1 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.
1 Todavia, sucedeu que, quando Sambalate ouviu que nós edificávamos a muralha, ele ficou enfurecido, e teve grande indignação, e zombou dos judeus.
2 And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said: 'What do these feeble Jews? will they restore at will? will they sacrifice? will they make an end this day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burned?'
2 E ele falou diante dos seus irmãos e do exército de Samaria, e disse: O que fazem estes fracos judeus? Fortificar-se-ão? Sacrificarão? Acabarão eles em um dia? Reavivarão as pedras dos montes de entulho que estão queimadas?
3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said: 'Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall break down their stone wall.'
3 Ora, Tobias, o amonita estava junto a ele, e disse: Mesmo que eles edifiquem, se uma raposa subir, ela porá abaixo a sua muralha de pedra.
4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised; and turn back their reproach upon their own head, and give them up to spoiling in a land of captivity;
4 Ouve, ó nosso Deus; porque somos desprezados; e torna o opróbrio sobre as suas próprias cabeças, e entrega-os por presa na terra do cativeiro;
5 and cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before Thee; for they have vexed Thee before the builders.
5 e não cubras a sua iniquidade, e que o seu pecado não seja apagado de diante de ti; porquanto eles têm te provocado à ira diante dos edificadores.
6 So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto half the height thereof; for the people had a mind to work.
6 Assim, nós edificamos a muralha; e toda muralha se completou até a metade; porque o povo tinha a mente para o trabalho.
7 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem went forward, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth;
7 Porém, sucedeu que, quando Sambalate e Tobias, e os árabes, e os amonitas, e os asdoditas, ouviram que as muralhas de Jerusalém estavam erigidas, e que as fendas começavam a ser fechadas, eles então ficaram mui enfurecidos,
8 and they conspired all of them together to come and fight against Jerusalem, and to cause confusion therein.
8 e todos juntos conspiraram para vir e lutar contra Jerusalém, e impedi-los.
9 But we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.
9 Todavia, nós fizemos a nossa oração ao nosso Deus, e posicionamos uma guarda contra eles, dia e noite, por sua causa.
10 And Judah said: 'The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.'
10 E Judá disse: Já desfaleceram as forças dos acarretadores, e há muito entulho; de modo que não somos capazes de edificar a muralha.
11 And our adversaries said: 'They shall not know, neither see, till we come into the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.'
11 E os nossos adversários disseram: Eles não saberão, nem verão, até que entremos no seu meio, e os matemos, e façamos cessar a obra.
12 And it came to pass that, when the Jews that dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times: 'Ye must return unto us from all places.'
12 E sucedeu que, vindo os judeus que habitavam entre eles, nos disseram dez vezes: De todos os lugares, tornarão contra nós.
13 Therefore set I in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in the open places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.
13 Por isso eu pus nos lugares mais baixos atrás da muralha, e nos lugares mais altos, pus o povo segundo as suas famílias com as suas espadas, com as suas lanças, e com os seus arcos.
14 And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people: 'Be not ye afraid of them; remember the Lord, who is great and awful, and fight for your brethren, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses.'
14 E eu olhava, e me levantava, e dizia aos nobres, e aos governantes, e ao restante do povo: Não os temais; lembrai-vos do Senhor, que é grande e terrível, e luta pelos vossos irmãos, vossos filhos, e vossas filhas, vossas esposas e vossas casas.
15 And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.
15 E sucedeu que, quando os nossos inimigos ouviram que isto era sabido por nós, e que Deus havia transformado o conselho deles em nada, todos nós retornamos à muralha, cada um para o seu trabalho.
16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that half of my servants wrought in the work, and half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.
16 E sucedeu que, daquele tempo em diante, metade dos meus servos trabalhava na obra, e a outra metade deles tinha as lanças, os escudos, os arcos, e as couraças; e os governantes estavam por detrás de toda a casa de Judá.
17 They that builded the wall and they that bore burdens laded themselves, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other held his weapon;
17 Aqueles que edificavam sobre a muralha, e aqueles que levavam as cargas, com aqueles que carregavam, cada um com uma das suas mãos trabalhava na obra, e com a outra mão segurava uma arma.
18 and the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the horn was by me.
18 Porque os edificadores, cada um tinha a sua espada cingida ao seu lado, e assim edificavam. E aquele que soava a trombeta estava junto a mim.
19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers and to the rest of the people: 'The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another;
19 E eu disse aos nobres, e aos governantes, e ao restante do povo: A obra é grande e extensa, e nós estamos separados sobre a muralha, um longe do outro.
20 in what place soever ye hear the sound of the horn, resort ye thither unto us; our God will fight for us.'
20 Portanto, no lugar que ouvirdes o som da trombeta, correi ali até nós; o nosso Deus lutará por nós.
21 So we wrought in the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.
21 Assim trabalhávamos na obra; e metade deles segurava as lanças desde o levantar da manhã até que as estrelas aparecessem.
22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people: 'Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labour in the day.'
22 De modo semelhante, naquele tempo, eu disse ao povo: Que cada um com o seu servo se aloje na parte interna de Jerusalém, para que à noite eles possam ser uma guarda para nós, e trabalhem de dia.
23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard that followed me, none of us put off our clothes, every one that went to the water had his weapon.
23 Assim, nem eu, nem os meus irmãos, nem os meus servos, nem os homens da guarda que me seguiam, nenhum de nós tirava as suas vestes, salvo para que cada um pudesse tirá-las para lavar.
