¹ Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim.

¹ Ora, os filisteus reuniram os seus exércitos para a batalha, e estavam reunidos em Socó, que pertence a Judá, e acamparam entre Socó e Azeca, em Efes-Damim.

² And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched in the vale of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.

² E Saul e os homens de Israel estavam reunidos, e acamparam junto ao vale de Elá, e ordenaram a batalha contra os filisteus.

³ And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side; and there was a valley between them.

³ E os filisteus estavam de pé sobre um monte em um lado, e Israel estava de pé em um monte no outro lado; e entre eles havia um vale.

⁴ And there went out a champion from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

⁴ E ali saiu do acampamento dos filisteus um campeão, chamado Golias, de Gate, cuja altura era seis côvados e um palmo.

⁵ And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was clad with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.

⁵ E ele tinha um capacete de bronze sobre a sua cabeça, e estava armado com uma capa encouraçada; e o peso da capa era de cinco mil shekels de bronze.

⁶ And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders.

⁶ E ele tinha caneleiras de bronze sobre as suas pernas, e um dardo de bronze entre os seus ombros.

⁷ And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and his shield- bearer went before him.

⁷ E a haste da sua lança era como um eixo de tecelão; e a ponta da sua lança pesava seiscentos shekels de ferro; e um que portava um escudo ia diante dele.

⁸ And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them: 'Why do ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.

⁸ E ele se pôs de pé e gritou aos exércitos de Israel, e disse-lhes: Por que saístes para ordenar a vossa batalha? Não sou eu um filisteu, e vós servos de Saul? Escolhei um homem para vós, e deixai-o descer até mim.

⁹ If he be able to fight with me, and kill me, then will we be your servants; but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.'

⁹ Se ele for capaz de lutar comigo, e me matar, então seremos vossos servos; mas se eu prevalecer contra ele, e o matar, então vós sereis nossos servos, e nos servireis.

¹⁰ And the Philistine said: 'I do taunt the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.'

¹⁰ E o filisteu disse: Eu desafio os exércitos de Israel neste dia; dai-me um homem para que possamos lutar.

¹¹ And when Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.

¹¹ Quando Saul e todos de Israel ouviram aquelas palavras do filisteu, eles ficaram desalentados, e grandemente temerosos.

¹² Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Beth-lehem in Judah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons; and the man was an old man in the days of Saul, stricken in years among men.

¹² Ora, Davi era o filho daquele efrateu de Belém de Judá, cujo nome era Jessé; e ele tinha oito filhos; e o homem seguia entre os homens como um velho nos dias de Saul.

¹³ And the three eldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the first-born, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

¹³ E os três filhos mais velhos de Jessé foram e seguiram Saul para a batalha; e os nomes dos seus três filhos que foram para a batalha eram Eliabe, o primogênito, e depois dele, Abinadabe, e o terceiro, Samá.

¹⁴ And David was the youngest; and the three eldest followed Saul.--

¹⁴ E Davi era o mais jovem; e os três mais velhos seguiram Saul.

¹⁵ Now David went to and fro from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Beth-lehem.--

¹⁵ Davi, porém, foi e retornou de Saul para alimentar as ovelhas do seu pai em Belém.

¹⁶ And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

¹⁶ E o filisteu se aproximava pela manhã e ao anoitecer, e se apresentou durante quarenta dias.

¹⁷ And Jesse said unto David his son: 'Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to thy brethren.

¹⁷ E Jessé disse a Davi, o seu filho: Toma agora para os teus irmãos um efa deste cereal tostado e estes dez pães, e corre até o campo aos teus irmãos;

¹⁸ And bring these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and to thy brethren shalt thou bring greetings, and take their pledge;

¹⁸ e carrega estes dez queijos até o capitão de mil, e observa como vão os teus irmãos, e toma deles garantia.

¹⁹ now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, are in the vale of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.'

¹⁹ Ora, Saul e eles, e todos os homens de Israel, estavam no vale de Elá, lutando contra os filisteus.

²⁰ And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the barricade, as the host which was going forth to the fight shouted for the battle.

²⁰ E Davi se levantou cedo pela manhã, e deixou as ovelhas com um guardador, e pegou, e foi, como Jessé lhe havia ordenado; e ele veio até a trincheira, quando o exército estava avançando para a luta, e gritava para a batalha.

²¹ And Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.

²¹ Pois Israel e os filisteus haviam ordenado a batalha, exército contra exército.

²² And David left his baggage in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran to the army, and came and greeted his brethren.

²² E Davi deixou a sua carruagem na mão do guardador da carruagem, e correu para o exército, e veio e saudou os seus irmãos.

