1 Now I Paul, myself, appeal to you by the humble-heartedness and selflessness of Christ - Paul who "in your presence is humble, but bold enough when he is absent" -
1 Agora eu, Paulo, apelo a vocês com a mansidão e a bondade de Cristo, mesmo ciente de que vocês me consideram fraco pessoalmente e duro apenas a distância, quando lhes escrevo.
2 I beseech you, and I say, do not make me show my boldness, when I come in the boldness with which I think I shall show my courage against some who think that I am walking on the low level of the flesh.
2 Pois bem, suplico-lhes que, quando eu for visitá-los, não precise ser duro com aqueles que pensam que agimos segundo motivações humanas.
3 Though I do walk on the low level of the flesh, I do not make war as the flesh does;
3 Embora sejamos humanos, não lutamos conforme os padrões humanos.
4 for the weapons of my warfare are not weapons of the flesh, but mighty for God, in pulling down all fortresses.
4 Usamos as armas poderosas de Deus, e não as armas do mundo, para derrubar as fortalezas do raciocínio humano e acabar com os falsos argumentos.
5 For I pull down imaginations and every crag that lifts itself against the knowledge of God. And I carry every thought away into captivity and subjection to Christ;
5 Destruímos todas as opiniões arrogantes que impedem as pessoas de conhecer a Deus. Levamos cativo todo pensamento rebelde e o ensinamos a obedecer a Cristo.
6 and I am fully prepared to punish every act of disobedience, when once your submission has been put beyond question.
6 E, depois que vocês se tornarem inteiramente obedientes, estaremos prontos para punir todos que insistirem em desobedecer.
7 Look these facts in the face. If any man is fully persuaded as regards himself that he belongs to Christ, let him consider again with himself, that just as he is Christs, so also am I.
7 Vocês se preocupam apenas com o que é aparente. Aqueles que afirmam pertencer a Cristo devem reconhecer que pertencemos a Cristo tanto quanto eles.
8 If, however, I were to boast more loudly concerning the authority which the Lord gave me (not to cast you down, but to build you up), I should have no cause for shame.
8 Pode parecer que estou me orgulhando além do que deveria da autoridade que o Senhor nos deu, mas nossa autoridade visa edificar vocês, e não destruí-los. Portanto, não me envergonharei de usá-la.
9 Let it not seem as if I were overawing you with my letters.
9 Não é minha intenção assustar vocês com minhas cartas.
10 "His letters indeed," says one, "are mighty and forcible, but his personality is weak, and his speech contemptible."
10 Pois alguns dizem: “As cartas de Paulo são exigentes e enérgicas, mas em pessoa ele é fraco e seus discursos de nada valem”.
11 Let such a man assure himself that my actions, when I am present, will be just like my words in my letters when I am absent.
11 Essa gente deveria perceber que, quando estivermos presentes em pessoa, nossas ações serão tão enérgicas quanto aquilo que dizemos a distância, em nossas cartas.
12 I have not indeed the audacity to class myself among, or compare myself with, certain of the self-commenders; yet they are not wise in measuring themselves by one another and in comparing themselves with one another.
12 Não nos atreveríamos a nos classificar como esses indivíduos nem a nos comparar com eles, que se julgam tão importantes. Ao se compararem apenas uns com os outros, usando a si mesmos como medida, só mostram como são ignorantes.
13 I, however, will not indulge in undue boasting, but will confine it within the limits of the sphere to which God has assigned me - a sphere which reaches even to you.
13 Não nos orgulharemos do que se fez fora de nosso campo de autoridade. Antes, nos orgulharemos apenas do que aconteceu dentro dos limites da obra que Deus nos confiou, que inclui nosso trabalho com vocês.
14 For I am not overstepping the limits of my authority, as though I reached you not; since I have already come even as far as Corinth to proclaim the gospel of Christ.
14 Quando afirmamos ter autoridade sobre vocês, não ultrapassamos esses limites, pois fomos os primeiros a chegar até vocês com as boas-novas de Cristo.
15 I am not "boasting beyond measure in the labors of others," but it is my hope that, as your faith goes on increasing among yourselves, by the enlargement of my appointed limits,
15 Também não nos orgulhamos do trabalho realizado por outros nem assumimos o crédito por ele. Pelo contrário, esperamos que sua fé cresça de tal modo que se ampliem os limites de nosso trabalho entre vocês.
16 I may carry the gospel to countries beyond you; and not be boasting of work made ready to my hand within another mans limit.
16 Então poderemos anunciar as boas-novas em outros lugares, para além de sua região, onde ninguém esteja trabalhando. Assim, ninguém pensará que estamos nos orgulhando do trabalho feito em território de outros.
17 Meanwhile. Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.
17 Como dizem as Escrituras: “Quem quiser orgulhar-se, orgulhe-se somente no Senhor”.
18 For a man is proved worthy, not by his self-commendation, but when he is commended by the Lord.
18 Quando alguém elogia a si mesmo, esse elogio não tem valor algum. O importante mesmo é ser aprovado pelo Senhor.
