1 The number of disciples increased at that time. A murmuring arose on the part of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution.
1 Naqueles dias, crescendo o número de discípulos, os judeus de fala grega entre eles queixaram-se dos judeus de fala hebraica, porque suas viúvas estavam sendo esquecidas na distribuição diária de alimento.
2 The twelve called the congregation of the disciples to them. They said: »It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God and serve tables.
2 Por isso os Doze reuniram todos os discípulos e disseram: "Não é certo negligenciarmos o ministério da palavra de Deus, a fim de servir às mesas.
3 »Therefore brothers select seven men who have a good reputation. Men who are full of spirit and wisdom that we may appoint to take care of this business.
3 Irmãos, escolham entre vocês sete homens de bom testemunho, cheios do Espírito e de sabedoria. Passaremos a eles essa tarefa
4 »We will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.«
4 e nos dedicaremos à oração e ao ministério da palavra".
5 The idea pleased the whole congregation. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch,
5 Tal proposta agradou a todos. Então escolheram Estêvão, homem cheio de fé e do Espírito Santo, além de Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timom, Pármenas e Nicolau, um convertido ao judaísmo, proveniente de Antioquia.
6 whom they set before the apostles. After they prayed, they laid their hands on them.
6 Apresentaram esses homens aos apóstolos, os quais oraram e lhes impuseram as mãos.
7 The word of God increased. The number of the disciples greatly multiplied in Jerusalem. Even a great number of priests became obedient to the faith.
7 Assim, a palavra de Deus se espalhava. Crescia rapidamente o número de discípulos em Jerusalém; também um grande número de sacerdotes obedecia à fé.
8 Stephen, full of grace and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
8 Estêvão, homem cheio da graça e do poder de Deus, realizava grandes maravilhas e sinais entre o povo.
9 Certain men arose from the synagogue. It was called the synagogue of the Libertines, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians. Some of them were from Cilicia and Asia. They argued with Stephen.
9 Contudo, levantou-se oposição dos membros da chamada Sinagoga dos Libertos, dos judeus de Cirene e de Alexandria, bem como das províncias da Cilícia e da Ásia. Esses homens começaram a discutir com Estêvão,
10 They were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke.
10 mas não podiam resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito com que ele falava.
11 They secretly induced me to say: »We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.«
11 Então subornaram alguns homens para dizerem: "Ouvimos Estêvão falar palavras blasfemas contra Moisés e contra Deus".
12 They stirred up the people, the elders and the scribes, and pursued him. They caught him and brought him to the council.
12 Com isso agitaram o povo, os líderes religiosos e os mestres da lei. E, prendendo Estêvão, levaram-no ao Sinédrio.
13 They brought false witnesses, which said: »This man will not stop speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law.
13 Ali apresentaram falsas testemunhas que diziam: "Este homem não pára de falar contra este lugar santo e contra a lei.
14 »We heard him say: This Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.«
14 Pois o ouvimos dizer que esse Jesus, o Nazareno, destruirá este lugar e mudará os costumes que Moisés nos legou".
15 All who sat in the council looked intently at him and saw his face was like the face of an angel.
15 Olhando para ele, todos os que estavam sentados no Sinédrio viram que o seu rosto parecia o rosto de um anjo.
