¹ And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

¹ E os filhos de Israel fizeram o mal aos olhos do SENHOR; e o SENHOR os entregou na mão de Midiã por sete anos.

² And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

² E a mão de Midiã prevaleceu contra Israel; e por causa dos midianitas, os filhos de Israel fizeram para si as covas que estão nos montes, e cavernas e fortalezas.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them;

³ E assim, quando Israel semeava, os midianitas subiam, e os amalequitas, e os filhos do oriente, até eles subiam contra eles;

⁴ and they encamped against them, and destroyed the produce of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

⁴ e se acampavam contra eles, e destruíam o produto da terra, até chegarem a Gaza, e não deixavam sustento para Israel: nem ovelha, nem boi, nem jumento.

⁵ For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number; and they came into the land to destroy it.

⁵ Pois eles subiam com o seu gado e suas tendas, e vinham como locustas em multidão; pois tanto eles quanto os seus camelos eram inumeráveis; e entravam na terra para destruí-la.

⁶ And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

⁶ E Israel ficou grandemente empobrecido por causa dos midianitas; e os filhos de Israel clamaram ao SENHOR.

⁷ And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of Midian,

⁷ E sucedeu que, quando os filhos de Israel clamaram ao SENHOR por causa dos midianitas,

⁸ that the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel; and he said unto them: 'Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel: I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

⁸ o SENHOR enviou um profeta aos filhos de Israel, que lhes disse: Assim diz o SENHOR Deus de Israel: Eu vos fiz subir do Egito, e vos retirei da casa da servidão;

⁹ and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land.

⁹ e vos libertei da mão dos egípcios, e da mão de todos os que vos oprimiam, e os expulsei de diante de vós, e vos dei a sua terra;

¹⁰ And I said unto you: I am the LORD your God; ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; but ye have not hearkened unto My voice.'

¹⁰ e eu vos disse: Eu sou o SENHOR vosso Deus; não temais os deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra habitais; vós, porém, não obedecestes à minha voz.

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD came, and sat under the terebinth which was in Ophrah, that belonged unto Joash the Abiezrite; and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

¹¹ E veio ali um anjo do SENHOR, e se assentou debaixo de um carvalho que ficava em Ofra, que pertencia a Joás, o abiezrita; e o seu filho, Gideão, debulhava o trigo no lagar, para escondê-lo dos midianitas.

¹² And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him: 'The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.'

¹² E o anjo do SENHOR lhe apareceu, e lhe disse: O SENHOR está contigo, homem poderoso e valente.

¹³ And Gideon said unto him: 'Oh, my lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all His wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying: Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.'

¹³ E Gideão lhe disse: Ó meu Senhor, se o SENHOR está conosco, então por que tudo isso nos sobreveio? E onde estão todos os milagres os quais os nossos pais nos contaram, dizendo: O SENHOR não nos fez subir do Egito? Agora, porém, o SENHOR nos abandonou e nos entregou nas mãos dos midianitas.

¹⁴ And the LORD turned towards him, and said: 'Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian; have not I sent thee?'

¹⁴ E o SENHOR olhou para ele e disse: Vai neste poder, e tu salvarás Israel da mão dos midianitas; não te enviei eu?

¹⁵ And he said unto him: 'Oh, my lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.'

¹⁵ E ele lhe disse: Ó meu Senhor, com que salvarei Israel? Eis que a minha família é pobre em Manassés, e eu sou o menor na casa do meu pai.

¹⁶ And the LORD said unto him: 'Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.'

¹⁶ E o SENHOR lhe disse: Certamente estarei contigo, e tu ferirás os midianitas como a um homem.

¹⁷ And he said unto him: 'If now I have found favour in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me.

¹⁷ E ele lhe disse: Se agora tenho achado graça aos teus olhos, então, mostra-me um sinal de que tu falas comigo.

¹⁸ Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee.' And he said: 'I will tarry until thou come back.'

¹⁸ Não partas daqui, rogo-te, até que eu venha a ti, e te traga o meu presente, e o coloque diante de ti. E ele disse: Aguardarei até que tu retornes.

¹⁹ And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal; the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the terebinth, and presented it.

¹⁹ E Gideão entrou, e preparou um cabrito, e bolos ázimos de um efa de farinha; pôs a carne em um cesto, e ele pôs o caldo em uma panela, e o trouxe para fora, debaixo do carvalho, e o apresentou.

²⁰ And the angel of God said unto him: 'Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth.' And he did so.

²⁰ E o anjo de Deus lhe disse: Toma a carne e os bolos ázimos e coloca-os sobre esta rocha, e derrama o caldo. E ele assim o fez.

²¹ Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight.

²¹ Então, o anjo do SENHOR estendeu a ponta da vara que estava na sua mão, e tocou a carne e os bolos ázimos; e subiu fogo da rocha, e consumiu a carne e os bolos ázimos. Então, o anjo do SENHOR retirou-se da sua vista.

²² And Gideon saw that he was the angel of the LORD; and Gideon said: 'Alas, O Lord GOD! forasmuch as I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face.'

