1 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,
1 Semelhantemente, vós, esposas, estejam sujeitas aos vossos próprios maridos; para que também, se alguns não obedecem à palavra, possam sem palavra ser ganhos pelo comportamento de suas esposas,
2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.

3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.

4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.
4 Mas que seja o homem interior no coração; o qual não se corrompe, e ainda o ornamento de um espírito manso e quieto, que aos olhos de Deus tem um alto preço.
5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands,
5 Porque desta maneira, antigamente, as santas mulheres também, que confiavam em Deus, adornavam-se, estando sujeitas aos seus próprios maridos.
6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
6 Assim como Sara obedecia a Abraão, chamando-lhe senhor; da qual vós sois filhas, contanto que façam o bem, e não tenham medo de nenhum espanto.
7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
7 Igualmente vós, maridos, coabitai com elas de acordo com o conhecimento, dando honra à mulher, como ao vaso mais frágil; como sendo coerdeiras da graça da vida; para que as vossas orações não sejam impedidas.
8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
8 Finalmente, sede todos de uma só mente, tendo compaixão uns dos outros, amai como irmãos, sede compassivos, sede atenciosos.
9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
9 Não retribuindo mal por mal, ou injúria por injúria; mas, ao contrário, bênção; sabendo que para isto fostes chamados, para que possais herdar uma bênção.
10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.
10 Porque aquele que deseja amar a vida, e contemplar dias bons, que refreie a sua língua do mal, e seus lábios para que não falem maliciosamente.
11 They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.
11 Aparte-se do mal, e faça o bem; que busque a paz, e siga-a.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." [^1]
12 Porque os olhos do Senhor estão sobre os justos, e os seus ouvidos abertos às suas orações; mas a face do Senhor é contra aqueles que fazem o mal.
13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?
13 E quem vos fará mal, se fordes seguidores daquilo que é bom?
14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear their threats "; do not be frightened." [^3]
14 Mas se sofrerdes por amor da justiça, felizes sois vós, e não temais o terror deles, nem fiqueis perturbados.
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
15 Porém, santificai ao Senhor Deus em vossos corações; e estai sempre preparados para responder a cada homem que vos pedir a razão da esperança que há em vós, com mansidão e temor.
16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.
16 Tendo uma boa consciência, para que, enquanto falam mal de vós, como de malfeitores, fiquem envergonhados por acusar falsamente a sua boa conversação em Cristo.
17 For it is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
17 Porque melhor é, se Deus assim o quiser, que sofrais por fazer o bem do que por fazer o mal.
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.
18 Porque Cristo também uma vez padeceu pelos pecados, o justo pelos injustos, para que nos levasse a Deus; sendo colocado à morte na carne, mas vivificado pelo Espírito.
19 After being made alive, "he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits —
19 Pelo qual também foi, e pregou aos espíritos em prisão;
20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,
20 os quais em outro tempo foram desobedientes, quando a longanimidade de Deus esperava nos dias de Noé, enquanto se preparava a arca; na qual poucas, isto é, oito almas foram salvas pela água.
21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also —not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. "It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
21 Tal como esta figura, agora, também, o batismo nos salva, não do despojamento da imundície da carne, mas a resposta de uma boa consciência para com Deus, pela ressurreição de Jesus Cristo;
22 who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand —with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.
22 o qual subiu ao céu, e está à destra de Deus; anjos e autoridades e poderes foram-lhe sujeitados.
