1 Then came there to be a great outcry of the people and their wives,against their brethren the Jews.
1 Por esse tempo, alguns homens e suas esposas fizeram um grande protesto contra seus irmãos judeus.
2 And there were some who were saying, Our sons and our daughters, are we pledging,that we may obtain corn, and eat, and keep ourselves alive.
2 Alguns deles diziam: “Nossas famílias são grandes; precisamos de mais alimento para sobreviver”.
3 And there were some who were saying, Our fields and our vineyards and our houses, are we pledging,-that we may obtain corn in the dearth.
3 Outros diziam: “Hipotecamos nossos campos, nossas videiras e nossas casas para conseguir comida durante este período de escassez”.
4 And there were others who were saying, We have borrowed silver, for the kings tribute, our lands and our vineyards.
4 Ainda outros diziam: “Tomamos dinheiro emprestado para pagar os impostos do rei sobre nossos campos e vinhedos.
5 Now, therefore, as is the flesh of our brethren, so is our flesh, as are their children, so are our children. Yet lo! we are putting in subjection our sons and our daughters, for bondservants, yea there are some of our daughters already trodden down, and we are powerless, and, our fields and our vineyards, belong to others.
5 Somos da mesma família que os ricos, e nossos filhos são iguais aos filhos deles. Contudo, somos obrigados a vender nossos filhos como escravos só para termos dinheiro suficiente para viver. Já vendemos algumas de nossas filhas, e não há nada que possamos fazer, pois nossos campos e vinhedos agora pertencem a outros”.
6 And it angered me greatly,when I heard their outcry, and these words.
6 Quando ouvi essas reclamações, fiquei muito indignado.
7 So my heart took counsel unto me and I contended with the nobles and with the deputies, and said to them, A loan on interestevery man to his brother, are ye making,So I appointed over them a great assembly;
7 Depois de pensar bem na questão, repreendi os nobres e os oficiais, dizendo: “Vocês estão prejudicando seus próprios irmãos ao cobrar juros quando lhes pedem dinheiro emprestado!”. Em seguida, convoquei uma reunião pública para tratar do problema.
8 and I said unto them, We, have bought our brethren the Jews, who had sold themselves unto the nations, according to our ability, and will, ye, even sell your brethren, or shall they sell themselves unto us? And they were silent, and found no answer.
8 Na reunião, eu lhes disse: “Temos feito todo o possível para resgatar nossos irmãos judeus que se venderam a estrangeiros, mas agora vocês os vendem de volta à escravidão. Quantas vezes precisaremos resgatá-los?”. E eles não tinham nada a dizer em sua defesa.
9 Then said I, Not good, is the thing which ye are doing,ought ye not, in the fear of God, to walk, because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies?
9 Então prossegui: “O que vocês estão fazendo não é certo! Acaso não deviam andar no temor de nosso Deus, para evitar a zombaria das nações inimigas?
10 I too, then, my brethren and my young men, might be lending unto them on interest silver and corn! I pray you, let us leave off this lending on interest!
10 Eu, meus irmãos e os homens que trabalham para mim temos emprestado dinheiro e cereal para o povo. Agora, porém, deixemos de cobrar juros!
11 Restore, I pray you, unto them this very day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses,also the hundredth of silver and corn, new wine and oil, for which ye have been lending to them.
11 Devolvam-lhes hoje mesmo seus campos, seus vinhedos, seus olivais e suas casas. Devolvam também a centésima parte, os juros que cobraram quando lhes emprestaram dinheiro, cereais, vinho novo e azeite”.
12 And they said, We will restore them, and, from them, will we require nothing, so, will we do, as thou, art saying. Then called I the priests, and put them on oath, to do according to this promise.
12 Eles responderam: “Devolveremos tudo e não exigiremos mais nada do povo. Faremos conforme você diz”. Então chamei os sacerdotes e fiz os nobres e os oficiais jurarem que cumpririam sua promessa.
13 Also, my lap, shook I out, and saidThus and thus, may God shake out every man who shall not confirm this promise, out of his house and out of his labour, yea, thus and thus, let him be shaken out and empty,And all the convocation said, Amen! and praised Yahweh, and the people did according to this promise.
13 Depois, sacudi as dobras de meu manto e disse: “Que Deus assim os sacuda de seus lares e de suas propriedades se vocês não cumprirem o que prometeram! Que fiquem sem absolutamente nada!”. Toda a comunidade respondeu: “Amém”, e louvaram o S
14 Moreover, from the day I was commanded to become their pasha in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year, even unto the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, I and my brethren, pashas bread, have not eaten;
14 Durante os doze anos em que fui governador de Judá, do vigésimo ano ao trigésimo segundo ano do reinado do rei Artaxerxes, nem eu nem meus oficiais cobramos o tributo de alimentação ao qual tínhamos direito.
15 whereas, the former pashas, who were before me, suffered themselves to be a burden upon the people, and took from them in bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver, even, their young men, bare rule over the people,but, I, did not so, because of the fear of God.
15 Os governadores anteriores, no entanto, haviam colocado cargas pesadas sobre o povo; exigiam uma porção de alimento e de vinho, além de quarenta peças de prata. Até mesmo os oficiais deles se aproveitavam do povo. Mas, por temor a Deus, não agi dessa maneira.
16 Moreover also, in this work of the wall, I repaired, and, no field, did we buy,though, all my young men, were gathered thither unto the work.
16 Dediquei-me ao trabalho no muro e não adquiri terras. Exigi que todos os meus servos também trabalhassem no muro.
17 And, Jews and deputies, a hundred and fifty men, and they who were coming in unto us from among the nations which were round about us, upon my table.
17 Não pedi nada, embora 150 judeus e oficiais comessem com frequência à minha mesa, além de todos os visitantes de outras terras.
18 Now, that which was prepared for a single day, wasone ox, six choice sheep, also, fowls, were prepared for me, and, apportioned unto ten days, of every sort of wine, in abundance,yet, in spite of this, the bread of the pasha, demanded I not, because heavy was the bondage upon this people.
18 Os suprimentos pelos quais eu pagava todos os dias eram um boi, seis das melhores ovelhas, e muitas aves. Além disso, a cada dez dias, precisávamos de uma grande quantidade de vinhos de todo tipo. E, no entanto, não cobrei o tributo de alimentação a que o governador tinha direito, pois o trabalho que o povo realizava já representava uma carga pesada.
19 Remember unto me, O my God, for good,all that I have done for this people.
19 Lembra-te, ó meu Deus, de tudo que tenho feito por este povo, e abençoa-me por isso.
