1 And Joshua, the son of Nun, had sent out from Shittim two men as spies, secretly, saying, Go ye, view the land and especially Jericho; and they went, and came unto the house of a woman, a harlot, whose name was Rachab, and they lodged there.
1 E Josué, filho de Num, enviou secretamente, de Sitim, dois homens a espiar, dizendo: Ide reconhecer a terra e a Jericó. Foram, pois, e entraram na casa de uma mulher prostituta, cujo nome era Raabe, e dormiram ali.
2 And it was told unto the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, men came in hither this night, of the children of Israel, to search out the country.
2 Então deu-se notícia ao rei de Jericó, dizendo: Eis que esta noite vieram aqui uns homens dos filhos de Israel, para espiar a terra.
3 And the king of Jericho sent to Rachab, saying, Bring forth the men who are come to thee, who came to thy house; for, to search out all the country are they come.
3 Por isso mandou o rei de Jericó dizer a Raabe: Tira fora os homens que vieram a ti e entraram na tua casa, porque vieram espiar toda a terra.
4 But the woman had taken the two men, and hidden them; and she said, It is true, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were.
4 Porém aquela mulher tomou os dois homens, e os escondeu, e disse: É verdade que vieram homens a mim, porém eu não sabia de onde eram.
5 And it came to pass, about the time of shutting the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; I know not whither the men are gone: pursue quickly after them, for ye can overtake them.
5 E aconteceu que, havendo-se de fechar a porta, sendo já escuro, aqueles homens saíram; não sei para onde aqueles homens se foram; ide após eles depressa, porque os alcançareis.
6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and had hidden them among the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
6 Porém ela os tinha feito subir ao eirado, e os tinha escondido entre as canas do linho, que pusera em ordem sobre o eirado.
7 And the men pursued after them, by the way to the Jordan unto the fords; and the gate was closed, as soon as those who pursued after them were gone out.
7 E foram-se aqueles homens após eles pelo caminho do Jordão, até aos vaus; e, havendo eles saído, fechou-se a porta.
8 But they had not yet laid themselves down, when she came up unto them upon the roof.
8 E, antes que eles dormissem, ela subiu a eles no eirado;
9 And she said unto them, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that the terror of you hath fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land are become fainthearted, because of you.
9 E disse aos homens: Bem sei que o Senhor vos deu esta terra e que o pavor de vós caiu sobre nós, e que todos os moradores da terra estão desfalecidos diante de vós.
10 For we have heard, how that the Lord dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you, when ye went forth out of Egypt; and what ye have done unto the two kings of the Emorites, who were on the other side of the Jordan, unto Sichon and Og, whom ye have utterly destroyed.
10 Porque temos ouvido que o Senhor secou as águas do Mar Vermelho diante de vós, quando saíeis do Egito, e o que fizestes aos dois reis dos amorreus, a Siom e a Ogue, que estavam além do Jordão, os quais destruístes.
11 And when we heard this, our heart melted, and there remained not any more courage in any man, because of you; for the Lord your God is alone God in the heavens above, and upon the earth beneath.
11 O que ouvindo, desfaleceu o nosso coração, e em ninguém mais há ânimo algum, por causa da vossa presença; porque o Senhor vosso Deus é Deus em cima nos céus e em baixo na terra.
12 And now swear, I pray you, unto me by the Lord, because I have shown you kindness, that ye will also, for your part, show kindness, unto my fathers house; and give me a sure token,
12 Agora, pois, jurai-me, vos peço, pelo Senhor, que, como usei de misericórdia convosco, vós também usareis de misericórdia para com a casa de meu pai, e dai-me um sinal seguro,
13 That ye will preserve the life of my father, and my mother, and my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
13 De que conservareis com a vida a meu pai e a minha mãe, como também a meus irmãos e a minhas irmãs, com tudo o que têm e de que livrareis as nossas vidas da morte.
14 And the men said unto her, Our life shall be doomed to death instead of yours, if ye tell not this our business; and it shall be, when the Lord giveth us the land, that we will show thee kindness and truth.
14 Então aqueles homens responderam-lhe: A nossa vida responderá pela vossa até à morte, se não denunciardes este nosso negócio, e será, pois, que, dando-nos o Senhor esta terra, usaremos contigo de misericórdia e de fidelidade.
15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was within the town wall, and within the wall she dwelt.
15 Ela então os fez descer por uma corda pela janela, porquanto a sua casa estava sobre o muro da cidade, e ela morava sobre o muro.
16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet with you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned; and afterward ye may go your way.
16 E disse-lhes: Ide-vos ao monte, para que, porventura, não vos encontrem os perseguidores, e escondei-vos lá três dias, até que voltem os perseguidores, e depois ide pelo vosso caminho.
17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thy oath which thou hast caused us to swear.
17 E, disseram-lhe aqueles homens: Desobrigados seremos deste juramento que nos fizeste jurar.
18 Behold, when we come into the land, this line of scarlet thread shalt thou bind in the window by which thou hast let us down; and thy father, and thy mother, and thy brothers, and all thy fathers household, thou must bring together unto thee into the house.
18 Eis que, quando nós entrarmos na terra, atarás este cordão de fio de escarlata à janela por onde nos fizeste descer; e recolherás em casa contigo a teu pai, e a tua mãe, e a teus irmãos e a toda a família de teu pai.
19 And it shall be, that whosoever will go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless; and whosoever will remain with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if a hand be laid upon him.
19 Será, pois, que qualquer que sair fora da porta da tua casa o seu sangue será sobre a sua cabeça, e nós seremos inocentes; mas qualquer que estiver contigo, em casa, o seu sangue seja sobre a nossa cabeça, se alguém nele puser mão.
20 And if thou tell this our business, then will we be free of thy oath which thou hast caused us to swear.
20 Porém, se tu denunciares este nosso negócio, seremos desobrigados do juramento que nos fizeste jurar.
21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it; and she dismissed them, and they departed; and she bound the scarlet line in the window.
21 E ela disse: Conforme as vossas palavras, assim seja. Então os despediu; e eles se foram; e ela atou o cordão de escarlata à janela.
22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and they remained there three days, until the pursuers were returned; and the pursuers sought throughout all the way, but found nothing.
22 Foram-se, pois, e chegaram ao monte, e ficaram ali três dias, até que voltaram os perseguidores, porque os perseguidores os buscaram por todo o caminho, porém não os acharam.
23 And the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and related to him all the things that had befallen them.
23 Assim aqueles dois homens voltaram, e desceram do monte, e passaram, e chegaram a Josué, filho de Num, e contaram-lhe tudo quanto lhes acontecera;
24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the Lord hath given up into our hand all the country; for all the inhabitants of the country are already become fainthearted because of us.
24 E disseram a Josué: Certamente o Senhor tem dado toda esta terra nas nossas mãos, pois até todos os moradores estão atemorizados diante de nós.
