1 And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
1 Veio a palavra do Senhor , segunda vez, a Jonas, dizendo:
2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim unto it the proclamation which I shall speak unto thee.
2 Dispõe-te, vai à grande cidade de Nínive e proclama contra ela a mensagem que eu te digo.
3 And Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a great city before God, a three days journey.
3 Levantou-se, pois, Jonas e foi a Nínive, segundo a palavra do Senhor . Ora, Nínive era cidade mui importante diante de Deus e de três dias para percorrê-la.
4 And Jonah began to go through the city one days journey, and he called out, and said, Yet forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
4 Começou Jonas a percorrer a cidade caminho de um dia, e pregava, e dizia: Ainda quarenta dias, e Nínive será subvertida.
5 And the men of Nineveh believed in God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
5 Os ninivitas creram em Deus, e proclamaram um jejum, e vestiram-se de panos de saco, desde o maior até o menor.
6 For when the matter was come unto the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, and put off his mantle from him, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat down on ashes.
6 Chegou esta notícia ao rei de Nínive; ele levantou-se do seu trono, tirou de si as vestes reais, cobriu-se de pano de saco e assentou-se sobre cinza.
7 And he caused to be proclaimed and he published through Nineveh, By the decree of the king and his chief men, it is said, Neither man nor beast, neither herds nor flocks, shall taste any thing; they shall not feed, nor drink water;
7 E fez-se proclamar e divulgar em Nínive: Por mandado do rei e seus grandes, nem homens, nem animais, nem bois, nem ovelhas provem coisa alguma, nem os levem ao pasto, nem bebam água;
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let men call unto God with might; and let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence which is in their hands.
8 mas sejam cobertos de pano de saco, tanto os homens como os animais, e clamarão fortemente a Deus; e se converterão, cada um do seu mau caminho e da violência que há nas suas mãos.
9 Who knoweth, but God may turn and bethink himself, and turn away from the fierceness of his anger, that we perish not?
9 Quem sabe se voltará Deus, e se arrependerá, e se apartará do furor da sua ira, de sorte que não pereçamos?
10 And God saw their works, that they had turned from their evil way: and God bethought himself of the evil, which he had spoken that he would do unto them, and he did it not.
10 Viu Deus o que fizeram, como se converteram do seu mau caminho; e Deus se arrependeu do mal que tinha dito lhes faria e não o fez.
