1 And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan.
1 Jacó ficou morando na terra de Canaã, onde o seu pai tinha vivido.
2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being still a lad even with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought evil report of them unto their father.
2 Esta é a história da família de Jacó. Quando José era um jovem de dezessete anos, cuidava das ovelhas e das cabras, junto com os seus irmãos, os filhos de Bila e de Zilpa, que eram mulheres do seu pai. E José contava ao pai as coisas erradas que os seus irmãos faziam.
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colours.
3 Jacó já era velho quando José nasceu e por isso ele o amava mais do que a todos os seus outros filhos. Jacó mandou fazer para José uma túnica longa, de mangas compridas.
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
4 Os irmãos viam que o pai amava mais a José do que a eles e por isso tinham ódio dele e eram grosseiros quando falavam com ele.
5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brethren; and they hated him yet the more.
5 Certa vez José teve um sonho e o contou aos seus irmãos. Aí é que ficaram com mais raiva dele
6 And he said unto them: 'Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
6 porque ele disse assim: — Escutem, que eu vou contar o sonho que tive.
7 for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves came round about, and bowed down to my sheaf.'
7 Sonhei que estávamos no campo amarrando feixes de trigo. De repente, o meu feixe ficou de pé, e os feixes de vocês se colocaram em volta do meu e se curvavam diante dele.
8 And his brethren said to him: 'Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us?' And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
8 Então os irmãos perguntaram: — Quer dizer que você vai ser nosso rei e que vai mandar em nós? E ficaram com mais ódio dele ainda por causa dos seus sonhos e do jeito que ele os contava.
9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brethren, and said: 'Behold, I have dreamed yet a dream: and, behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.'
9 Depois José sonhou outra vez e contou também esse sonho aos seus irmãos. Ele disse assim: — Eu tive outro sonho. Desta vez o sol, a lua e onze estrelas se curvaram diante de mim.
10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren; and his father rebuked him, and said unto him: 'What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down to thee to the earth?'
10 Quando José contou esse sonho ao pai e aos irmãos, o pai o repreendeu e disse: — O que quer dizer esse sonho que você teve? Por acaso a sua mãe, os seus irmãos e eu vamos nos ajoelhar diante de você e encostar o rosto no chão?
11 And his brethren envied him; but his father kept the saying in mind.
11 Os irmãos de José tinham inveja dele, mas o seu pai ficou pensando no caso.
12 And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.
12 Um dia os irmãos de José levaram as ovelhas e as cabras do seu pai até os pastos que ficavam perto da cidade de Siquém.
13 And Israel said unto Joseph: 'Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them.' And he said to him: 'Here am I.'
13 Então Jacó disse a José: — Venha cá. Vou mandar você até Siquém, onde os seus irmãos estão cuidando das ovelhas e das cabras. — Estou pronto para ir — respondeu José.
14 And he said to him: 'Go now, see whether it is well with thy brethren, and well with the flock; and bring me back word.' So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
14 Jacó disse: — Vá lá e veja se os seus irmãos e os animais vão bem e me traga notícias. Então dali, do vale de Hebrom, Jacó mandou que José fosse até Siquém, e ele foi. Quando chegou lá,
15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying: 'What seekest thou?'
15 ele foi andando pelo campo. Aí um homem o viu e perguntou: — O que você está procurando?
16 And he said: 'I seek my brethren. Tell me, I pray thee, where they are feeding the flock.'
16 — Estou procurando os meus irmãos — respondeu José. — Eles estão por aí, em algum pasto, cuidando das ovelhas e das cabras. O senhor sabe aonde foram?
17 And the man said: 'They are departed hence; for I heard them say: Let us go to Dothan.' And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
17 O homem respondeu: — Eles já foram embora daqui. Eu ouvi quando disseram que iam para Dotã. Aí José foi procurar os seus irmãos e os achou em Dotã.
18 And they saw him afar off, and before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
18 Eles viram José de longe e, antes que chegasse perto, começaram a fazer planos para matá-lo.
19 And they said one to another: 'Behold, this dreamer cometh.
19 Eles disseram: — Lá vem o sonhador!
20 Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say: An evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.'
20 Venham, vamos matá-lo agora. Depois jogaremos o corpo num poço seco e diremos que um animal selvagem o devorou. Assim, veremos no que vão dar os sonhos dele.
21 And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand; and said: 'Let us not take his life.'
21 Quando Rúben ouviu isso, quis salvá-lo dos seus irmãos e disse: — Não vamos matá-lo.
22 And Reuben said unto them: 'Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him'--that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.
22 Não derramem sangue. Vocês podem jogá-lo neste poço, aqui no deserto, mas não o machuquem. Rúben disse isso porque planejava salvá-lo dos irmãos e mandá-lo de volta ao pai.
23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the coat of many colours that was on him;
23 Quando José chegou ao lugar onde os seus irmãos estavam, eles arrancaram dele a túnica longa, de mangas compridas, que ele estava vestindo.
24 and they took him, and cast him into the pit--and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
24 Depois o pegaram e o jogaram no poço, que estava vazio e seco.
25 And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites came from Gilead, with their camels bearing spicery and balm and ladanum, going to carry it down to Egypt.
25 E sentaram-se para comer. De repente, viram que ia passando uma caravana de ismaelitas que vinha de Gileade e ia para o Egito. Os seus camelos estavam carregados de perfumes e de especiarias .
26 And Judah said unto his brethren: 'What profit is it if we slay our brother and conceal his blood?
26 Aí Judá disse aos irmãos: — O que vamos ganhar se matarmos o nosso irmão e depois escondermos a sua morte?
27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother, our flesh.' And his brethren hearkened unto him.
27 Em vez de o matarmos, vamos vendê-lo a esses ismaelitas. Afinal de contas ele é nosso irmão, é do nosso sangue. Os irmãos concordaram.
28 And there passed by Midianites, merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they brought Joseph into Egypt.
28 Quando alguns negociantes midianitas passaram por ali, os irmãos de José o tiraram do poço e o venderam aos ismaelitas por vinte barras de prata. E os ismaelitas levaram José para o Egito.
29 And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
29 Quando Rúben voltou ao poço e viu que José não estava lá dentro, rasgou as suas roupas em sinal de tristeza.
30 And he returned unto his brethren, and said: 'The child is not; and as for me, whither shall I go?'
30 Ele voltou para o lugar onde os seus irmãos estavam e disse: — O rapaz não está mais lá! E agora o que é que eu vou fazer?
31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a he-goat, and dipped the coat in the blood;
31 Então os irmãos mataram um cabrito e com o sangue mancharam a túnica de José.
32 and they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said: 'This have we found. Know now whether it is thy son's coat or not.'
32 Depois levaram a túnica ao pai e disseram: — Achamos isso aí. Será que é a túnica do seu filho?
33 And he knew it, and said: 'It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.'
33 Jacó a reconheceu e disse: — Sim, é a túnica do meu filho! Certamente algum animal selvagem o despedaçou e devorou.
34 And Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
34 Então, em sinal de tristeza, Jacó rasgou as suas roupas e vestiu roupa de luto. E durante muito tempo ficou de luto pelo seu filho.
35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said: 'Nay, but I will go down to the grave to my son mourning.' And his father wept for him.
35 Todos os seus filhos e filhas tentaram consolá-lo, mas ele não quis ser consolado e disse: — Vou ficar de luto por meu filho até que vá me encontrar com ele no E continuou de luto por seu filho José.
36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard.
36 Enquanto isso, os midianitas venderam José a Potifar, oficial e capitão da guarda do rei do Egito.
