1 And the word of Yahweh came unto Jonah son of Amittai, saying:
1 Ora, a Palavra do SENHOR veio a Jonas, filho de Amitai, dizendo:
2 Arise, get thee to Nineveh the great city, and proclaim unto it,that their wickedness, hath come up, before me.
2 Levanta-te, vai à Nínive, aquela grande cidade, e clama contra ela, pois a sua maldade subiu diante de mim.
3 But Jonah arose to flee unto Tarshish, away from the presence of Yahweh,and went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish, so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish,, away from the presence of Yahweh.
3 Mas Jonas se levantou para fugir para Társis, longe da presença do SENHOR, e desceu a Jope, onde encontrou um navio que ia para Társis; pagou, pois, a sua passagem, e desceu para dentro dele, para ir com eles para Társis, longe da presença do SENHOR.
4 But, Yahweh, hurled a great wind against the sea,and, there arose a mighty tempest in the sea,and, the ship, thought to be broken in pieces,
4 Mas o SENHOR enviou um grande vento ao mar, e houve uma poderosa tempestade no mar, de modo que o navio estava a ponto de quebrar-se.
5 Then were the mariners, afraid, and made outcry every man unto his own god, and they hurled the wares which were in the ship, into the sea, to lighten it of them,but, Jonah, had gone down into the hinder parts of the vessel, and had lain down, and fallen into a sound sleep.
5 Então os marinheiros ficaram com medo, e cada homem clamou ao seu deus, e lançaram as cargas que estavam no navio ao mar, para o aliviarem. Mas Jonas desceu ao porão do navio, e deitado, dormiu profundamente.
6 Then drew near unto him the shipmaster, and said to him, What meanest thou, O sound sleeper? Arise, cry unto thy God, Peradventure God will bethink himself of us, that we perish not.
6 E o mestre do navio dirigiu-se a ele, e disse-lhe: que tens, ó dorminhoco? Levanta-te, clama ao teu Deus, talvez assim, Deus pensará em nós, para que não pereçamos.
7 And they saidevery one unto his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may get to know for whose sake this calamity is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
7 E disseram cada um ao seu companheiro: vinde, e lancemos sorte, para que saibamos por que causa esse mal está sobre nós. Assim eles lançaram sorte, e a sorte caiu sobre Jonas.
8 Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose sake this calamity is upon us? What is thy business? and from whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
8 Então eles lhe disseram: diga-nos, lhe pedimos, por causa de quem este mal está sobre nós? Qual é a tua ocupação? De onde vens? Qual é a tua terra? E de que povo és tu?
9 And he said unto them, A Hebrew, am I,and, Yahweh, the God of the heavens, do, I, revere, him who made the sea, and the dry land.
9 E ele lhes disse: eu sou hebreu, e temo ao SENHOR, o Deus do céu, que fez o mar e a terra seca.
10 Then did the men revere with great reverence, and said unto him, What is it thou hast done? For the men knew that, away from the presence of Yahweh, he was fleeing,for he had told them.
10 Então os homens se encheram de medo, e disseram-lhe: por que tu fizeste isto? Pois os homens sabiam que ele fugia da presença do SENHOR, porque ele lhes tinha dito.
11 Then said they unto him, What shall we de to thee, that the sea may cease raging over us? For, the sea, was raging more and more.
11 Então disseram-lhe: o que devemos fazer contigo, para que o mar se acalme para nós? Pois o mar estava agitado e tempestuoso.
12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and hurl me into the sea, that the sea may cease raging over you,for I do know that, for my sake, is this great tempest upon you.
12 E ele lhes disse: levantai-me, e lançai-me ao mar, para que ele se acalme; pois eu sei que é por minha causa que esta grande tempestade está sobre vós.
13 Nevertheless the men, wrought hard, to bring it back unto the land, but could not,for, the sea, was raging over them more and more.
13 Entretanto, os homens remaram forte, para trazer o navio à terra, mas eles não conseguiram, pois o mar estava agitado e tempestuoso contra eles.
14 Then cried they unto Yahweh, and said, Ah now, Yahweh, pray let it not be that we perish for this mans life, neither lay upon us innocent blood,for, thou, O Yahweh, as thou hast pleased, hast ever done.
14 Por isso eles clamaram ao SENHOR, e disseram: nós te rogamos, ó SENHOR! Nós te rogamos, que não nos deixe perecer por causa da vida deste homem, e que não ponha sobre nós sangue inocente; pois tu, ó SENHOR, fizeste o que desejavas.
15 So they took up Jonah and hurled him into the sea,and the sea, left off, her roaring.
15 Então eles tomaram Jonas, e o lançaram ao mar, e cessou o mar da sua fúria.
16 Then did the men revere Yahweh with a great reverence,and offered sacrifice to Yahweh, and vowed vows.
16 Então os homens temeram muito ao SENHOR, ofereceram sacrifício ao SENHOR e fizeram votos.
17 Now Yahweh had appointed a great fish, to swallow up Jonah,and Jonah was in the belly of the fish, three days and three nights.
17 Mas o SENHOR havia preparado um grande peixe, para que engolisse Jonas. E ele esteve no ventre do peixe três dias e três noites.
