1 And the sons of Israel did the thing that was wicked, in the sight of Yahweh,so Yahweh delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years;
1 Os israelitas fizeram o que era mau aos olhos do S enhor . Por isso, o S enhor os entregou nas mãos dos midianitas durante sete anos.
2 and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel,because of Midian, did the sons of Israel prepare for themselves the hollows which were in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.
2 Os midianitas eram tão cruéis que os israelitas fizeram para si esconderijos nas montanhas, nas cavernas e nas fortalezas.
3 And so it used to be, if Israel had sown, then came up Midian and Amalek and the sons of the east, yea came up against them,
3 Sempre que os israelitas faziam o plantio, saqueadores de Midiã, de Amaleque e de outros povos do leste atacavam Israel,
4 and encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the land, until thou comest unto Gaza,neither left they sustenance in Israel, nor sheep nor ox, nor ass;
4 acampavam na terra e destruíam as plantações até Gaza. Levavam ovelhas, bois e jumentos, e não deixavam coisa alguma para Israel comer.
5 for, they with their cattle, used to come up, with their tentsyea they used to come like locusts, for multitude, both they and their cattle, were without number,so they came into the land, to lay it waste.
5 Esses bandos inimigos, que vinham com seus rebanhos e tendas, eram como uma praga de gafanhotos. Chegavam em camelos, tão numerosos que era impossível contá-los, e só partiam quando a terra estava devastada.
6 Thus was Israel greatly impoverished, because of Midian,and the sons of Israel made outcry unto Yahweh.
6 Os midianitas reduziram Israel à mais absoluta pobreza, e o povo pediu socorro ao S enhor .
7 And it came to pass, when the sons of Israel cried unto Yahweh,on account of Midian,
7 Quando os israelitas clamaram ao S enhor por causa de Midiã,
8 then sent Yahweh a prophet unto the sons of Israel,who said unto themThus, saith Yahweh, God of Israel, I, led you up out of Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of servants;
8 o S enhor lhes enviou um profeta, que disse: “Assim diz o S enhor , Deus de Israel: Eu os tirei da escravidão no Egito.
9 Yea I rescued you out of the hand of Egypt, and out of the hand of all who oppressed you,that I might drive them out from before you, and I gave unto you their land;
9 Eu os livrei dos egípcios e de todos que os oprimiam. Expulsei seus inimigos e dei a vocês a terra deles.
10 Yea and I said to you,I, Yahweh, am your God, Ye must not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye are about to dwell,But ye have not hearkened unto my voice.
10 Disse a vocês: ‘Eu sou o S enhor , seu Deus. Não adorem os deuses dos amorreus, em cujas terras agora vivem’. Mas vocês não me deram ouvidos”.
11 Then came the messenger of Yahweh, and sat down under the oak which was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash, the Abiezrite; and, Gideon his son, was beating out wheat in the winepress, to escape the notice of the Midianites;
11 Então o anjo do S enhor veio e sentou-se debaixo do grande carvalho em Ofra que pertencia a Joás, do clã de Abiezer. Gideão, filho de Joás, estava debulhando trigo no fundo de uma prensa de uvas, a fim de não ser descoberto pelos midianitas.
12 so the messenger of Yahweh appeared unto him,and said unto him, Yahweh, is with thee, thou mighty man of valour!
12 O anjo do S enhor apareceu a Gideão e disse: “O S enhor está com você, guerreiro corajoso!”.
13 And Gideon said unto himPardon, my lord! if Yahweh be with us, then wherefore hath all this befallen us? and where are all his wonders, which our fathers have recounted to ussaying, Was it not, out of Egypt, that Yahweh brought us up? But, now, hath Yahweh abandoned us, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.
13 Gideão respondeu: “Meu senhor, se o S enhor está conosco, por que nos aconteceu tudo isso? E onde estão os milagres de que nossos antepassados nos falaram? Acaso não disseram: ‘O S enhor nos tirou do Egito’? Agora, porém, o S enhor nos abandonou e nos entregou nas mãos dos midianitas!”.
14 And Yahweh, turned unto him, and saidGo in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel, out of the hand of Midian,have I not sent thee?
14 Então o S enhor se voltou para ele e disse: “Vá com a força que você tem e liberte Israel dos midianitas. Sou eu quem o envia!”.
15 And he said unto himPardon, O my Lord! How, shall I save Israel? Lo! my thousand, is the poorest in Manasseh, and, I, am the youngest in the house of my father.
