1 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
1 E Jacó foi no seu caminho, e os anjos de Deus o encontraram.
2 And Jacob said when he saw them: 'This is God's camp.' And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
2 E quando Jacó os viu, ele disse: Este é o exército de Deus. E ele chamou o nome do lugar Maanaim.
3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the field of Edom.
3 E Jacó enviou mensageiros adiante dele a Esaú, seu irmão, à terra de Seir, região de Edom.
4 And he commanded them, saying: 'Thus shall ye say unto my lord Esau: Thus saith thy servant Jacob: I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now.
4 E ele lhes ordenou, dizendo: Assim falareis a meu senhor Esaú: Teu servo Jacó diz assim: Eu habitei como peregrino com Labão, e fiquei lá até agora.
5 And I have oxen, and asses and flocks, and men-servants and maid-servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favour in thy sight.'
5 E eu tenho bois, e jumentos, rebanhos, e servos, e servas. E eu enviei para dizer a meu senhor para que eu encontre graça aos seus olhos.
6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying: 'We came to thy brother Esau, and moreover he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.'
6 E os mensageiros retornaram a Jacó, dizendo: Nós chegamos ao teu irmão Esaú, e ele também vem para te encontrar, e quatrocentos homens com ele.
7 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. And he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two camps.
7 Então Jacó ficou muito amedrontado e angustiado, e ele dividiu em dois bandos o povo que estava com ele, e os rebanhos, e o gado, e os camelos,
8 And he said: 'If Esau come to the one camp, and smite it, then the camp which is left shall escape.'
8 e ele disse: Se Esaú vier a um bando e o ferir, então o outro bando que sobrar escapará.
9 And Jacob said: 'O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who saidst unto me: Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good;
9 E Jacó disse: Ó Deus de meu pai Abraão, e Deus de meu pai Isaque, o SENHOR que disse a mim: Torna à tua terra, à tua parentela, e eu te tratarei bem.
10 I am not worthy of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which Thou hast shown unto Thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two camps.
10 Eu não sou digno da menor de todas as misericórdias, e de toda a verdade, que tu tens mostrado ao teu servo, porque com meu cajado passei este Jordão, e agora eu me tornei dois bandos.
11 Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the children.
11 Livra-me, rogo-te, da mão de meu irmão, da mão de Esaú, porque eu o temo, para que ele não venha e me fira, e a mãe com os filhos.
12 And Thou saidst: I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.'
12 E tu disseste: Eu certamente te farei bem, e farei tua semente como a areia do mar, que não pode ser enumerada por ser uma multidão.
13 And he lodged there that night; and took of that which he had with him a present for Esau his brother:
13 E ele pernoitou ali aquela mesma noite, e tomou do que veio à sua mão por presente para Esaú, seu irmão:
14 two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
14 duzentas cabras e vinte bodes, duzentas ovelhas e vinte carneiros,
15 thirty milch camels and their colts, forty kine and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten foals.
15 trinta camelas de leite com suas crias, quarenta vacas e dez novilhos, vinte jumentas e dez jumentinhos.
16 And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself; and said unto his servants: 'Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.'
16 E ele os entregou na mão de seus servos, cada rebanho à parte, e disse a seus servos: Passai adiante de mim, e deixai espaço entre rebanho e rebanho.
17 And he commanded the foremost, saying: 'When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying: Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
17 E ele ordenou ao primeiro, dizendo: Quando Esaú, meu irmão, te encontrar e te perguntar, dizendo: De quem és tu? E para onde vais? E de quem são estes diante de ti?
18 then thou shalt say: They are thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord, even unto Esau; and, behold, he also is behind us.'
18 Então tu dirás: Eles são de teu servo Jacó. É um presente enviado ao meu senhor Esaú; e eis que ele também está atrás de nós.
19 And he commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying: 'In this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him;
19 E assim ele ordenou ao segundo, e ao terceiro, e a todos os que seguiram os rebanhos, dizendo: Desta maneira falareis a Esaú, quando o encontrardes.
20 and ye shall say: Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us.' For he said: 'I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.'
20 E dizei além disso: Eis que teu servo Jacó está atrás de nós. Porque ele disse: Eu vou apaziguá-lo com o presente que vai adiante de mim, e depois eu verei a sua face, porventura ele me aceitará.
21 So the present passed over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp.
21 Assim foi o presente antes dele, e ele mesmo pernoitou aquela noite no acampamento.
22 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven children, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok.
22 E ele levantou-se naquela noite, e tomou suas duas mulheres, e suas duas servas, e seus onze filhos, e passou o vau de Jaboque.
23 And he took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.
23 E ele os tomou, e os enviou a passar o ribeiro, e enviou o que ele tinha.
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
24 E Jacó foi deixado só. E ali lutou com ele um homem até o romper do dia.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him.
25 E quando este viu que não prevalecia contra ele, tocou a junta de sua coxa. E se desconjuntou a junta de sua coxa, enquanto lutava com ele.
26 And he said: 'Let me go, for the day breaketh.' And he said: 'I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.'
26 E ele disse: Deixa-me ir, pois o dia já rompe. E ele disse: Eu não te deixarei ir, a não ser que me abençoes.
27 And he said unto him: 'What is thy name?' And be said: 'Jacob.'
27 E ele lhe disse: Qual é o teu nome? E ele disse: Jacó.
28 And he said: 'Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.'
28 E disse-lhe: Teu nome não será mais chamado Jacó, mas Israel, porque como um príncipe tu tens poder com Deus e com homens, e prevaleceste.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said: 'Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.' And he said: 'Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?' And he blessed him there.
29 E Jacó lhe perguntou, e disse: Dize-me, rogo-te, teu nome. E ele disse: Por que é que tu perguntas o meu nome? E ele o abençoou ali.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: 'for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.'
30 E Jacó chamou o nome do lugar Peniel, pois eu tenho visto a Deus face a face, e a minha vida foi preservada.
31 And the sun rose upon him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped upon his thigh.
31 E quando ele passou por Peniel, o sol se levantou sobre ele, e ele manquejava da sua coxa.
32 Therefore the children of Israel eat not the sinew of the thigh-vein which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day; because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh, even in the sinew of the thigh-vein.
32 Por isso os filhos de Israel não comem, até o dia de hoje, do nervo que está sobre a juntura da coxa, porque ele tocou a juntura da coxa de Jacó no tendão que se encolheu.