²² E, quando Gideão percebeu que ele era um anjo do SENHOR, Gideão disse: Ai de mim, ó Senhor DEUS! Porque vi um anjo do SENHOR face a face.

²³ And the LORD said unto him: 'Peace be unto thee; fear not; thou shalt not die.'

²³ E o SENHOR lhe disse: Paz seja contigo; não temas; não morrerás.

²⁴ Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it 'Adonai-shalom'; unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

²⁴ Então Gideão edificou ali um altar ao SENHOR, e o chamou de Jeová-Shalom; e até este dia ainda está em Ofra dos abiezritas.

²⁵ And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him: 'Take thy father's bullock, and the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the Asherah that is by it;

²⁵ E sucedeu que, na mesma noite, o SENHOR lhe disse: Toma o novilho do teu pai, o segundo novilho de sete anos de idade, e põe abaixo o altar de Baal que o teu pai tem, e corta o arvoredo que está junto a ele;

²⁶ and build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this stronghold, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt-offering with the wood of the Asherah which thou shalt cut down.'

²⁶ e edifica um altar para o SENHOR, teu Deus, no cume dessa rocha, no local ordenado, e toma o segundo novilho, e oferece um sacrifício queimado com a madeira do arvoredo que tu cortares.

²⁷ Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had spoken unto him; and it came to pass, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

²⁷ Então Gideão tomou dez homens dentre os seus servos, e fez segundo o SENHOR lhe disse; e assim foi, porque como temia a casa de seu pai, e os homens da cidade, ele não poderia fazê-lo de dia, mas fê-lo à noite.

²⁸ And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

²⁸ E quando os homens da cidade se levantaram de manhã cedo, eis que o altar de Baal estava demolido, e o arvoredo que estava junto a ele estava cortado, e o segundo novilho foi oferecido sobre o altar que foi edificado.

²⁹ And they said one to another: 'Who hath done this thing?' And when they inquired and asked, they said: 'Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.'

²⁹ E disseram uns aos outros: Quem fez esta coisa? E, quando investigaram e perguntaram, disseram: Gideão, o filho de Joás fez esta coisa.

³⁰ Then the men of the city said unto Joash: 'Bring out thy son, that he may die; because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the Asherah that was by it.'

³⁰ Então, os homens da cidade disseram a Joás: Traz para fora o teu filho, para que morra; porque ele demoliu o altar de Baal, e porque cortou o arvoredo que estava junto dele.

³¹ And Joash said unto all that stood against him: 'Will ye contend for Baal? or will ye save him? he that will contend for him, shall be put to death before morning; if he be a god, let him contend for himself, because one hath broken down his altar.'

³¹ E Joás disse a todos os que se levantaram contra ele: Vós rogareis por Baal? Podereis salvá-lo? Que seja levado à morte aquele que roga por ele enquanto ainda é manhã; se ele for um deus, que rogue a si mesmo, já que demoliram o seu altar.

³² Therefore on that day he was called Jerubbaal, saying: 'Let Baal contend against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

³² Por isso, naquele dia, ele o chamou de Jerubaal, dizendo: Que Baal defenda-se contra ele, porque ele pôs abaixo o seu altar.

³³ Now all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they passed over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

³³ Então, todos os midianitas e os amalequitas e os filhos do oriente se reuniram, e atravessaram, e acamparam no vale de Jezreel.

³⁴ But the spirit of the LORD clothed Gideon; and he blew a horn; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

³⁴ Porém, o Espírito do SENHOR veio sobre Gideão, e ele soprou uma trombeta; e Abiezer foi reunido após ele.

³⁵ And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him; and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

³⁵ E ele enviou mensageiros por todo Manassés; que também foi reunido após ele; e enviou mensageiros a Aser, e a Zebulom, e a Naftali; e eles subiram para encontrá-los.

³⁶ And Gideon said unto God: 'If Thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,

³⁶ E Gideão disse a Deus: Se tu queres salvar Israel pela minha mão, como disseste,

³⁷ behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing-floor; if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the ground, then shall I know that Thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken.'

³⁷ eis que colocarei um velo de lã no chão; e se o orvalho estiver somente sobre o velo, e a terra ao redor estiver seca, então saberei que queres salvar Israel pela minha mão, conforme disseste.

³⁸ And it was so; for he rose up early on the morrow, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung dew out of the fleece, a bowlful of water.

³⁸ E assim foi; pois levantou-se ele de manhã cedo, e espremeu o velo e, torcendo-o, removeu o orvalho do velo: uma tigela cheia de água.

³⁹ And Gideon said unto God: 'Let not Thine anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once: let me make trial, I pray Thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.'

³⁹ E Gideão disse a Deus: Não se acenda a tua ira contra mim, e falarei só mais esta vez; permita-me provar, rogo-te, só mais esta vez com o velo; que agora esteja seco somente sobre o velo, e sobre todo o solo haja orvalho.

⁴⁰ And God did so that night; for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

⁴⁰ E Deus assim o fez naquela noite; pois apenas sobre o velo estava seco, e havia orvalho sobre todo o solo.