15 “Mas, Senhor, como posso libertar Israel?”, perguntou Gideão. “Meu clã é o mais fraco de toda a tribo de Manassés, e eu sou o menos importante de minha família!”
16 And Yahweh said unto himI will be with thee,so shalt thou smite the Midianites, as one man.
16 “Certamente estarei com você”, disse o S enhor . “E você destruirá os midianitas como se estivesse lutando contra um só homem.”
17 And he said unto him, If, I beseech thee, I have found favour in thine eyes, then wilt thou work for me a sign, that it is, thou, who art speaking with me.
17 Gideão respondeu: “Se, de fato, posso contar com tua ajuda, dá-me um sinal de que é mesmo o S enhor quem fala comigo.
18 Do not, I beseech thee, withdraw from hence, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said: I, will tarry until thou return.
18 Por favor, não vás embora até que eu te traga a minha oferta”. Ele respondeu: “Ficarei aqui até você voltar”.
19 So, Gideon, went in, and made ready a kid of the goats, and, of an ephah of meal, unleavened cakes, the flesh, he put in a basket, and, the broth, he put in a pot,and brought them forth unto him, under the oak, and presented them.
19 Gideão foi depressa para casa. Cozinhou um cabrito e, com cerca de vinte litros de farinha, preparou pães sem fermento. Depois, colocou a carne num cesto e o caldo numa panela, os levou para fora e os ofereceu ao anjo que estava debaixo da grande árvore.
20 And the messenger of God said unto himTake the flesh and the cakes, and set them on this crag, and, the broth, do thou pour out. And he did so.
20 O anjo de Deus lhe disse: “Coloque a carne e os pães sem fermento sobre esta pedra e derrame neles o caldo”. Gideão obedeceu.
21 Then the messenger of Yahweh put forth the end of the staff, that was in his hand, and touched the flesh, and the cakes,and there came up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh, and the cakes, and, the messenger of Yahweh, had departed out of his sight.
21 Então o anjo do S enhor tocou na carne e nos pães com a ponta da vara que estava em sua mão, e fogo subiu da pedra e consumiu tudo que Gideão havia trazido. E o anjo do S enhor desapareceu.
22 Then saw Gideon that, the messenger of Yahweh, it was,so Gideon saidAlas, My Lord Yahweh! forasmuch as I have seen the messenger of Yahweh, face to face!
22 Quando Gideão percebeu que era o anjo do S enhor , exclamou: “Ó Soberano S enhor , estou perdido! Vi o anjo do S enhor face a face!”.
23 And Yahweh said unto himPeace be unto thee! Do not fear,thou shalt not die.
23 “Fique em paz”, respondeu o S enhor . “Não tenha medo; você não morrerá.”
24 So Gideon built there an altar unto Yahweh, and called it, Yahweh-shalom. Unto this day, it remaineth, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
24 Então Gideão construiu um altar para o S enhor naquele local e o chamou de Javé-Shalom. Até hoje o altar está em Ofra, no território do clã de Abiezer.
25 And it came to pass, on that night, that Yahweh said unto himTake the young bullock that belongeth to thy father, even the second bullock of seven years,and throw thou down the altar of Baal, that belongeth to thy father, and, the sacred stem that is by it, shalt thou cut down.
25 Naquela noite, o S enhor disse a Gideão: “Tome o segundo touro do rebanho de seu pai, aquele de sete anos. Derrube o altar que seu pai fez para Baal e corte o poste de Aserá que fica ao lado do altar.
26 Then shalt thou build an altar, unto Yahweh thy God, on the top of this fort, with the pile,and shalt take the second bullock, and cause it to go up as an ascending-sacrifice, with the wood of the sacred stem which thou shalt cut down.
26 Depois, construa um altar para o S enhor , seu Deus, no alto desta colina, arrumando as pedras com cuidado. Sacrifique o touro sobre o altar como holocausto e use como lenha a madeira do poste de Aserá que você cortará”.
27 So Gideon took ten men from among his servants, and did as Yahweh had spoken unto him,and so it was that, as he too much feared the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do it by day, he did it by night.
27 Gideão levou dez de seus servos e fez o que o S enhor mandou. Porém, fez tudo de noite, com medo de sua família e do povo da cidade.
28 And the men of the city rose up early in the morning, and lo! the altar of Baal, had been overthrown, and, the sacred stem that was by it, had been cut down, and the second bullock had been caused to ascend upon the altar that had been built.
