1 And it came to pass in the month Nissan, in the twentieth year of king Artaxerxes, that wine stood before him; and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. But I had never been sad in his presence.
1 No vigésimo ano do rei Artaxerxes, no mês de Nisã, estando o vinho diante de mim, tomei-o e o ofereci ao rei. Ora, jamais em outra ocasião, eu estivera triste em sua presença.
2 Then said the king unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing but an illness of heart. Then was I very greatly afraid.
2 Disse-me o rei: Por que tens a face sombria? Não estás doente! Tens no entanto algum dissabor!
3 And I said unto the king, May the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers sepulchres, lieth ruined, and her gates are consumed by fire?
3 Muito conturbado respondi ao rei: Viva o rei para sempre! Como não haveria eu de estar pesaroso, desde que a cidade onde se encontram os túmulos de meus pais está devastada e suas portas consumidas pelo fogo?
4 Then said the king unto me, For what then dost thou make request? Then did I pray to the God of heaven.
4 Disse-me o rei: Que tens a me pedir?
5 And I said unto the king, If it seem good to the king, and if thy servant might be pleasing in thy presence, I desire that thou wouldst send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers sepulchres, that I may build it.
5 Então, fazendo uma prece ao Deus do céu, eu disse ao rei: Se aprouver ao rei, e se o teu servo te é agradável, permite-me ir para a terra de Judá, à cidade onde se encontram os túmulos de meus pais, para reconstruí-la.
6 And the king said unto me, while the queen was sitting beside him, When is thy journey to be undertaken? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to let me go; and I indicated to him a time.
6 O rei, junto de quem estava sentada a rainha, perguntou-me: Quanto tempo durará tua viagem? Quando voltarás? Ele consentiu que eu partisse, logo que lhe fixei certo prazo.
7 And I said unto the king, If it seem good to the king, let letters be given unto me for the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till the time that I come into Judah;
7 Prossegui: Se o rei achar bom, que me dêem missivas para os governadores de além do rio, a fim de que me deixem passar para Judá;
8 Also a letter unto Assaph the keeper of the kings forests, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress which appertaineth to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall move into. And the king gave them to me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
8 e uma outra carta para Asaf, o intendente da floresta real, para que ele me forneça a madeira para a viga das portas da fortaleza vizinha ao templo, para as muralhas da cidade e para a casa em que eu habitar. O rei concordou com o meu pedido, porque a mão favorável de meu Deus estava comigo.
9 And so came I to the governors beyond the river, and I gave them the kings letters. Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.
9 Fui ter com os governadores de além do rio e entreguei-lhes as cartas do rei; ora, o rei fizera-me escoltar por alguns chefes militares e cavaleiros.
10 When Sanballat the Choronite, and Tobiyah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it displeased them exceedingly, that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.
10 Mas, quando Sanabalat, o horonita, e Tobias, o servo amonita, foram informados disso, ficaram grandemente despeitados por ter chegado um homem que procurava o bem dos filhos de Israel.
11 So came I to Jerusalem, and remained there three days.
11 Cheguei a Jerusalém e, depois de ter passado ali três dias,
12 Then arose I in the night, I and some few men with me; but I had not told any man what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem: nor was there any beast with me, save the beast on which I rode.
12 levantei-me durante a noite acompanhado de um pequeno grupo de homens, sem dizer a ninguém o que o meu Deus me inspirara fazer por Jerusalém. Não tinha comigo outro animal, senão aquele em que montava.
13 And I went out through the gate of the valley by night, even toward the direction of the dragonwell, and to the dunggate; and I was viewing the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates whereof were consumed by fire.
13 Saí à noite pela porta do Vale, e dirigi-me à fonte do Dragão e à porta da Esterqueira; verifiquei que as muralhas de Jerusalém estavam arruinadas e que as portas estavam consumidas pelo fogo.
14 Then passed I on to the gate of the fountain, and to the kings pool; but there was no space for the beast that was under me to pass through.
14 Prossegui rumo à porta da Fonte e à piscina do Rei; mas não havia ali lugar para passagem com a minha montaria.
15 Then went I up through the valley in the night, and I was viewing the wall, and I returned and entered through the gate of the valley, and so returned home.
15 Subi então à noite ao barranco, examinei a muralha, retomei em seguida o mesmo caminho e reentrei pela porta do Vale.
16 And the rulers knew not whither I was gone, or what I was doing: nor had I as yet told it to the Jews, and to the priests, and to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the superintendents of the work.
16 Os magistrados ignoravam onde eu tinha ido e o que queria fazer. Até aquele momento, eu nada havia deixado transparecer, nem aos Judeus, nem aos sacerdotes, nem aos homens importantes, nem aos magistrados, nem às demais pessoas do povo que se ocupavam dos trabalhos.
17 Then said I unto them, Ye see the misery in which we are, how Jerusalem lieth in ruins, and its gates are burnt with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no more be for a reproach.
17 Disse-lhes então: Vede a miséria em que estamos; Jerusalém devastada, suas portas consumidas pelo fogo! Vinde; reconstruamos as muralhas da cidade e ponhamos termo a esta humilhante situação.
18 And I told them of the hand of my God, which was good upon me, as also the kings words which he had spoken unto me. And they said, We will rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for the good work.
18 Contei-lhes em seguida como a mão de meu Deus me favorecera e narrei-lhes tudo o que dissera o rei. Gritaram todos: Vamos! Reconstruamos! E com coragem puseram-se a trabalhar nessa boa obra.
19 But when Sanballat the Choronite, and Tobiyah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye are doing? are ye rebelling against the king?
19 Quando Sanabalat, o horonita, Tobias, o servo amonita, e Gossem, o árabe, souberam disso, zombaram de nós e diziam num tom de desprezo: Que estais fazendo? Quereis revoltar-vos contra o rei?
20 And I returned them an answer, and said unto them, The God of heaven will indeed give us prosperity, and we his servants will truly rise up and build; but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
20 Respondi-lhes: O próprio Deus do céu é quem nos fará triunfar. Nós somos seus servos, e vamos reconstruir. Quanto a vós, não tendes parte, nem direito, nem lembrança em Jerusalém.
