1 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.
1 E Davi enumerou o povo que estava com ele, e colocou capitães de milhares e capitães de centúrias sobre eles.
2 And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people: 'I will surely go forth with you myself also.'
2 E Davi enviou uma terça parte do povo sob a mão de Joabe, e uma terça parte sob a mão de Abisai, o filho de Zeruia, o irmão de Joabe, e uma terça parte sob a mão de Itai, o geteu. E o rei disse ao povo: Certamente eu mesmo sairei também contigo.
3 But the people said: 'Thou shalt not go forth; for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us; but thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succour us out of the city.'
3 O povo, porém, respondeu: Tu não sairás; porquanto se fugirmos para longe, eles não se importarão conosco; nem se a metade de nós morrer, eles se importarão conosco; mas agora tu vales dez mil de nós; portanto, agora, é melhor que da cidade tu possas nos oferecer socorro.
4 And the king said unto them: 'What seemeth you best I will do.' And the king stood by the gate-side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.
4 E o rei disse a eles: O que vos parecer melhor, farei. E o rei se pôs de pé junto ao portão da cidade, e todo o povo saiu às centenas e aos milhares.
5 And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying: 'Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom.' And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
5 E o rei ordenou a Joabe e a Abisai e a Itai, dizendo: Tratai gentilmente os moços, por minha causa, igualmente com Absalão. E todo o povo ouviu quando o rei deu a todos os capitães ordens acerca de Absalão.
6 So the people went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.
6 Assim, o povo saiu para o campo contra Israel; e a batalha foi no bosque de Efraim;
7 And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.
7 onde o povo de Israel foi morto diante dos servos de Davi, e ali houve um grande massacre naquele dia de vinte mil homens.
8 For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
8 Porque a batalha foi dali espalhada sobre a face de todo o país; e o bosque devorou mais pessoas naquele dia do que devorou a espada.
9 And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great terebinth, and his head caught hold of the terebinth, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went on.
9 E Absalão encontrou os servos de Davi. E Absalão montou em uma mula, e a mula seguiu por baixo dos ramos espessos de um grande carvalho, e a sua cabeça ficou presa no carvalho, e ele ficou pendurado entre o céu e a terra; e a mula que estava debaixo dele se foi.
10 And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said: 'Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in a terebinth.'
10 E um certo homem viu isto, e contou a Joabe, e disse: Eis que vi Absalão pendurado em um carvalho.
11 And Joab said unto the man that told him: 'And, behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have had to give thee ten pieces of silver, and a girdle.'
11 E Joabe disse ao homem que lhe contou: E, eis que tu o viste, por que não o feriste ali, trazendo-lhe abaixo? E eu te teria dado dez shekels de prata, e um cinto.
12 And the man said unto Joab: 'Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying: Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
12 E o homem disse a Joabe: Mesmo que eu recebesse mil shekels de prata em minha mão, nem assim estenderia a minha mão contra o filho do rei; porque ouvimos quando o rei ordenou a ti, e Abisai e Itai, dizendo: Acautelai-vos para que ninguém toque no jovem Absalão.
13 Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against mine own life--and there is no matter hid from the king--then thou thyself wouldest have stood aloof.'
13 Do contrário eu teria operado falsidade contra a minha própria vida; porque não há questão oculta do rei, e tu mesmo terias te lançado contra mim.
14 Then said Joab: 'I may not tarry thus with thee.' And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the terebinth.
14 Então, disse Joabe: Não posso esperar mais aqui contigo. E ele tomou três dardos em sua mão, e atravessou com eles o coração de Absalão, enquanto ele estava ainda vivo no meio do carvalho.
15 And ten young men that bore Joab's armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
15 E dez moços que carregavam a armadura de Joabe se posicionaram em volta e feriram Absalão, e o mataram.
16 And Joab blew the horn, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people.
16 E Joabe soprou a trombeta, e o povo retornou da perseguição a Israel; porque Joabe conteve o povo.
17 And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones; and all Israel fled every one to his tent.--
17 E tomaram Absalão, e o lançaram em uma grande vala no bosque, e puseram uma pilha mui grande de pedras sobre ele; e todo o Israel fugiu, cada qual para a sua tenda.
18 Now Absalom in his life-time had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king's dale; for he said: 'I have no son to keep my name in remembrance'; and he called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom's monument unto this day.
