1 THERE was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was whole-hearted and upright, and one that feared God, and shunned evil.
1 Havia um homem na terra de Uz, cujo nome era Jó; e era este homem íntegro, reto e temente a Deus e desviava-se do mal.
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.
2 E nasceram-lhe sete filhos e três filhas.
3 His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.
3 E o seu gado era de sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois e quinhentas jumentas; eram também muitíssimos os servos a seu serviço, de maneira que este homem era maior do que todos os do oriente.
4 And his sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
4 E iam seus filhos à casa uns dos outros e faziam banquetes cada um por sua vez; e mandavam convidar as suas três irmãs a comerem e beberem com eles.
5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said: 'It may be that my sons have sinned, and blasphemed God in their hearts.' Thus did Job continually.
5 Sucedia, pois, que, decorrido o turno de dias de seus banquetes, enviava Jó, e os santificava, e se levantava de madrugada, e oferecia holocaustos segundo o número de todos eles; porque dizia Jó: Porventura pecaram meus filhos, e amaldiçoaram a Deus no seu coração. Assim fazia Jó continuamente.
6 Now it fell upon a day, that the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
6 E num dia em que os filhos de Deus vieram apresentar-se perante o Senhor, veio também Satanás entre eles.
7 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Whence comest thou?' Then Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.'
7 Então o Senhor disse a Satanás: Donde vens? E Satanás respondeu ao Senhor, e disse: De rodear a terra, e passear por ela.
8 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Hast thou considered My servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a whole-hearted and an upright man, one that feareth God, and shunneth evil?'
8 E disse o Senhor a Satanás: Observaste tu a meu servo Jó? Porque ninguém há na terra semelhante a ele, homem íntegro e reto, temente a Deus, e que se desvia do mal.
9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'Doth Job fear God for nought?
9 Então respondeu Satanás ao Senhor, e disse: Porventura teme Jó a Deus debalde?
10 Hast not Thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions are increased in the land.
10 Porventura tu não cercaste de sebe, a ele, e a sua casa, e a tudo quanto tem? A obra de suas mãos abençoaste e o seu gado se tem aumentado na terra.
11 But put forth Thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, surely he will blaspheme Thee to Thy face.'
11 Mas estende a tua mão, e toca-lhe em tudo quanto tem, e verás se não blasfema contra ti na tua face.
12 And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand.' So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
12 E disse o Senhor a Satanás: Eis que tudo quanto ele tem está na tua mão; somente contra ele não estendas a tua mão. E Satanás saiu da presença do Senhor.
13 And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,
13 E sucedeu um dia, em que seus filhos e suas filhas comiam, e bebiam vinho, na casa de seu irmão primogênito,
14 that there came a messenger unto Job, and said: 'The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them;
14 Que veio um mensageiro a Jó, e lhe disse: Os bois lavravam, e as jumentas pastavam junto a eles;
15 and the Sabeans made a raid, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'
15 E deram sobre eles os sabeus, e os tomaram, e aos servos feriram ao fio da espada; e só eu escapei para trazer-te a nova.
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'A fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'
16 Estando este ainda falando, veio outro e disse: Fogo de Deus caiu do céu, e queimou as ovelhas e os servos, e os consumiu, e só eu escapei para trazer-te a nova.
17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'The Chaldeans set themselves in three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'
17 Estando ainda este falando, veio outro, e disse: Ordenando os caldeus três tropas, deram sobre os camelos, e os tomaram, e aos servos feriram ao fio da espada; e só eu escapei para trazer-te a nova.
18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said: 'Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;
18 Estando ainda este falando, veio outro, e disse: Estando teus filhos e tuas filhas comendo e bebendo vinho, em casa de seu irmão primogênito,
19 And, behold, there came a great wind from across the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.'
19 Eis que um grande vento sobreveio dalém do deserto, e deu nos quatro cantos da casa, que caiu sobre os jovens, e morreram; e só eu escapei para trazer-te a nova.
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;
20 Então Jó se levantou, e rasgou o seu manto, e rapou a sua cabeça, e se lançou em terra, e adorou.
21 And he said; naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither; the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
21 E disse: Nu saí do ventre de minha mãe e nu tornarei para lá; o Senhor o deu, e o Senhor o tomou: bendito seja o nome do Senhor.
22 For all this Job sinned not, nor ascribed aught unseemly to God.
22 Em tudo isto Jó não pecou, nem atribuiu a Deus falta alguma.
