1 I said in my heart: 'Come now, I will try thee with mirth, and enjoy pleasure'; and, behold, this also was vanity.
1 Disse eu no meu coração: Vamos agora, eu te provarei com júbilo; portanto goza o prazer; mas eis que isso também é vaidade.
2 I said of laughter: 'It is mad'; and of mirth: 'What doth it accomplish?'
2 Do riso eu disse: Está louco; e da alegria: Para que serve esta?
3 I searched in my heart how to pamper my flesh with wine, and, my heart conducting itself with wisdom, how yet to lay hold on folly, till I might see which it was best for the sons of men that they should do under the heaven the few days of their life.
3 Busquei no meu coração como me dar ao vinho, porém instruindo o meu coração com sabedoria; e como entregar-me à loucura, até ver o que seria bom que os filhos dos homens fizessem debaixo do céu todos os dias de sua vida.
4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards;
4 Fiz para mim grandes obras; edifiquei para mim casas; plantei para mim vinhas.
5 I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit;
5 Fiz para mim jardins e pomares, e plantei neles árvores de todos os tipos de frutos.
6 I made me pools of water, to water therefrom the wood springing up with trees;
6 Fiz para mim tanques de águas, para regar com eles a mata que produz árvores.
7 I acquired men-servants and maid-servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that were before me in Jerusalem;
7 Adquiri para mim servos e donzelas, e tive servos nascidos em minha casa; também tive grandes possessões de rebanhos, grandes e pequenos, mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalém.
8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and treasure such as kings and the provinces have as their own; I got me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, women very many.
8 Amontoei também para mim prata e ouro, e os peculiares tesouros dos reis e das províncias; provi-me de cantores e cantoras, e das delícias dos filhos dos homens; assim como de instrumentos musicais de todo o tipo.
9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem; also my wisdom stood me in stead.
9 E assim fui engrandecido, e aumentei mais do que todos os que houve antes de mim em Jerusalém; e também permaneceu comigo a minha sabedoria.
10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy, for my heart had joy of all my labour; and this was my portion from all my labour.
10 E tudo quanto os meus olhos desejaram, não lhes neguei, nem privei o meu coração de qualquer gozo; porque o meu coração se alegrou por todo o meu trabalho, e esta foi a minha porção de todo o meu trabalho.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
11 Eu olhei para todas as obras que fizeram as minhas mãos, como também para o trabalho que eu tinha me esforçado para fazer, e eis que tudo era vaidade e angústia de espírito; e nenhum benefício havia debaixo do sol.
12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness and folly; for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
12 Então passei a contemplar a sabedoria, e a loucura e a insensatez. Pois, o que pode fazer o homem que vem após o rei? Apenas aquilo que já foi feito.
13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.
13 Então eu vi que a sabedoria é mais excelente do que a insensatez, assim como a luz é mais excelente do que a escuridão.
14 The wise man, his eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness. And I also perceived that one event happeneth to them all.
14 Os olhos do homem sábio estão na sua cabeça, mas o tolo anda na escuridão; então também percebi que o mesmo caso sucede a ambos.
15 Then said I in my heart: 'As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise?' Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
15 Então eu disse assim no meu coração: Como acontece ao tolo, assim acontecerá comigo; por que então eu busquei ser mais sábio? Então disse no meu coração que isto também é vaidade.
16 For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will long ago have been forgotten. And how must the wise man die even as the fool!
16 Porque não haverá, para sempre, mais lembrança do sábio do que do tolo; visto excluir o que agora é, será esquecido nos dias futuros. E como morre o homem sábio? Da mesma maneira que morre o tolo!
17 So I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind.
17 Portanto odiei a vida, porque o trabalho que se faz debaixo do sol é doloroso para mim; porque tudo é vaidade e angústia de espírito.
18 And I hated all my labour wherein I laboured under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me.
18 Sim, eu odiei todo o meu trabalho, o que realizei debaixo do sol, porque eu havia de deixá-lo ao homem que viesse depois de mim.
19 And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.
19 E quem poderá saber se ele será um homem sábio ou tolo? Todavia, ele terá domínio sobre todo o trabalho que realizei, e onde eu me mostrei sábio debaixo do sol; isto também é vaidade.
20 Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labour wherein I had laboured under the sun.
20 Então eu comecei a trazer desespero ao meu coração por todo o trabalho que realizei debaixo do sol.
21 For there is a man whose labour is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skill; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.
21 Porque há um homem cujo trabalho é com sabedoria, conhecimento, e equidade; contudo deixará o seu trabalho como porção de quem nele não trabalhou; isto também é vaidade e grande mal.
22 For what hath a man of all his labour, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he laboureth under the sun?
22 Porque, o que tem o homem de todo o seu trabalho, e da angústia do seu coração, em que ele anda trabalhando debaixo do sol?
23 For all his days are pains, and his occupation vexation; yea, even in the night his heart taketh not rest. This also is vanity.
23 Porque todos os seus dias são dores, e o seu trabalho tristeza; o seu coração não descansa à noite. Isto também é vaidade.
24 There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy pleasure for his labour. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God.
24 Não há nada melhor para o homem do que comer e beber, e fazer com que sua alma goze do bem do seu trabalho. Isto também eu vi que vem da mão de Deus.
25 For who will eat, or who will enjoy, if not I?
25 Por que quem pode comer, ou quem pode se alegrar mais do que eu?
26 For to the man that is good in His sight He giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner He giveth the task, to gather and to heap up, that he may leave to him that is good in the sight of God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
26 Porque Deus dá ao homem que é bom aos seus olhos, a sabedoria, o conhecimento e a alegria; mas ao pecador ele dá trabalho, para que ele ajunte, e amontoe, e para que ele, dê o que é bom diante de Deus. Isto também é vaidade e angústia de espírito.