²³ And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words; and David heard them.

²³ E enquanto ele falava com eles, eis que surgiu ali o campeão, o filisteu de Gate, de nome Golias, dos exércitos dos filisteus, e falou segundo as mesmas palavras; e Davi as ouviu.

²⁴ And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.

²⁴ E quando viram o homem, todos os homens de Israel fugiram dele, e ficaram mui temerosos.

²⁵ And the men of Israel said: 'Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to taunt Israel is he come up; and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.'

²⁵ E os homens de Israel disseram: Vistes este homem que surgiu? Certamente ele subiu para desafiar Israel; e será que, o homem que o matar, o rei o enriquecerá com grandes riquezas, e lhe dará a sua filha, e fará livre a casa do seu pai em Israel.

²⁶ And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying: 'What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the taunt from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should have taunted the armies of the living God?'

²⁶ E Davi falou aos homens que estavam junto a ele, dizendo: O que será feito ao homem que matar este filisteu, e remover a vergonha de Israel? Pois, quem é este filisteu incircunciso, para que grite desafio aos exércitos do Deus vivo?

²⁷ And the people answered him after this manner, saying: 'So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.'

²⁷ E o povo lhe respondeu desta maneira, dizendo: Assim será feito ao homem que o matar.

²⁸ And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said: 'Why art thou come down? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy presumptuousness, and the naughtiness of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.'

²⁸ E Eliabe, seu irmão mais velho, ouviu quando ele falou aos homens; e a ira de Eliabe acendeu-se contra Davi, e ele disse: Por que desceste para cá? E com quem deixaste aquelas poucas ovelhas no deserto? Eu conheço o teu orgulho, e a inconveniência do teu coração; pois desceste para que pudesses ver a batalha.

²⁹ And David said: 'What have I now done? Was it not but a word?'

²⁹ E Davi disse: O que fiz eu agora? Não há uma causa?

³⁰ And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him after the former manner.

³⁰ E ele se virou dele para outro, e falou da mesma forma; e o povo lhe respondeu novamente da forma anterior.

³¹ And when the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he was taken to him.

³¹ E quando as palavras que Davi falou foram ouvidas, eles as relataram diante de Saul; e ele mandou buscá-lo.

³² And David said to Saul: 'Let no man's heart fail within him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.'

³² E Davi disse a Saul: Que não falhe o coração de nenhum homem por causa dele; o teu servo irá e lutará contra este filisteu.

³³ And Saul said to David: 'Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.'

³³ E Saul disse a Davi: Tu não estás apto para ir contra este filisteu e contra ele lutar; pois não passas de um jovem, e ele um homem de guerra desde a sua mocidade.

³⁴ And David said unto Saul: 'Thy servant kept his father's sheep; and when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock,

³⁴ E Davi disse a Saul: O teu servo cuidava das ovelhas do seu pai, quando apareceu um leão, e um urso, e tomou um cordeiro do rebanho;

³⁵ I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth; and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

³⁵ e eu saí atrás dele, e o feri, e o livrei da sua boca; e quando ele se levantou contra mim, eu o peguei pela barba, e o feri, e o matei.

³⁶ Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath taunted the armies of the living God.'

³⁶ O teu servo matou tanto o leão, como o urso; e este filisteu incircunciso será como um deles, pois está desafiando os exércitos do Deus vivo.

³⁷ And David said: 'The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.' And Saul said unto David: 'Go, and the LORD shall be with thee.'

³⁷ Além disso, disse Davi: O SENHOR que me livrou da pata do leão, e da pata do urso, livrar-me-á da mão deste filisteu. E Saul disse a Davi: Vai, e o SENHOR seja contigo.

³⁸ And Saul clad David with his apparel, and he put a helmet of brass upon his head, and he clad him with a coat of mail.

³⁸ E Saul armou Davi com a sua armadura, e colocou um capacete de bronze sobre a sua cabeça; também o armou com uma capa encouraçada.

³⁹ And David girded his sword upon his apparel, and he essayed to go ,but could not ; for he had not tried it. And David said unto Saul: 'I cannot go with these; for I have not tried them.' And David put them off him.

³⁹ E Davi cingiu a sua espada sobre a sua armadura, e experimentou ir; pois ele não a tinha provado. E Davi disse a Saul: Não posso ir com estas coisas; pois não as provei. E Davi as tirou de si.

⁴⁰ And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag which he had, even in his scrip; and his sling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philistine.

