1 And the men of Kirjathjearim came and carried up the ark of the LORD and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.
1 Então os homens da cidade de Jearim foram até lá e levaram a arca do Senhor . Eles a colocaram na casa de Abinadabe, que ficava num morro. E escolheram e separaram o seu filho Eleazar para tomar conta dela.
2 And it came to pass while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long, for it was twenty years, and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.
2 A arca da aliança ficou na cidade de Jearim bastante tempo, isto é, mais ou menos vinte anos. Durante esse tempo todos os israelitas oravam a Deus, o Senhor , pedindo ajuda.
3 And Samuel spoke unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye return unto the LORD with all your hearts, [then] put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you and prepare your hearts unto the LORD and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
3 Samuel disse ao povo de Israel: — Se vocês querem com todo o coração voltar a Deus, o
4 Then the sons of Israel did put away the Baalim and Ashtaroth and served the LORD only.
4 Aí os israelitas jogaram fora as suas várias imagens de Baal e também as de Astarote e adoraram somente a Deus, o Senhor .
5 And Samuel said, Gather all Israel in Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.
5 Então Samuel mandou que todos os israelitas se reunissem em Mispa. E prometeu que ali oraria por eles ao Senhor .
6 And they gathered together in Mizpeh and drew water and poured [it] out before the LORD and fasted on that day and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the sons of Israel in Mizpeh.
6 Assim todos eles se reuniram em Mispa. Tiraram água e a derramaram em oferta ao Senhor , jejuaram o dia todo e disseram: — Nós pecamos contra Deus, o E ali em Mispa Samuel julgava e governava o povo de Israel.
7 And when the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel were gathered together in Mizpeh, the cardinals of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the sons of Israel heard [it], they were afraid of the Philistines.
7 Quando os filisteus souberam que os israelitas haviam se reunido em Mispa, os cinco governadores filisteus saíram com os seus homens para atacá-los. Os israelitas souberam disso e ficaram com medo.
8 And the sons of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
8 E disseram a Samuel: — Não pare de orar ao
9 And Samuel took a sucking lamb and offered [it for] a burnt offering completely unto the LORD, and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel, and the LORD heard him.
9 Então Samuel matou um carneirinho e queimou todo ele como sacrifício a Deus, o Senhor . Pediu que o Senhor ajudasse o povo de Israel, e ele respondeu à sua oração.
10 And it came to pass as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering that the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. But the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines and crushed them, and they were smitten before Israel.
10 Enquanto Samuel estava oferecendo o sacrifício, os filisteus avançaram contra os israelitas. Mas o Senhor os atacou com fortes trovoadas. Então eles ficaram em completa confusão e fugiram.
11 And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh and pursued the Philistines and smote them until [they were] below Bethcar.
11 Os israelitas saíram de Mispa e perseguiram os filisteus até Bete-Car, matando-os pelo caminho.
12 Then Samuel took a stone and set [it] between Mizpeh and Shen and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Thus far the LORD has helped us.
12 Aí Samuel pegou uma pedra, pôs entre Mispa e Sem e disse: — Até aqui o Por isso deu a ela o nome de Ebenézer .
13 So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the border of Israel, and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
13 Assim os filisteus foram derrotados, e o Senhor Deus não deixou que eles invadissem a terra de Israel enquanto Samuel viveu.
14 And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel from Ekron even unto Gath with their borders, and Israel delivered them out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorite.
14 Todas as cidades que os filisteus haviam tomado, desde Ecrom até Gate, foram devolvidas ao povo de Israel. Dessa maneira os israelitas receberam de volta toda a sua terra. E também houve paz entre os israelitas e os amorreus.
15 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
15 Até o fim da sua vida Samuel foi chefe e juiz do povo de Israel.
16 And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpeh and judged Israel in all those places.
16 Todos os anos ele ia a Betel, Gilgal e Mispa e nesses lugares resolvia as questões que o povo lhe apresentava.
17 Then he would return to Ramah, for there [was] his house, and there he judged Israel, and there he built an altar unto the LORD.:
17 Depois voltava para a sua casa na cidade de Ramá, onde também era juiz. E em Ramá Samuel construiu um altar para Deus, o Senhor .
