1 And it was vexing unto Jonah, with a great vexation,and it angered him.
1 Isso tudo deixou Jonas aborrecido e muito irado.
2 So he prayed unto Yahweh, and saidAh now! Yahweh! Was not, this, my word, while I was yet upon mine own soil? For this cause, did I hasten to flee unto Tarshish,because I knew that, thou, art a GOD of favour and compassion, slow to anger, and abundant in lovingkindness, and art grieved over calamity.
2 Então, orou ao S enhor : “Antes de eu sair de casa, não foi isso que eu disse que tu farias, ó S enhor ? Por esse motivo fugi para Társis! Sabia que és Deus misericordioso e compassivo, lento para se irar e cheio de amor. Estás pronto a voltar atrás e não trazer calamidade.
3 Now, therefore, O Yahweh, take, I pray thee, my life from me,for it were better for me, to die, than, to live.
3 Agora tira minha vida, S enhor ! Para mim é melhor morrer que viver desse modo”.
4 Then said Yahweh, Art thou rightly angry?
4 O S enhor respondeu: “Você acha certo ficar tão irado assim?”.
5 But Jonah, went forth, out of the city, and abode on the east side of the city; and made for himself there, a hut, and sat under it, in the shade, until he should see what would become of the city.
5 Então Jonas foi até um lugar a leste de Nínive e construiu um abrigo para sentar-se à sua sombra enquanto esperava para ver o que aconteceria à cidade.
6 Now Yahweh God appointed a gourd, and caused it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his vexation,and Jonah rejoiced over the gourd, with great rejoicing.
6 O S enhor Deus fez crescer ali uma planta, que logo espalhou suas folhas grandes sobre a cabeça de Jonas e o protegeu do sol. Isso aliviou o desconforto de Jonas, e ele ficou muito grato pela planta.
7 But God appointed a worm, at the uprisings of the dawn, the next day,and it smote the gourd, that it withered.
7 No dia seguinte, porém, ao amanhecer, Deus também mandou uma lagarta. Ela comeu o talo da planta, que secou.
8 And it came to pass, at the breaking forth of the sun, that God appointed a sultry east wind, and the sun smote upon the head of Jonah, that he became faint,and asked his life, that he might die, and said, It were better for me, to die, than, to live.
8 Quando o calor do sol se intensificou, Deus mandou um vento leste quente soprar sobre Jonas. O sol bateu em sua cabeça até ele sentir-se tão fraco que desejou morrer. “Para mim é melhor morrer que viver desse modo”, disse ele.
9 Then said God unto Jonah, Art thou rightly angry over the gourd? And he said, I am rightly angry, unto death.
9 Deus perguntou a Jonas: “Você acha certo ficar tão irado por causa da planta?”. Jonas respondeu: “Sim, acho certo ficar tão irado a ponto de querer morrer!”.
10 Then said Yahweh, Thou, wouldest have spared the gourd, for which thou hadst not toiled, neither hadst thou made it grow,which, as the off-spring of a night, came up, and, as the offspring of a night, perished;
10 Então o S enhor disse: “Você tem compaixão de uma planta, embora não tenha feito coisa alguma para que ela crescesse. Ela depressa apareceu e depressa murchou.
11 And was not, I, to spare Nineveh, the great city,wherein are more than twelve times ten thousand human beings, who cannot discern between their right hand and their left, besides much cattle?
11 Nínive, porém, tem mais de 120 mil pessoas que não sabem decidir entre o certo e o errado, sem falar de muitos animais. Acaso não devo ter compaixão dessa grande cidade?”.
