1 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, Not any of us shall give his daughter unto Benjamin for wife.
1 Ora, haviam jurado os homens de Israel em Mispa, dizendo: Nenhum de nós dará sua filha por mulher aos benjamitas.
2 And the people came to Bethel, and abode there till the evening, before God, and they lifted up their voices, and wept with a great lamentation;
2 Veio o povo a Betel, e ali ficaram até à tarde diante de Deus, e levantaram a voz, e prantearam com grande pranto.
3 And they said, Wherefore, O Lord, God of Israel, is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be lacking this day out of Israel one tribe?
3 Disseram: Ah! Senhor , Deus de Israel, por que sucedeu isto em Israel, que, hoje, lhe falte uma tribo?
4 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burntofferings and peaceofferings.
4 Ao dia seguinte, o povo, pela manhã, se levantou e edificou ali um altar; e apresentaram holocaustos e ofertas pacíficas.
5 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the Lord? For there had been taken the great oath concerning him that came not up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
5 Disseram os filhos de Israel: Quem de todas as tribos de Israel não subiu à assembleia do Senhor ? Porque se tinha feito um grande juramento acerca do que não viesse ao Senhor a Mispa, que dizia: Será morto.
6 And the children of Israel felt regret for Benjamin their brother, and they said, One tribe hath this day been cut down from Israel.
6 Os filhos de Israel tiveram compaixão de seu irmão Benjamim e disseram: Foi, hoje, eliminada uma tribo de Israel.
7 What shall we do as respecteth wives for those that remain, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will give none of our daughters unto them for wives?
7 Como obteremos mulheres para os restantes deles, pois juramos, pelo Senhor , que das nossas filhas não lhes daríamos por mulheres?
8 And they said, what one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto the Lord to Mizpah? And, behold, there had not come to the camp a man from Yabeshgilad to the assembly.
8 E disseram: Há alguma das tribos de Israel que não tenha subido ao Senhor a Mispa? E eis que ninguém de Jabes-Gileade viera ao acampamento, à assembleia.
9 For the people were numbered, and, behold, there was not present a man of the inhabitants of Yabeshgilad.
9 Quando se contou o povo, eis que nenhum dos moradores de Jabes-Gileade se achou ali.
10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand persons of the valiant men, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Yabeshgilad with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.
10 Por isso, a congregação enviou lá doze mil homens dos mais valentes e lhes ordenou, dizendo: Ide e, a fio de espada, feri os moradores de Jabes-Gileade, e as mulheres, e as crianças.
11 And this is the thing that ye shall do, every male, and every woman that hath known man by lying with him, shall ye devote.
11 Isto é o que haveis de fazer: a todo homem e a toda mulher que se houver deitado com homem destruireis.
12 And they found among the inhabitants of Yabeshgilad four hundred young virgins that had not known man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
12 Acharam entre os moradores de Jabes-Gileade quatrocentas moças virgens, que não se deitaram com homem; e as trouxeram ao acampamento, a Siló, que está na terra de Canaã.
13 And the whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin that were on the rock Rimmon, and offered them peace.
13 Toda a congregação, pois, enviou mensageiros aos filhos de Benjamim que estavam na penha Rimom, e lhes proclamaram a paz.
14 And Benjamin returned at that time: and they gave unto them the wives whom they had saved alive out of the women of Yabeshgilad; but they found not sufficient for them in this way.
14 Nesse mesmo tempo, voltaram os benjamitas; e se lhes deram por mulheres as que foram conservadas com vida, das de Jabes-Gileade; porém estas ainda não lhes bastaram.
15 And the people felt regret for Benjamin; because that the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
15 Então, o povo teve compaixão de Benjamim, porquanto o Senhor tinha feito brecha nas tribos de Israel.
16 And the elders of the congregation said, What shall we do for those that remain as respecteth wives; because the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin?
16 Disseram os anciãos da congregação: Como obteremos mulheres para os restantes ainda, pois foram exterminadas as mulheres dos benjamitas?
17 And they said, Their inheritance must be secured for Benjamin, that not a tribe may be blotted out from Israel.
17 Disseram mais: A herança dos que ficaram de resto não na deve perder Benjamim, visto que nenhuma tribo de Israel deve ser destruída.
18 Nevertheless we ourselves are not able to give them wives of our daughters; for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.
18 Porém nós não lhes poderemos dar mulheres de nossas filhas, porque os filhos de Israel juraram, dizendo: Maldito o que der mulher aos benjamitas.
19 And they said, Behold, there is a feast of the Lord in Shiloh from year to year at a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.
19 Então, disseram: Eis que, de ano em ano, há solenidade do Senhor em Siló, que se celebra para o norte de Betel, do lado do nascente do sol, pelo caminho alto que sobe de Betel a Siquém e para o sul de Lebona.
20 And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go ye and lie in wait in the vineyards;
20 Ordenaram aos filhos de Benjamim, dizendo: Ide, e emboscai-vos nas vinhas,
21 And look out, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh go out to dance in dances: then come ye forth out of the vineyards, and snatch you every man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go then to the land of Benjamin.
21 e olhai; e eis aí, saindo as filhas de Siló a dançar em rodas, saí vós das vinhas, e arrebatai, dentre elas, cada um sua mulher, e ide-vos à terra de Benjamim.
22 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to contend with us, that we will say unto them, Be favorable unto them for our sakes; because we took not for each man his wife in the war; and because ye yourselves did not give them unto them, that ye should at this time be guilty.
22 Quando seus pais ou seus irmãos vierem queixar-se a nós, nós lhes diremos: por amor de nós, tende compaixão deles, pois, na guerra contra Jabes-Gileade, não obtivemos mulheres para cada um deles; e também não lhes destes, pois neste caso ficaríeis culpados.
23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took themselves wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they had stolen away; and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and rebuilt the cities, and dwelt in them.
23 Assim fizeram os filhos de Benjamim e levaram mulheres conforme o número deles, das que arrebataram das rodas que dançavam; e foram-se, voltaram à sua herança, reedificaram as cidades e habitaram nelas.
24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.
24 Então, os filhos de Israel também partiram dali, cada um para a sua tribo, para a sua família e para a sua herança.
25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did what was right in his own eyes.
25 Naqueles dias, não havia rei em Israel; cada um fazia o que achava mais reto.