18 Ora, em vida, Absalão havia tomado e erguido para si uma coluna, a qual está no vale do rei; porquanto ele dizia: Não tenho filho para guardar a lembrança do meu nome; e ele chamou a coluna segundo o seu próprio nome; e ela se chama até este dia Lugar de Absalão.
19 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok: 'Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.'
19 Então, disse Aimaás, o filho de Zadoque: Deixa-me, agora, correr, e levar as novas ao rei, como o SENHOR o vingou dos seus inimigos.
20 And Joab said unto him: 'Thou shalt not be the bearer of tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day; but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, forasmuch as the king's son is dead.'
20 E Joabe disse a ele: Tu não levarás novas neste dia, mas levarás as novas noutro dia; mas neste dia não levarás nova alguma, porque o filho do rei está morto.
21 Then said Joab to the Cushite: 'Go tell the king what thou hast seen.' And the Cushite bowed down unto Joab, and ran.
21 Então, disse Joabe a Cusi: Vai e conta ao rei o que viste. E Cusi se curvou diante de Joabe, e correu.
22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab: 'But come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite.' And Joab said: 'Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt have no reward for the tidings?'
22 Então, disse Aimaás, filho de Zadoque, uma vez mais a Joabe: Porém, rogo-te, seja como for, deixa-me também correr após o cuxita. E Joabe disse: Por que correrás tu, filho meu, sabendo que não tens pronta nova alguma?
23 'But come what may, said he, I will run.' And he said unto him: 'Run.' Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and overran the Cushite.
23 Porém, seja como for, disse ele: Deixa-me correr. E ele lhe disse: Corre. Então, Aimaás correu pelo caminho da planície e ultrapassou Cusi.
24 Now David sat between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.
24 E Davi estava sentado entre os dois portões; e o guarda subiu até a parte superior acima do portão, que ia até a parede, e ergueu os seus olhos, e olhou, e eis que um homem corria solitário.
25 And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said: 'If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth.' And he came apace, and drew near.
25 E o guarda gritou, e disse ao rei. E o rei disse: Se ele estiver sozinho, há novas na sua boca. E ele chegou depressa, e se aproximou.
26 And the watchman saw another man running; and the watchman called unto the porter, and said: 'Behold another man running alone.' And the king said: 'He also bringeth tidings.'
26 E o guarda viu outro homem correndo; e o guarda chamou o porteiro, e disse: Eis outro homem correndo sozinho. E o rei disse: Ele também traz novas.
27 And the watchman said: 'I think the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok.' And the king said: 'He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.'
27 E o guarda disse: Parece-me que o correr do primeiro é como o correr de Aimaás, o filho de Zadoque. E o rei disse: Ele é um homem bom, e vem com boas novas.
28 And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king: 'All is well.' And he bowed down before the king with his face to the earth, and said: 'Blessed be the LORD thy God, who hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.'
28 E Aimaás chamou, e disse ao rei: Tudo está bem. E ele caiu em terra sobre a sua face diante do rei, e disse: Bendito seja o SENHOR teu Deus, o qual entregou os homens que levantaram a sua mão contra o meu senhor, o rei.
29 And the king said: 'Is it well with the young man Absalom?' And Ahimaaz answered: 'When Joab sent the king's servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.'
29 E o rei disse: Está seguro o jovem Absalão? E Aimaás respondeu: Quando Joabe enviou o servo do rei, e a mim, o teu servo, vi um grande tumulto, mas não sabia o que era.
30 And the king said: 'Turn aside, and stand here.' And he turned aside, and stood still.
30 E o rei disse a ele: Vira-te para o lado, e põe-te de pé ali. E ele virou-se para o lado, e ficou parado.
31 And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said: 'Tidings for my lord the king; for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.'
31 E, eis que Cusi veio; e disse Cusi: Novas, meu senhor, o rei; pois o SENHOR te vingou neste dia de todos os homens que se levantaram contra ti.
32 And the king said unto the Cushite: 'Is it well with the young man Absalom?' And the Cushite answered: 'The enemies of my lord the king and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.'
32 E o rei disse a Cusi: Está seguro o jovem Absalão? E Cusi respondeu: Os inimigos do meu senhor, o rei, e todos os que se levantam contra ti para te machucar, e sejam como aquele jovem está.
33 And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, thus he said: 'O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!'
33 E o rei ficou mui comovido, e subiu à câmara acima do portão, e chorou; e enquanto subia, assim ele disse: Ó meu filho Absalão! Meu filho, meu filho Absalão! Quisesse Deus, eu teria morrido por ti, ó Absalão, meu filho, meu filho!
