1 King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon appointed Zedekiah, son of Josiah, to be king of Judah. Zedekiah succeeded Jehoiakin, son of Jehoiakim.
1 O rei Sedecias, filho de Josias, sucedeu a {Je} Conias, filho de Joaquim, tendo sido proclamado rei da terra de Judá por Nabucodonosor, rei de Babilônia.
2 Zedekiah, his administrators, and the common people did not listen to what Jehovah spoke through the prophet Jeremiah.
2 Nem ele, porém, nem seus súditos e a população da terra escutaram os oráculos que lhes transmitia o Senhor, por intermédio do profeta Jeremias.
3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to the prophet Jeremiah. They asked him: »Please pray to Jehovah our God for us.«
3 O rei Sedecias enviou, entretanto, Jucal, filho de Selemias, e o sacerdote Sofonias, filho de Maasias, ao profeta Jeremias, a fim de lhe dizer: Intercede por nós junto ao Senhor, nosso Deus.
4 Jeremiah was still free to come and go among the people. The people of Jerusalem had not put him in prison yet.
4 Jeremias, que ainda não havia sido aprisionado, andava entre o povo.
5 Pharaoh's army came from Egypt. When the Babylonians who were blockading Jerusalem heard this news, they retreated from Jerusalem.
5 Partira então do Egito o exército do faraó. Ao receberem tal notícia, os caldeus, que sitiavam Jerusalém, abandonaram a cidade.
6 Jehovah spoke his word to the prophet Jeremiah:
6 Nestes termos foi a palavra do Senhor dirigida ao profeta Jeremias: Eis o que diz o Senhor Deus de Israel:
7 »This is what Jehovah the God of Israel says: Say this to the king of Judah, who sent you to get advice from me: »Pharaoh's army has come out to help you. But it will go back to Egypt, its own land.
7 assim falarás ao rei de Judá que te envia seus delegados para interrogar-me: o exército do faraó que saiu para vos dar socorro vai regressar ao Egito.
8 »Then the Babylonians will return. They will attack the city, capture it, and burn it down.«
8 Voltarão os caldeus a sitiar a cidade, tomá-la-ão de assalto e a entregarão às chamas.
9 »Jehovah says: Do not deceive yourselves by thinking that the Babylonians will leave you. They will not leave you.
9 Oráculo do Senhor: não queirais enganar-vos, julgando que os caldeus se irão definitivamente. Eles não irão embora.
10 »Even if you would defeat the entire Babylonian army so that they had only a few badly wounded men left in their tents, they would get up and burn down this city!« «
10 Ainda que derrotásseis todo o exército dos caldeus que combate contra vós, e que dele só restassem feridos sob as tendas, cada um deles ainda se levantaria para incendiar a cidade.
11 The Babylonian army retreated from Jerusalem because Pharaoh's army was coming.
11 Quando as tropas dos caldeus se afastaram de Jerusalém, ante a aproximação do exército do faraó,
12 Jeremiah wanted to leave Jerusalem and go to the territory of Benjamin to take possession of his property there among the people.
12 quis Jeremias sair da cidade para dirigir-se à terra de Benjamim, a fim de lá se reabastecer com o resto do povo.
13 When he came to Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard there, whose name was Irijah, son of Shelemiah and grandson of Hananiah, arrested the prophet Jeremiah. He said: »You are deserting to the Babylonians!«
13 Encontrava-se porém um guarda às portas de Benjamim, chamado Jerias, filho de Selemias, filho de Ananias, o qual, ao chegar o profeta, deteve-o, dizendo: tu foges para os caldeus.
14 Jeremiah answered: »That is not true! I am not deserting to the Babylonians.« But Irijah would not listen to him. Irijah arrested Jeremiah and took him to the officials.
14 É falso! retorquiu o profeta, eu não passo para os caldeus. Não quis porém Jerias ouvi-lo; prendeu-o e levou-o à presença dos chefes.
15 The officials were so angry with Jeremiah that they beat him and put him in prison in the scribe Jonathan's house, which had been turned into a prison.
15 E estes, enfurecendo-se contra Jeremias, açoitaram-no e prenderam-no na casa do escriba Jonatã, transformada em prisão.
16 Jeremiah went into a prison cell, and he stayed there a long time.
16 Foi então o profeta atirado num calabouço, onde permaneceu vários dias.
17 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah, and the king asked him privately in the palace: »Is there any message from Jehovah? Jeremiah answered: Yes! There is a message from Jehovah. You will be handed over to the king of Babylon.«
17 O rei Sedecias, porém, mandou-o buscar, a fim de interrogá-lo secretamente em seu palácio. Tens, porventura, perguntou-lhe, algum oráculo do Senhor? Sim, respondeu-lhe Jeremias. Serás entregue nas mãos do rei de Babilônia.
18 Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah: »What crime have I committed against you, your administrators, or these people? Why have you put me in prison?
18 E acrescentou ao rei Sedecias: em que te ofendi, a ti, aos teus servos e a teu povo, para que me lançasses na prisão?
19 »Where are the prophets who told you that the king of Babylon would not attack you and this land?
19 Onde estão os profetas que vos prediziam não dever mais voltar o rei de Babilônia contra vós e contra a terra?
20 »Your Majesty, please listen, and accept my plea for mercy. Do not return me to the scribe Jonathan's house, or I will die there.«
20 Escuta-me, agora, ó meu rei e digna-te acolher minha súplica: não permitas que seja eu reconduzido à casa do escriba Jonatã, para que eu não morra lá.
21 King Zedekiah gave the command to have Jeremiah put in the courtyard of the prison. He gave him a loaf of bread every day from the bakers' street until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the prison.
21 Ordenou então o rei Sedecias que Jeremias fosse retido no pátio do cárcere e que lhe dessem todos os dias uma torta de pão, da rua dos Padeiros, enquanto na cidade houvesse pão. E assim permaneceu Jeremias no pátio do cárcere.
