1 Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face is changed.
1 Quem é como o sábio? E quem sabe a interpretação das coisas? A sabedoria do homem faz reluzir o seu rosto, e muda-se a dureza da sua face.
2 I counsel thee : keep the king's command, and that in regard of the oath of God.
2 Eu te digo: observa o mandamento do rei, e isso por causa do teu juramento feito a Deus.
3 Be not hasty to go out of his presence; stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
3 Não te apresses em deixar a presença dele, nem te obstines em coisa má, porque ele faz o que bem entende.
4 Forasmuch as the king's word hath power; and who may say unto him: 'What doest thou?'
4 Porque a palavra do rei tem autoridade suprema; e quem lhe dirá: Que fazes?
5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man's heart discerneth time and judgment.
5 Quem guarda o mandamento não experimenta nenhum mal; e o coração do sábio conhece o tempo e o modo.
6 For to every matter there is a time and judgment; for the evil of man is great upon him.
6 Porque para todo propósito há tempo e modo; porquanto é grande o mal que pesa sobre o homem.
7 For he knoweth not that which shall be; for even when it cometh to pass, who shall declare it unto him?
7 Porque este não sabe o que há de suceder; e, como há de ser, ninguém há que lho declare.
8 There is no man that hath power over the wind to retain the wind; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war; neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.
8 Não há nenhum homem que tenha domínio sobre o vento para o reter; nem tampouco tem ele poder sobre o dia da morte; nem há tréguas nesta peleja; nem tampouco a perversidade livrará aquele que a ela se entrega.
9 All this have I seen, even applied my heart thereto, whatever the work that is done under the sun; what time one man had power over another to his hurt.
9 Tudo isto vi quando me apliquei a toda obra que se faz debaixo do sol; há tempo em que um homem tem domínio sobre outro homem, para arruiná-lo.
10 And so I saw the wicked buried, and they entered into their rest; but they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city; this also is vanity.
10 Assim também vi os perversos receberem sepultura e entrarem no repouso, ao passo que os que frequentavam o lugar santo foram esquecidos na cidade onde fizeram o bem; também isto é vaidade.
11 Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil;
11 Visto como se não executa logo a sentença sobre a má obra, o coração dos filhos dos homens está inteiramente disposto a praticar o mal.
12 because a sinner doeth evil a hundred times, and prolongeth his days--though yet I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, that fear before Him;
12 Ainda que o pecador faça o mal cem vezes, e os dias se lhe prolonguem, eu sei com certeza que bem sucede aos que temem a Deus.
13 but it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he feareth not before God.
13 Mas o perverso não irá bem, nem prolongará os seus dias; será como a sombra, visto que não teme diante de Deus.
14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth: that there are righteous men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous--I said that this also is vanity.
14 Ainda há outra vaidade sobre a terra: justos a quem sucede segundo as obras dos perversos, e perversos a quem sucede segundo as obras dos justos. Digo que também isto é vaidade.
15 So I commended mirth, that a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry, and that this should accompany him in his labour all the days of his life which God hath given him under the sun.
15 Então, exaltei eu a alegria, porquanto para o homem nenhuma coisa há melhor debaixo do sol do que comer, beber e alegrar-se; pois isso o acompanhará no seu trabalho nos dias da vida que Deus lhe dá debaixo do sol.
16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth--for neither day nor night do men see sleep with their eyes--
16 Aplicando-me a conhecer a sabedoria e a ver o trabalho que há sobre a terra — pois nem de dia nem de noite vê o homem sono nos seus olhos —,
17 then I beheld all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun; because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea further, though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
17 então, contemplei toda a obra de Deus e vi que o homem não pode compreender a obra que se faz debaixo do sol; por mais que trabalhe o homem para a descobrir, não a entenderá; e, ainda que diga o sábio que a virá a conhecer, nem por isso a poderá achar.
