1 The worde of the Lord came also vnto Ionah the sonne of Amittai, saying,
1 Veio a palavra do Senhor a Jonas, filho de Amitai, dizendo:
2 Arise, and goe to Nineueh, that great citie, and crye against it: for their wickednesse is come vp before mee.
2 Dispõe-te, vai à grande cidade de Nínive e clama contra ela, porque a sua malícia subiu até mim.
3 But Ionah rose vp to flee into Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went downe to Iapho: and he founde a ship going to Tarshish: so he payed the fare thereof, and went downe into it, that he might go with them vnto Tarshish, from the presence of the Lord.
3 Jonas se dispôs, mas para fugir da presença do Senhor , para Társis; e, tendo descido a Jope, achou um navio que ia para Társis; pagou, pois, a sua passagem e embarcou nele, para ir com eles para Társis, para longe da presença do Senhor .
4 But the Lord sent out a great winde into the sea, and there was a mightie tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
4 Mas o Senhor lançou sobre o mar um forte vento, e fez-se no mar uma grande tempestade, e o navio estava a ponto de se despedaçar.
5 Then the mariners were afraide, and cryed euery man vnto his God, and cast the wares that were in the ship, into the sea to lighten it of the: but Ionah was gone downe into the sides of the ship, and he lay downe, and was fast a sleepe.
5 Então, os marinheiros, cheios de medo, clamavam cada um ao seu deus e lançavam ao mar a carga que estava no navio, para o aliviarem do peso dela. Jonas, porém, havia descido ao porão e se deitado; e dormia profundamente.
6 So the shipmaster came to him, and saide vnto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call vpon thy God, if so be that God wil thinke vpon vs, that we perish not.
6 Chegou-se a ele o mestre do navio e lhe disse: Que se passa contigo? Agarrado no sono? Levanta-te, invoca o teu deus; talvez, assim, esse deus se lembre de nós, para que não pereçamos.
7 And they saide euery one to his fellowe, Come, and let vs cast lottes, that we may know, for whose cause this euill is vpon vs. So they cast lottes, and the lot fell vpon Ionah.
7 E diziam uns aos outros: Vinde, e lancemos sortes, para que saibamos por causa de quem nos sobreveio este mal. E lançaram sortes, e a sorte caiu sobre Jonas.
8 Then said they vnto him, Tell vs for whose cause this euill is vpon vs? what is thine occupation? and whence commest thou? which is thy countrey? and of what people art thou?
8 Então, lhe disseram: Declara-nos, agora, por causa de quem nos sobreveio este mal. Que ocupação é a tua? Donde vens? Qual a tua terra? E de que povo és tu?
9 And he answered them, I am an Ebrewe, and I feare the Lord God of heauen, which hath made the sea, and the dry lande.
9 Ele lhes respondeu: Sou hebreu e temo ao Senhor , o Deus do céu, que fez o mar e a terra.
10 Then were the men exceedingly afrayde, and said vnto him, Why hast thou done this? (for the men knewe, that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had tolde them)
10 Então, os homens ficaram possuídos de grande temor e lhe disseram: Que é isto que fizeste! Pois sabiam os homens que ele fugia da presença do Senhor , porque lho havia declarado.
11 Then saide they vnto him, What shall we doe vnto thee, that the sea may be calme vnto vs? (for the sea wrought and was troublous)
11 Disseram-lhe: Que te faremos, para que o mar se nos acalme? Porque o mar se ia tornando cada vez mais tempestuoso.
12 And he said vnto them, Take me, and cast me into the sea: so shall the sea be calme vnto you: for I knowe that for my sake this great tempest is vpon you.
12 Respondeu-lhes: Tomai-me e lançai-me ao mar, e o mar se aquietará, porque eu sei que, por minha causa, vos sobreveio esta grande tempestade.
13 Neuerthelesse, the men rowed to bring it to the lande, but they coulde not: for the sea wrought, and was troublous against them.
13 Entretanto, os homens remavam, esforçando-se por alcançar a terra, mas não podiam, porquanto o mar se ia tornando cada vez mais tempestuoso contra eles.
14 Wherefore they cryed vnto the Lord, and said, We beseech thee, O Lord, we beseech thee, let vs not perish for this mans life, and lay not vpon vs innocent blood: for thou, O Lord, hast done, as it pleased thee.
14 Então, clamaram ao Senhor e disseram: Ah! Senhor ! Rogamos-te que não pereçamos por causa da vida deste homem, e não faças cair sobre nós este sangue, quanto a nós, inocente; porque tu, Senhor , fizeste como te aprouve.
15 So they tooke vp Ionah, and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceased from her raging.
15 E levantaram a Jonas e o lançaram ao mar; e cessou o mar da sua fúria.
16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice vnto the Lord, and made vowes.
16 Temeram, pois, estes homens em extremo ao Senhor ; e ofereceram sacrifícios ao Senhor e fizeram votos.
17 Nowe the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallowe vp Ionah: and Ionah was in the belly of the fish three dayes, and three nightes.
17 Deparou o Senhor um grande peixe, para que tragasse a Jonas; e esteve Jonas três dias e três noites no ventre do peixe.
