1 And it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib the king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and seized on them.
1 No décimo quarto ano do reinado de Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, atacou todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá e as conquistou.
2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a strong army. And he halted by the aqueduct of the upper pool on the highway of the washers field.
2 O rei da Assíria, que estava em Laquis, enviou Rabsaqué, com um grande exército, a Jerusalém, ao rei Ezequias. Ele parou na extremidade do aqueduto do tanque superior, junto ao caminho do campo do Lavandeiro.
3 Then came forth unto him Elyakim, the son of Chilkiyahu, who was superintendent over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Yoach the son of Assaph, the recorder.
3 Quem saiu ao encontro dele foram Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o responsável pelo palácio, Sebna, o escrivão, e Joá, filho de Asafe, o cronista.
4 And Rabshakeh said unto them,Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus hath said the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherewith thou hast trusted?
4 Rabsaqué disse: — Digam a Ezequias: “Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assíria: Que confiança é essa que você tem?
5 I have said, but it was only a word uttered with the lips, I have counsel and strength for the war. Now, on whom didst thou trust, that thou rebelledst against me?
5 Bem posso dizer que o seu conselho e o seu poder para a guerra são meras palavras. Em quem você está confiando, para que se rebele contra mim?
6 Behold, thou trustedst on yon cracked reedstaff, on Egypt; which, if a man lean on it, will enter into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh the king of Egypt to all that trust on him.
6 Você confia nesse bordão de caniço esmagado que é o Egito. Se alguém se apoiar no caniço, ele vai espetar e furar a mão. Assim é Faraó, rei do Egito, para todos os que nele confiam.
7 But if thou shouldst say to me, In the Lord our God have we trusted: is he not the one whose highplaces and whose altars Hezekiah hath removed, when he said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar shall ye prostrate yourselves?
7 Mas, se você me diz: ‘Confiamos no Senhor , nosso Deus’, eu pergunto: não é esse aquele cujos lugares altos e altares Ezequias removeu, dizendo a Judá e a Jerusalém que deveriam adorar somente diante do altar em Jerusalém?”
8 And now I pray thee, enter into a contest with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
8 — Agora, pois, comprometa-se com meu senhor, o rei da Assíria, e eu lhe darei dois mil cavalos, se você puder achar cavaleiros para montá-los.
9 How then wilt thou turn back the face of a single chieftain of the least of my masters servants, while thou hast put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
9 Como você poderia repelir um oficial do meu senhor, o rei, mesmo que seja um dos menores, e confiar no Egito para obter carros de guerra e cavaleiros?
10 And now am I come up without the Lords will against this land to destroy it? The Lord hath said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
10 E será que você pensa que é sem o consentimento do Senhor Deus que eu vim contra esta terra, para a destruir? Foi o próprio Senhor quem ordenou que eu atacasse esta terra e a destruísse.
11 Then said Elyakim and Shebna and Yoach unto Rabshakeh, Speak, we pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jewish language, before the ears of the people that are on the wall.
11 Então Eliaquim, Sebna e Joá disseram a Rabsaqué: — Por favor, fale com estes seus servos em aramaico, porque nós o entendemos. Não fale em hebraico, aos ouvidos do povo que está sobre a muralha.
12 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master then sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? is it not rather to the men who sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own excrements, and drink their own urine with you?
12 Mas Rabsaqué lhes respondeu: — Você pensa que o meu senhor me enviou para dizer estas palavras apenas a você e ao seu rei? Ele me enviou para falar também aos homens que estão sentados sobre a muralha e que, junto com vocês, terão de comer o seu próprio excremento e beber a sua própria urina!
13 Then stood Rabshakeh up, and called out in a loud voice in the Jewish language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
13 Então Rabsaqué se pôs em pé e gritou em hebraico: — Escutem as palavras do grande rei, o rei da Assíria.
14 Thus hath said the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you;
14 Assim diz o rei: “Não deixem que Ezequias os engane, pois ele não poderá livrá-los.
15 Neither let Hezekiah induce you to trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given up into the hand of the king of Assyria.
15 Não deixem que Ezequias os leve a confiar no Senhor , dizendo: ‘O Senhor certamente nos livrará, e esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assíria.’
16 Hearken not to Hezekiah; for thus hath said the king of Assyria, Make a treaty of peace with me, and come out to me; and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his figtree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern;
16 Não deem ouvidos a Ezequias. Porque assim diz o rei da Assíria: Façam as pazes comigo e se entreguem. Então cada um comerá da sua própria videira e da sua própria figueira, e beberá a água da sua própria cisterna,
17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
17 até que eu venha e os leve para uma terra como a de vocês, terra de cereal e de vinho, terra de pão e de vinhas.
18 So that Hezekiah may not mislead you, saying, The Lord will deliver us. Have the gods of the nations delivered each his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
18 Não deixem que Ezequias os engane, dizendo: ‘O Senhor nos livrará.’ Será que os deuses das nações puderam livrar, cada um a sua terra, das mãos do rei da Assíria?
19 Where are the gods of Chamath and Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvayim? and have they then delivered Samaria out of my hand?
19 Onde estão os deuses de Hamate e de Arpade? Onde estão os deuses de Sefarvaim? Será que eles livraram Samaria das minhas mãos?
20 Who are they among all the gods of these countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
20 De todos os deuses destes países, quais foram os que livraram a sua terra das minhas mãos? Então como o Senhor poderá livrar Jerusalém das minhas mãos?”
21 But they remained silent, and answered him not a word; for it was the kings command, saying, Ye shall not answer him.
21 Eles, porém, ficaram calados e não lhe responderam palavra, porque assim lhes havia ordenado o rei: “Não lhe respondam.”
22 Then came Elyakim the son of Chilkiyahu, that was superintendent over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Yoach the son of Assaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent; and they told him the words of Rabshakeh.
22 Então Eliaquim, filho de Hilquias, o responsável pelo palácio, e Sebna, o escrivão, e Joá, filho de Asafe, o cronista, voltaram para junto do rei Ezequias, com as suas roupas rasgadas, e lhe contaram o que Rabsaqué tinha dito.
