1 Now Yiphthach the Gil’adite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gil’ad had begotten Yiphthach.
1 Jefté era um guerreiro corajoso. Era filho de Gileade, mas sua mãe era uma prostituta.
2 And the wife of Gil’ad also bore him sons; and when the sons of the wife were grown up, they drove away Yiphthach, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in the house of our father: for the son of another woman art thou.
2 A esposa de Gileade teve muitos filhos, e quando esses meios-irmãos cresceram, expulsaram Jefté, dizendo: “Você não receberá parte alguma da herança de nosso pai, pois é filho de outra mulher”.
3 And Yiphthach fled away from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and there gathered themselves to Yiphthach idle men, and they went out with him.
3 Então Jefté fugiu de seus irmãos e foi viver na terra de Tobe. Em pouco tempo, passou a chefiar um bando de desocupados que se uniram a ele.
4 And it came to pass after some time, that the children of ‘Ammon made war against Israel.
4 Por essa época, os amonitas começaram a guerrear contra Israel.
5 And it was so, when the children of ‘Ammon made war against Israel, that the elders of Gil’ad went to fetch Yiphthach out of the land of Tob.
5 Quando os amonitas atacaram, os líderes de Gileade mandaram buscar Jefté na terra de Tobe.
6 And they said unto Yiphthach, Come, and become a leader unto us, that we may fight with the children of ‘Ammon.
6 “Venha e seja nosso comandante!”, disseram. “Ajude-nos a lutar contra os amonitas!”
7 And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil’ad, Did ye not hate me, and drive me away out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now, when ye are in distress?
7 Mas Jefté lhes disse: “Não são vocês os mesmos que me odiavam e que me expulsaram da casa de meu pai? Por que me chamam agora que estão em apuros?”.
8 And the elders of Gil’ad said unto Yiphthach, Therefore are we now come back to thee, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of ‘Ammon; and thou shalt become unto us a head, unto all the inhabitants of Gil’ad.
8 “Porque precisamos de você”, responderam os líderes. “Se você nos comandar na batalha contra os amonitas, nós o proclamaremos governante de todo o povo de Gileade.”
9 And Yiphthach said unto the elders of Gil’ad, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of ‘Ammon, and the Lord give them up before me, shall I remain your head?
9 Jefté lhes disse: “Quer dizer que se eu for com vocês e o S enhor me der a vitória sobre os amonitas, governarei todo o povo?”.
10 And the elders of Gil’ad said unto Yiphthach, The Lord shall be a hearer between us, if we do not so according to thy word.
10 Os líderes de Gileade responderam: “O S enhor é nossa testemunha de que faremos exatamente como você disse”.
11 Then went Yiphthach with the elders of Gil’ad, and the people appointed him over them as head and as leader; and Yiphthach spoke all his words before the Lord in Mitzpah.
11 Então Jefté foi com os líderes de Gileade, e o povo o fez governante e comandante do exército. Em Mispá, na presença do S enhor , Jefté repetiu o que tinha dito aos líderes.
12 And Yiphthach sent messengers unto the king of the children of ‘Ammon, saying, What have I to do with thee, that thou art come unto me to fight against my land?
12 Jefté enviou mensageiros ao rei de Amom para perguntar: “Por que você saiu para guerrear contra minha terra?”.
13 And the king of the children of ‘Ammon said unto the messengers of Yiphthach, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and unto the Jordan: and now restore these lands again in peace.
13 O rei de Amom respondeu aos mensageiros de Jefté: “Quando saíram do Egito, os israelitas roubaram minhas terras desde o rio Arnom até o rio Jaboque, e até o Jordão. Agora, devolva-nos pacificamente esse território”.
14 And Yiphthach again sent messengers unto the king of the children of ‘Ammon;
14 Jefté enviou a seguinte mensagem em resposta ao rei amonita:
15 And he said unto him, Thus hath said Yiphthach, Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of ‘Ammon;
15 “Assim diz Jefté: Israel não roubou terra alguma de Moabe nem de Amom.
16 For when they came up out of Egypt, Israel walked through the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;
16 Quando o povo de Israel veio do Egito e chegou a Cades, depois de atravessar o mar Vermelho,
17 And Israel then sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass, I pray thee, through thy land; but the king of Edom would not hearken; and also to the king of Moab they sent; but he would not consent: and Israel remained in Kadesh.
17 enviou mensageiros ao rei de Edom e pediu: ‘Deixe-nos passar por sua terra’. Contudo, seu pedido foi negado. Então fizeram o mesmo pedido ao rei de Moabe, mas ele também não os deixou passar. Por isso, o povo de Israel ficou em Cades.
18 Then they wandered through the wilderness, and traveled round the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came from the rising of the sun to the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon: but they came not within the border of Moab; for the Arnon is the boundary of Moab.
18 “Depois, passaram pelo deserto, contornando Edom e Moabe. Acompanharam a divisa de Moabe a leste e acamparam do outro lado do rio Arnom. Em momento algum atravessaram o Arnom para entrar em Moabe, pois o Arnom era a divisa de Moabe.
19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sichon the king of the Emorites, the king of Cheshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land unto my place.
19 “Então Israel enviou mensageiros a Seom, rei dos amorreus, que governava em Hesbom, e pediu: ‘Deixe-nos passar por sua terra, para chegarmos ao nosso destino’.
20 But Sichon trusted not Israel to let them pass through his territory; and Sichon assembled all his people, and encamped in Yahaz, and fought against Israel.
20 O rei Seom, porém, não confiava em Israel o suficiente para deixar o povo passar por seu território. Em vez disso, mobilizou seu exército em Jaza e atacou Israel.
