1 Then came up Nahash the Ammonite, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead,and all the man of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Solemnise with us a covenant, that we may serve thee.
1 Então subiu Naás, amonita, e sitiou a Jabes-Gileade; e disseram todos os homens de Jabes a Naás: Faze aliança conosco, e te serviremos.
2 And Nahash the Ammonite said unto them, Hereby, will I solemnise with you by digging out for you, every ones right eye,and laying it for a reproach, upon all Israel.
2 Porém Naás, amonita, lhes disse: Com esta condição farei aliança convosco: que a todos vos arranque o olho direito, e assim ponha esta afronta sobre todo o Israel.
3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto himGive us a respite of seven days, that we may send messengers throughout all the bounds of Israel,and then, if there is none to save us, we will come out unto thee.
3 Então os anciãos de Jabes lhe disseram: Deixa-nos por sete dias, para que enviemos mensageiros por todos os termos de Israel, e, não havendo ninguém que nos livre, então viremos a ti.
4 And, when the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, and spake the words in the ears of the people, all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
4 E, vindo os mensageiros a Gibeá de Saul, falaram estas palavras aos ouvidos do povo. Então todo o povo levantou a sua voz, e chorou.
5 But lo! Saul, came in, following the oxen, out of the field, and Saul said, What aileth the people, that they should weep? Then were recounted to him the words of the men of Jabesh.
5 E eis que Saul vinha do campo, atrás dos bois; e disse Saul: Que tem o povo, que chora? E contaram-lhe as palavras dos homens de Jabes.
6 And the Spirit of God came suddenly upon Saul, when he heard these words,and his anger raged furiously.
6 Então o Espírito de Deus se apoderou de Saul, ouvindo estas palavras; e acendeu-se em grande maneira a sua ira.
7 So he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent throughout all the bounds of Israel by the hand of messengerssaying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul, and after Samuel, so, shall it be done unto his oxen. Then felt the dread of Yahweh, upon the people, and they came forth, as one man.
7 E tomou uma junta de bois, e cortou-os em pedaços, e os enviou a todos os termos de Israel pelas mãos dos mensageiros, dizendo: Qualquer que não seguir a Saul e a Samuel, assim se fará aos seus bois. Então caiu o temor do Senhor sobre o povo, e saíram como um só homem.
8 And, when he numbered them in Bezek, the sons of Israel were found to bethree hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
8 E contou-os em Bezeque; e houve dos filhos de Israel trezentos mil, e dos homens de Judá trinta mil.
9 So they said unto the messengers who had comeThus, shall ye surely say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, To-morrow, shall ye have deliverance, about the time the son is hot. And, when the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they rejoiced.
9 Então disseram aos mensageiros que vieram: Assim direis aos homens de Jabes-Gileade: Amanhã, em aquecendo o sol, vos virá livramento. Vindo, pois, os mensageiros, e anunciando-o aos homens de Jabes, se alegraram.
10 So the men of Jabesh said, To-morrow, will we come out unto you,Then shall ye do with us, according to all that is good in your eyes.
10 E os homens de Jabes disseram aos amonitas: Amanhã sairemos a vós; então nos fareis conforme a tudo o que parecer bem aos vossos olhos.
11 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Saul set the people in three companies, and they entered into the midst of the host, during the morning watch, and smote Ammon until the day was hot. And it came to pass that, they who were left, were scattered, so that there were not left among them, two together.
11 E sucedeu que ao outro dia Saul pôs o povo em três companhias, e vieram ao meio do arraial pela vigília da manhã, e feriram aos amonitas até que o dia aqueceu; e sucedeu que os restantes se espalharam, de modo que não ficaram dois deles juntos.
12 Then said the people unto Samuel, Who is he that was saying, Shall, Saul, reign over us? Give up the men, that we may put them to death.
12 Então disse o povo a Samuel: Quem é aquele que dizia que Saul não reinaria sobre nós? Dai-nos aqueles homens, e os mataremos.
13 But Saul said, There shall not be put to death a man, this day,for, to-day, hath Yahweh wrought deliverance in Israel.
13 Porém Saul disse: Hoje não morrerá nenhum, pois hoje tem feito o Senhor um livramento em Israel.
14 Then said Samuel unto the people, Come and let us go to Gilgal,and let us there renew the kingdom.
14 E disse Samuel ao povo: Vinde, vamos nós a Gilgal, e renovemos ali o reino.
15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and made Saul king there, before Yahweh, in Gilgal, and offered there sacrifices of peace-offerings before Yahweh,and Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced there, exceedingly.
15 E todo o povo partiu para Gilgal, onde proclamaram a Saul por rei perante o Senhor, e ofereceram ali ofertas pacíficas perante o Senhor; e Saul se alegrou muito ali com todos os homens de Israel.
