram que, se aquela empresa fora levada a bom termo, era graças ao nosso Deus.
17 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobi'ah, and Tobi'ah's letters came to them.
17 Naquele tempo, Tobias mantinha uma correspondência contínua com certas pessoas importantes de Judá.
18 For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shecani'ah the son of Arah: and his son Jehoha'nan had taken the daughter of Meshul'lam the son of Berechi'ah as his wife.
18 Muitos, com efeito, estavam-lhe unidos por juramento, pois ele era genro de Sequenias, filho de Area, e Joanã, seu filho, era casado com a filha de Mosolão, filho de Baraquias.
19 Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence, and reported my words to him. And Tobi'ah sent letters to make me afraid.
19 Até mesmo o louvavam em minha presença e participavam-lhe as minhas palavras. Esse Tobias era quem me remetia cartas para atemorizar-me.