21 and the Lord the God of Israel delivered Sichon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them; and Israel took possession of all the land of the Emorites, the inhabitants of that country.
21 Mas o S enhor , o Deus de Israel, entregou o rei Seom nas mãos de seu povo, que derrotou os amorreus. Israel tomou posse de toda a terra dos amorreus que viviam naquela região,
22 And they took possession of all the territory of the Emorites, from the Arnon even unto the Yabbok, and from the wilderness even unto the Jordan.
22 desde o Arnom até o Jaboque, e desde o deserto até o Jordão.
23 So now the Lord the God of Israel hath dispossessed the Emorites from before his people Israel, and shouldst thou possess it?
23 “Como você vê, foi o S enhor , o Deus de Israel, que tirou a terra dos amorreus e a entregou a Israel. Por que, então, haveríamos de devolvê-la?
24 Truly! that which Kemosh thy god may give thee to possess, even that canst thou possess; but whatsoever the Lord our God hath driven out from before us, even that will we possess.
24 Fique com o que seu deus Camos lhe der, e nós ficaremos com o que o S enhor , nosso Deus, nos der.
25 And now art thou then any better than Balak the son of Zippor, the king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
25 Acaso você é melhor que Balaque, filho de Zipor, rei de Moabe? Ele tentou disputar esses territórios com Israel? Entrou em guerra contra os israelitas?
26 And while Israel hath dwelt in Cheshbon and in its towns, and in ‘Ar’or and in its towns, and in all the cities that are along the margins of the Arnon, three hundred years: why did ye not recover them within that time?
26 “Israel vive aqui há trezentos anos. Habita em Hesbom e nos povoados ao redor, até Aroer e seus povoados, e todas as cidades às margens do rio Arnom. Por que, até agora, vocês não fizeram esforço algum para reaver esse território?
27 Whereas I myself have not sinned against thee, and thou doest me wrong to war against me: may the Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the children of Israel and the children of ‘Ammon.
27 Portanto, não pequei contra você. Pelo contrário, você fez mal ao me atacar. Que o S enhor , o Juiz, decida hoje qual de nós está certo: Israel ou Amom”.
28 Nevertheless the king of the children of ‘Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Yiphthach which he had sent to him.
28 Mas o rei de Amom não deu atenção à mensagem de Jefté.
29 Then came upon Yiphthach the spirit of the Lord, and he passed through Gil’ad and Menasseh, and passed through Mitzpeh of Gil’ad, and from Mitzpeh of Gil’ad he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
29 Então o Espírito do S enhor veio sobre Jefté. Ele atravessou o território de Gileade e Manassés, incluindo Mispá em Gileade, e dali avançou contra os amonitas.
30 And Yiphthach made a vow unto the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of ‘Ammon into my hand,
30 Jefté fez um voto ao S enhor : “Se entregares os amonitas em minhas mãos,
31 Then shall it be, that whatsoever cometh forth out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of ‘Ammon, shall belong to the Lord, and I will offer it up for a burnt–offering.
31 darei ao S enhor o que sair primeiro de minha casa quando eu regressar vitorioso. Eu o oferecerei como holocausto”.
32 So Yiphthach passed over unto the children of ‘Ammon to fight against them: and the Lord delivered them into his hand.
32 Jefté saiu com seu exército para combater os amonitas, e o S enhor os entregou em suas mãos.
33 And he smote them from ‘Aro’er, even till thou comest to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto Abel–keramin, with a very great defeat; and the children of ‘Ammon were humbled before the children of Israel.
33 Ele aniquilou os amonitas e destruiu vinte cidades, desde Aroer até os arredores de Minite, chegando até Abel-Queramim. Assim, os israelitas derrotaram os amonitas.
34 And Yiphthach came to Mizpah unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his sole child; he had beside her neither son nor daughter.
34 Quando Jefté voltou para casa em Mispá, sua filha saiu ao seu encontro, tocando tamborim e dançando. Era sua única filha; ele não tinha nenhum outro filho nem filha.
35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast bent me down very low, and thou art one of those that trouble me; for I have opened my mouth unto the Lord, and I cannot go back.
35 Quando Jefté a viu, rasgou as próprias roupas e gritou. “Ah, minha filha! Você acabou comigo! Trouxe desgraça sobre mim! Fiz um voto ao S enhor e não posso voltar atrás!”.
36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the Lord, do to me in accordance with what hath proceeded out of thy mouth; since the Lord hath taken vengeance for thee on thy enemies, on the children of ‘Ammon.
36 Ela disse: “Pai, se fez um voto ao S enhor , faça comigo o que prometeu, pois o S enhor lhe deu grande vitória sobre seus inimigos, os amonitas.
37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: Let me alone two months, that I may descend to the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I with my companions.
37 Mas, primeiro, permita que eu ande pelos montes e chore com minhas amigas por dois meses, pois morrerei virgem”.
38 And he aid, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains.
38 “Pode ir”, disse Jefté, e deixou que ela se ausentasse por dois meses. Ela e suas amigas foram para os montes e lamentaram, pois ela jamais teria filhos.
39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, and he fulfilled on her his vow which he had vowed; and she knew no man; and it became a custom in Israel,
39 Quando ela voltou para casa, seu pai cumpriu o voto que havia feito, e ela morreu sem ter tido relações com homem algum. Por isso, tornou-se costume em Israel
40 That the daughters of Israel went from year to year to lament for the daughter of Yiphthach the Gil’adite four days in the year.
40 as moças israelitas saírem por quatro dias todos os anos para lamentar o destino da filha de Jefté, de Gileade.
