1 After this the king of the Ammonites died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
1 E ocorreu, depois disso, que o rei dos filhos de Amom morreu, e Hanum, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar.
2 And David said, "I will deal loyally with Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father dealt loyally with me." So David sent by his servants to console him concerning his father. And David's servants came into the land of the Ammonites.
2 Então, Davi disse: Mostrarei bondade para com Hanum, filho de Naás, como o seu pai mostrou bondade para comigo. E Davi enviou consolo a ele pela mão dos seus servos por causa do seu pai. E os servos de Davi adentraram a terra dos filhos de Amom.
3 But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun their lord, "Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Has not David sent his servants to you to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?"
3 E os príncipes dos filhos de Amom disseram a Hanum, o seu senhor: Tu pensas que Davi presta honra ao teu pai, por isso ele enviou consoladores até ti? Porventura não enviou Davi os seus servos a ti para investigar a cidade, e para espioná-la, e para derrubá-la?
4 So Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off half the beard of each, and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away.
4 Pelo que Hanum tomou os servos de Davi, e raspou metade das suas barbas, e cortou fora metade das suas vestes, até as suas nádegas, e os despediu.
5 When it was told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, "Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return."
5 Quando disseram isto a Davi, ele enviou para encontrá-los, porque os homens estavam sobremaneira envergonhados; e o rei disse: Aguardai em Jericó até que as vossas barbas estejam crescidas e, depois, retornai.
6 When the Ammonites saw that they had become odious to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-re'hob, and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand foot soldiers, and the king of Ma'acah with a thousand men, and the men of Tob, twelve thousand men.
6 E quando os filhos de Amom viram que eles fediam diante de Davi, os filhos de Amom enviaram e contrataram os sírios de Bete-Reobe, e os sírios de Zobá, vinte mil homens de pé, e do rei Maaca mil homens, e de Istobe doze mil homens.
7 And when David heard of it, he sent Jo'ab and all the host of the mighty men.
7 E quando Davi ouviu isto, ele enviou Joabe, e todo o exército dos homens poderosos.
8 And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the gate; and the Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob, and the men of Tob and Ma'acah, were by themselves in the open country.
8 E os filhos de Amom saíram, e ordenaram a batalha à entrada do portão; e os sírios de Zobá, de Reobe, de Istobe e de Maaca estavam sozinhos no campo.
9 When Jo'ab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the picked men of Israel, and arrayed them against the Syrians;
9 Quando Joabe viu que a frente da batalha estava contra ele pela dianteira e retaguarda, ele escolheu de todos os homens escolhidos de Israel, e os pôs em formação contra os sírios;
10 the rest of his men he put in the charge of Abi'shai his brother, and he arrayed them against the Ammonites.
10 e o restante do povo ele entregou na mão de Abisai, seu irmão, para que ele pudesse colocá-los em formação contra os filhos de Amom.
11 And he said, "If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.
11 E ele disse: Se os sírios me forem demasiadamente fortes, então tu me ajudarás; mas se os filhos de Amom te forem demasiadamente fortes, então eu virei e te ajudarei.
12 Be of good courage, and let us play the man for our people, and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what seems good to him."
12 Seja de boa coragem, e vamos jogar com os homens em favor do nosso povo, e das cidades do nosso Deus; e faça o SENHOR aquilo que lhe parecer bom.
13 So Jo'ab and the people who were with him drew near to battle against the Syrians; and they fled before him.
13 E Joabe se aproximou, e o povo que estava com ele, para a batalha contra os sírios; e eles fugiram diante dele.
14 And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abi'shai, and entered the city. Then Jo'ab returned from fighting against the Ammonites, and came to Jerusalem.
14 E quando os filhos de Amom viram que os sírios haviam fugido, então fugiram também eles diante de Abisai, e entraram na cidade. Assim, Joabe retornou dos filhos de Amom e chegou a Jerusalém.
15 But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together.
15 E quando os sírios viram que eles foram feridos diante de Israel, eles se reuniram todos.
16 And Hadade'zer sent, and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphra'tes; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the commander of the army of Hadade'zer at their head.
16 E Hadadezer enviou, e retirou os sírios que estavam além do rio; e eles vieram até Helã; e Sobaque, o capitão do exército de Hadadezer, foi adiante deles.
17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and crossed the Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians arrayed themselves against David, and fought with him.
17 E quando contaram a Davi, ele reuniu todo o Israel, e atravessou o Jordão, e chegou a Helã. E os sírios se puseram em formação contra Davi, e lutaram contra ele.
18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians the men of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and wounded Shobach the commander of their army, so that he died there.
18 E os sírios fugiram diante de Israel; e Davi matou os homens de setecentas carruagens dos sírios, e quarenta mil cavaleiros, e feriu Sobaque, o capitão do exército deles, que morreu ali.
19 And when all the kings who were servants of Hadade'zer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with Israel, and became subject to them. So the Syrians feared to help the Ammonites any more.
19 E quando todos os reis que eram servos de Hadadezer viram que eles foram feridos diante de Israel, fizeram paz com Israel, e os serviram. Assim, os sírios temeram ajudar os filhos de Amom futuramente.
