1 And Jacob went on his way, and there met him angels of God.
1 Também Jacó seguiu o seu caminho, e anjos de Deus lhe saíram a encontrá-lo.
2 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is a host of God; and he called the name of that place Machanayim.
2 Quando os viu, disse: Este é o acampamento de Deus. E chamou àquele lugar Maanaim.
3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
3 Então, Jacó enviou mensageiros adiante de si a Esaú, seu irmão, à terra de Seir, território de Edom,
4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord, to Esau, Thus hath said thy servant Jacob, With Laban have I sojourned, and stayed until now.
4 e lhes ordenou: Assim falareis a meu senhor Esaú: Teu servo Jacó manda dizer isto: Como peregrino morei com Labão, em cuja companhia fiquei até agora.
5 And I have acquired oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants; and I send now to tell my lord, to find grace in thy eyes.
5 Tenho bois, jumentos, rebanhos, servos e servas; mando comunicá-lo a meu senhor, para lograr mercê à sua presença.
6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother, to Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
6 Voltaram os mensageiros a Jacó, dizendo: Fomos a teu irmão Esaú; também ele vem de caminho para se encontrar contigo, e quatrocentos homens com ele.
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid, and he felt distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two bands.
7 Então, Jacó teve medo e se perturbou; dividiu em dois bandos o povo que com ele estava, e os rebanhos, e os bois, e os camelos.
8 And he said, If Esau should come to the one band and smite it, then the other band which is left may escape.
8 Pois disse: Se vier Esaú a um bando e o ferir, o outro bando escapará.
9 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy birthplace, and I will deal well with thee:
9 E orou Jacó: Deus de meu pai Abraão e Deus de meu pai Isaque, ó Senhor , que me disseste: Torna à tua terra e à tua parentela, e te farei bem;
10 I am not worthy of all the kindness, and of all the truth, which thou hast shown unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
10 sou indigno de todas as misericórdias e de toda a fidelidade que tens usado para com teu servo; pois com apenas o meu cajado atravessei este Jordão; já agora sou dois bandos.
11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, the mother with the children.
11 Livra-me das mãos de meu irmão Esaú, porque eu o temo, para que não venha ele matar-me e as mães com os filhos.
12 And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
12 E disseste: Certamente eu te farei bem e dar-te-ei a descendência como a areia do mar, que, pela multidão, não se pode contar.
13 And he lodged there that same night; and he took of that which he carried with him a present for Esau his brother:
13 E, tendo passado ali aquela noite, separou do que tinha um presente para seu irmão Esaú:
14 Two hundred shegoats, and twenty hegoats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams.
14 duzentas cabras e vinte bodes; duzentas ovelhas e vinte carneiros;
15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty cows, and ten bulls, twenty sheasses, and ten foals.
15 trinta camelas de leite com suas crias, quarenta vacas e dez touros; vinte jumentas e dez jumentinhos.
16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and he said unto his servants, Pass on before me, and put a space between drove and drove.
16 Entregou-os às mãos dos seus servos, cada rebanho à parte, e disse aos servos: Passai adiante de mim e deixai espaço entre rebanho e rebanho.
17 And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother should meet thee, and ask thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither art thou going? and for whom are these before thee?
17 Ordenou ao primeiro, dizendo: Quando Esaú, meu irmão, te encontrar e te perguntar: De quem és, para onde vais, de quem são estes diante de ti?
18 Then shalt thou say, They belong to thy servant, to Jacob; it is a present sent unto my lord, to Esau; and, behold, also, he is himself behind us.
18 Responderás: São de teu servo Jacó; é presente que ele envia a meu senhor Esaú; e eis que ele mesmo vem vindo atrás de nós.
19 And so he commanded also the second, also the third, as also all that followed the droves, saying, After this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
19 Ordenou também ao segundo, ao terceiro e a todos os que vinham conduzindo os rebanhos: Falareis desta maneira a Esaú, quando vos encontrardes com ele.
20 And say ye moreover, Behold, also thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will receive me kindly.
20 Direis assim: Eis que o teu servo Jacó vem vindo atrás de nós. Porque dizia consigo mesmo: Eu o aplacarei com o presente que me antecede, depois o verei; porventura me aceitará a presença.
21 The present went thus on before him; and he lodged himself that night in the camp.
21 Assim, passou o presente para diante dele; ele, porém, ficou aquela noite no acampamento.
22 And he rose up that night, and he took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Yabbok.
22 Levantou-se naquela mesma noite, tomou suas duas mulheres, suas duas servas e seus onze filhos e transpôs o vau de Jaboque.
23 And he took them, and sent them over the stream and sent over what he had.
23 Tomou-os e fê-los passar o ribeiro; fez passar tudo o que lhe pertencia,
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
24 ficando ele só; e lutava com ele um homem, até ao romper do dia.
25 And when he saw that he could net prevail against him, he struck against the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacobs thigh was put out of joint, as he was wrestling with him.
25 Vendo este que não podia com ele, tocou-lhe na articulação da coxa; deslocou-se a junta da coxa de Jacó, na luta com o homem.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day hath dawned. And he said, I will not let thee go until thou hast blessed me.
26 Disse este: Deixa-me ir, pois já rompeu o dia. Respondeu Jacó: Não te deixarei ir se me não abençoares.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? and he said, Jacob.
27 Perguntou-lhe, pois: Como te chamas? Ele respondeu: Jacó.
28 And he said, Not Jacob shall any more be called thy name, but Israel; for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
28 Então, disse: Já não te chamarás Jacó, e sim Israel, pois como príncipe lutaste com Deus e com os homens e prevaleceste.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
29 Tornou Jacó: Dize, rogo-te, como te chamas? Respondeu ele: Por que perguntas pelo meu nome? E o abençoou ali.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen an angel of God face to face, and my life hath been preserved.
30 Àquele lugar chamou Jacó Peniel, pois disse: Vi a Deus face a face, e a minha vida foi salva.
31 And the sun rose unto him as he passed by Penuel, and he halted upon his thigh.
31 Nasceu-lhe o sol, quando ele atravessava Peniel; e manquejava de uma coxa.
32 Therefore do the children of Israel not eat the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day; because he struck against the hollow of Jacobs thigh on the sinew that shrank.
32 Por isso, os filhos de Israel não comem, até hoje, o nervo do quadril, na articulação da coxa, porque o homem tocou a articulação da coxa de Jacó no nervo do quadril.