⁴⁰ E ele tomou na mão o seu cajado, e escolheu para si cinco pedras lisas do ribeiro, e as colocou em um alforje de pastor que ele tinha, em uma bolsa; e a sua funda estava na sua mão; e ele se aproximou do filisteu.

⁴¹ And the Philistine came nearer and nearer unto David; and the man that bore the shield went before him.

⁴¹ E o filisteu avançou e se aproximou de Davi; e o homem que carregava o escudo ia adiante dele.

⁴² And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and withal of a fair countenance.

⁴² E quando o filisteu olhou e viu Davi, ele o desdenhou; pois ele não passava de um jovem, ruivo e de boa aparência.

⁴³ And the Philistine said unto David: 'Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves?' And the Philistine cursed David by his god.

⁴³ E o filisteu disse a Davi: Sou eu um cão, para que venhas a mim com varas? E o filisteu amaldiçoou Davi em nome dos seus deuses.

⁴⁴ And the Philistine said to David: 'Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.'

⁴⁴ E o filisteu disse a Davi: Vem até mim, e eu darei a tua carne às aves do céu, e aos animais do campo.

⁴⁵ Then said David to the Philistine: 'Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast taunted.

⁴⁵ Então disse Davi ao filisteu: Tu vens a mim com uma espada, e com uma lança, e com um escudo; mas eu vou a ti em nome do SENHOR dos Exércitos, o Deus dos Exércitos de Israel, a quem tu desafiaste.

⁴⁶ This day will the LORD deliver thee into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from off thee; and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel;

⁴⁶ Neste dia o SENHOR te entregará na minha mão; e eu te ferirei, e arrancarei de ti a cabeça; e darei as carcaças dos exércitos dos filisteus neste dia para as aves do céu, e para os animais selvagens da terra, para que toda a terra possa saber que há um Deus em Israel.

⁴⁷ and that all this assembly may know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD'S, and He will give you into our hand.'

⁴⁷ E toda esta assembleia saberá que o SENHOR não salva com espada e lança; pois a batalha é do SENHOR, e ele te entregará nas nossas mãos.

⁴⁸ And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.

⁴⁸ E sucedeu que, quando o filisteu se levantou, e veio e se aproximou para se encontrar com Davi, Davi se apressou e correu em direção ao exército para encontrar o filisteu.

⁴⁹ And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slung it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead; and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the earth.

⁴⁹ E Davi pôs a sua mão na sua bolsa, e dali tomou uma pedra, e a atirou, e feriu o filisteu na sua testa, de modo que a pedra afundou-se na sua testa; e ele caiu com a sua face em terra.

⁵⁰ So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

⁵⁰ Assim, Davi prevaleceu sobre o filisteu com uma funda e com uma pedra, e feriu o filisteu, e o matou; porém não havia espada na mão de Davi.

⁵¹ And David ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw that their mighty man was dead, they fled.

⁵¹ Assim Davi correu e se pôs de pé em cima do filisteu, e tomou a sua espada, sacou-a da sua bainha e o matou, e com ela ele cortou sua cabeça. E quando os filisteus viram que o seu campeão estava morto, eles fugiram.

⁵² And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou comest to Gai, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.

⁵² E os homens de Israel e de Judá levantaram, e gritaram, e perseguiram os filisteus, até chegar ao vale, e aos portões de Ecrom. E os feridos dos filisteus caíram pelo caminho de Saaraim, até Gate e até Ecrom.

⁵³ And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their camp.

⁵³ E os filhos de Israel retornaram da perseguição aos filisteus, e espoliaram as suas tendas.

⁵⁴ And David took the head of the philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

⁵⁴ E Davi tomou a cabeça do filisteu, e a trouxe a Jerusalém; mas colocou a sua armadura na sua tenda.

⁵⁵ And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host: 'Abner, whose son is this youth?' And Abner said: 'As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.'

⁵⁵ E quando Saul viu Davi avançar contra o filisteu, ele disse a Abner, o capitão do exército: Abner, este jovem é filho de quem? E Abner disse: Como vive a tua alma, ó rei, não sei dizer.

⁵⁶ And the king said: 'Inquire thou whose son the stripling is.'

⁵⁶ E o rei disse: Investiga quem é o pai desse rapaz.

⁵⁷ And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

⁵⁷ E quando Davi retornava do massacre do filisteu, Abner o tomou, e o trouxe diante de Saul, com a cabeça do filisteu na sua mão.

⁵⁸ And Saul said to him: 'Whose son art thou, thou young man?' And David answered: 'I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.'

⁵⁸ E Saul lhe disse: De quem tu és filho, jovem homem? E Davi respondeu: Sou filho do teu servo Jessé, o belemita.