28 Logo cedo no dia seguinte, quando os habitantes da cidade começaram a despertar, alguém descobriu que o altar de Baal havia sido derrubado e que o poste de Aserá ao lado dele tinha sido cortado. Em seu lugar, havia um novo altar, sobre o qual estavam os restos do touro sacrificado.
29 So they said, one to another, Who hath done this thing? And they inquired, and made search, and it was said, Gideon son of Joash, hath done this thing.
29 Os habitantes perguntaram uns aos outros: “Quem fez isso?”. Depois de uma investigação cuidadosa, descobriram que tinha sido Gideão, filho de Joás.
30 So the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring forth thy son, that he may die,because he hath overthrown the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the sacred stem that was by it.
30 “Traga seu filho para fora”, os homens da cidade exigiram de Joás. “Ele deve morrer, pois derrubou o altar de Baal e cortou o poste de Aserá!”
31 And Joash said unto all who stood by himWill, ye, plead for Baal, or will, ye, save him? Whoso pleadeth for him, let him be put to death while it is yet morning,if, a god, he be let him plead for himself, because one hath overthrown his altar.
31 Joás, porém, gritou para a multidão que o confrontava: “Por que vocês defendem Baal? Acaso pretendem salvá-lo? Quem lutar pela causa dele será morto pela manhã! Se Baal é realmente um deus, que ele próprio se defenda e destrua quem derrubou seu altar!”.
32 So he was called on that day, Jerubbaal, saying,Let Baal, plead against him. Because he had overthrown his altar.
32 Dali em diante, Gideão foi chamado de Jerubaal (isto é, “Que Baal lute com ele”), pois derrubou o altar de Baal.
33 Now, all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the sons of the east, were gathered together,and they crossed over and pitched in the vale of Jezreel.
33 Pouco tempo depois, os exércitos de Midiã, de Amaleque e de outros povos do leste se uniram. Eles atravessaram o Jordão e acamparam no vale de Jezreel.
34 But, the spirit of Yahweh, clothed Gideon,so he blew with a horn, and Abiezer was gathered after him.
34 Então o Espírito do S enhor veio sobre Gideão, que tocou a trombeta de chifre de carneiro, convocando para a batalha, e os homens do clã de Abiezer o seguiram.
35 Messengers also, sent he throughout all Manasseh, and, they also, were gathered after him,messengers also, sent he throughout Asher, and throughout Zebulun, and throughout Naphtali, and they came up to meet them.
35 Também enviou mensageiros às tribos de Manassés, Aser, Zebulom e Naftali, convocando seus guerreiros, e todos atenderam ao chamado.
36 And Gideon said unto God,If thou art about to bring salvation, by my hand, unto Israel, as thou hast spoken,
36 Então Gideão disse a Deus: “Se de fato vais me usar para salvar Israel, como prometeste,
37 lo! I am placing a woollen fleece, on the threshing-floor,if, dew, be on the fleece alone and, on all the ground, it be dry, then shall I know that thou wilt bring salvation, by my hand, unto Israel, as thou hast spoken.
37 dá-me uma prova da seguinte forma. Hoje à noite, deixarei um pouco de lã na eira, onde se peneiram os grãos. Se pela manhã a lã estiver molhada de orvalho, mas o chão estiver seco, saberei que vais me ajudar a salvar Israel, como prometeste”.
38 And it was so, and he rose up early, on the morrow, and pressed together the fleece,and wrung out the dew from the fleece, a small bowl full of water.
38 E foi exatamente o que aconteceu. Na manhã seguinte, bem cedo, Gideão se levantou, espremeu a lã e recolheu uma tigela cheia de água.
39 Then said Gideon unto God, Let not thine anger kindle upon me, but let me speak, only this once,Let me, I pray thee, put to the proof, only this once, with the fleece, I pray thee, let it be dry on the fleece alone, while, on all the ground, there be dew.
39 Então Gideão disse a Deus: “Peço que não fiques irado comigo, mas que me permitas fazer mais um pedido. Deixa-me usar esta lã para mais uma prova. Desta vez, que a lã fique seca e o chão ao redor dela fique coberto de orvalho”.
40 And God did so on that night,and it was dry on the fleece alone, while, on all the ground, there was dew.
40 Naquela noite, Deus fez o que Gideão havia pedido. Pela manhã, a lã estava seca, mas o chão estava coberto de orvalho.
